Default Today at work

We have this temp girl filling in for one of our receptionists and she incidentally has curly hair. She straightened it today and was ranting and raving about how much curly hair sucked, right next to me. Someone else in the room pointed it out that I had curly hair too, and she turns to me and says "Doesn't it stink"? All I said is that I never straighten it anymore and quit trying to fit it into submission. I wanted to say that I love my hair now, but I didn't want to make it seem to her or anyone else that I was trying to make her look bad or feel superior. She really hadn't insulted me, it just made me feel sorry for her that she's mid 30's and still is in hair denial. What do you do when a fellow curly-haired person starts bashing curls?

I've been known to say how much curly hair sucks and is ugly but that's when I'm frustrated with it and don't know what to do. I'm not going to lie and say I don't like my hair straight because I do. I like my hair curly, straight, short, long, and on top of my head!! But I'm tired of damaging my hair and I'm learning to appreciate its natural state.

I went to school with people who could care less what other peoples hair looked
like, everyone was more into your personality and what you were wearing, but my family definitely pays attention to what I do to my hair. Curly or straight they always have to say something about it, and I'm getting sick of it.

but yeah its weird that someone would talk trash about curly hair when someone else is in the room and wearing their hair curly, just seems kind of rude

I've had people say bad things like this about being a redhead to me. I get it more for that than for curliness. Usually I just seethe, but I think the "Speak for yourself," line is better.

(A famous writer once read aloud a bad thing he wrote about redheads while I was in the room. All eyes swung to me. I raised my eyebrows but showed no other reaction. What would others have done?)

Sorry if this was a semi-hijack.

Ninja Dog, I am a redhead, too. What did the guy write? (sorry to continue the semi-hijack.)

I sometimes get weird stares from strangers. They have very negative expressions on their faces. Years ago, when I mentioned that to DH, he thought I was imagining it. But then he started noticing it!

Some people think:

- Redheads are witches (this belief is prevalent in some other countries/cultures).
- Redheads have bad tempers.
- Redheads are wild in bed.

Sorry to guano, and if this sounds ignorant, but it's a serious question: what culture thinks that redheads are witches?

alacurl, it was Michael Chabon, and he wrote that we (redheads) aren't attractive, or consistently attractive. I've pretty much hated him since.

Hair color, eye color, skin color - there's a stereotype for everything. Like the redhead=bad temper thing, there's the black eyes=evil, blue eyes=innocent, blondes=stupid, etc.
Where do people come up with this stuff?

I probably would have voiced what I was thinking. Something along the lines of, "Actually, I really like my hair curly. You just have to learn what works for it."

How dumb. Because all other hair colors are? He probably had a crush on some redhead that wouldn't give him the time of day.

Default I've got one

Today at work I was having a conversation with two co-workers and they started talking about a woman they thought was way overdone, saying it must take her three hours to do her make up, etc. I said I had my hair routine down to 10 minutes (a slight exaggeration) since I had been going exclusively curly for the last two weeks. The male co-worker then said: That reminds me of a huge fat guy I knew that used to say he could eat anything he wants and never gain weight. $#@&^%

I had something a bit like this once where I was walking into town and these two identikit girls (generic hair, make-up and clothes) walk past me in the opposite direction and one says to the other whilst looking at me 'Straighten the hair!' and they both giggle like hyenas. I span around grabbed them both by the wrist and gushed 'Really, do you think so? Please give me more of your wonderful advice so I can look just like you!' they ran off screaming, serves them right!

OMG! You deserve a reward for that! I absolutely LOVE you for doing this! You've got some ovaries, lol!

Yesterday, my neighbor brought her daughter's baby to our house and started talking about how "bad" his hair was. I walked over to the baby and started feeling his hair. I told her, "It's just a little dry that's all. Just keep it moisturized, it'll be alright." She then started to go on about how her family has a history of having "bad hair". Then she looked at me and said, "What kind of look are you going for? Are you just wearing your hair loose?" I said, "I'm keeping it natural. I've been natural for three years now." She then said," You have a lot of hair.... I bet you can't do a thing with it." (This comes from a woman who has about two inches of permed crap on her head and she wears a wig) I looked her straight in the eye and I said, "If a person has long hair like mine, they can do whatever they want to do.... unlike those who have short hair and have to wear wigs." I kinda grinned when I said that and she shut up real quick. I picked up the baby and put some conditioner on his hair and then put twists in his hair. His hair looked so cute.

Ha! That is awesome. You rock!

Redhead curlies... I'm sorry people have been so hostile toward you! I've got red hair and the worst anyone has ever said about it is that it's ORANGE. Which, no.

Natural redheads are rare, so I bet naturally curly natural redheads are even more so, and that makes us pretty f--king cool in my book.

glad you guys liked my actions. I worry that i'm too reactionary. I love my curly hair, if only people would stop asking me if it was a perm.
