Julia provided us all with a great report on how Disney is ignoring curlygirls, by providing princesses with sleek, straight hair. Julia was particularly annoyed by Mia, from the princess diaries, who had her beautiful curls straightened, so she could look more acceptable.

I read this collum violently nodding my head with agreement. Then, two days later, the Princess Diaries was on the television. I watched the start with great annoyance, as they destroyed Mia's lovely hair. But what annoyed me most came at the end.

Mia was sat in her car - an open top - in the pooring rain, getting increasingly wet. She was out in the rain for at least 20 minutes. Eventually she was driven to the Royal ball, where she was hurried onto the stage. In the process, assistants were rubbing her hair with a towel, desparately trying to dry it. Mia then gave a ten minute long speech - her hair gradually drying.

I am sure most of you would agree with me when I say that, if my curly hair was ever soak by the rain, then viciously towel dried, it would immediately begin to frizz, or at the very least curl. Mia's stayed perfectly straight!

Come on Disney!!! Do you research!

The problem with that is they can't take pauses to recurl Anne Hathaway's STRAIGHT hair. They were going for DRAMATIC transformation. Her mother had wonderfully curly hair in that movie if I remember right.

It is based on a book. While I have not read it, the straightening could be what the author wrote.

As for the animated ones while they may not have curly hair (which is hard to continue for the animators, esp. when it was still all done by hand) they have lush, full of body hair. Aurora is arguably a wavy, and Wendy has lovely curls, that stay curly even after flying through clouds (damp!) and falling in the mermaid lagoon. Disney has never been one of accuracy. It's more of the broader message. What does happen to Mia is that she learns that it's not what outside that counts but what is inside a person and being happy with who you are.

Mia's was probably thermally straightened, as they would not straighten her hair everyday with a flat iron.

And, in my opinion, all of the princesses have a least a little bit of wave in their hair:

I agree that most of the Disney princesses have thick hair, most of them have waves (i.e. Belle).

I think that Disney does a fairly decent job of making characters that most little girls can see themselves in. However, I've always wondered why Jasmine went from being brown to light tan in the newest ads and dolls.

That is so funny. I was just thinking that same thing the other day. I saw a beautiful painting of a mermaid, and thought, "you never see a mermaid with straight hair, they all have beautiful curls and waves...except Ariel with those AWFUL feathered bangs, but then, none of the Disney princess have curls. What is up with that?"

Maybe the artists want to draw straight/wavy hair cause it's easier.

But I agree there should be more curly princesses. Gisele (sp?) from Enchanted seemed to have naturally wavy hair but had beautiful curls in a couple scenes of the movie.

I think Lady from lady and the tramp had curly hair but yeah none of them have spirals or anything, none of the princes do either from what i can remember

The thing with the hard drawing of curls, i have to disagree. i find them easier to draw (they hide mistakes if the head-shape looks weird). but maybe with animation it's a different story

Didn't Belle have curly hair? My mom always says my hair looks kind of like hers (my hair is more curly, though).

I'll be honest. The first time I watched The Princess Diaries, I didn't really think about the hair change! And Mia wasn't happy with it at first, because she had the hat and everything, right? And then in the second one, they curled her hair sometimes (but then, of course, they decided they hated the style....) Anne Hathaway has naturally straight hair. I don't get why they had to curl it (or give her a wig) in the first place, though. But that's why they kept it straight, and it didn't curl in the rain. It did kind of set a bad example for new and young curlies.

Aurora/Briar Rose/Sleeping Beauty (I still have trouble with her actual identity a little. Haven't seen the movie in years) had kind of wavy 2a hair.

As for the drawing, yes it is easier to do straight hair, at least when you need to see from a sides and back and whatnot. Curly hair is, at times, if not always, more complex than straight hair. It's the same with drawing it. Now, if you're just sketching, it doesn't really matter. I draw both types of hair.

I do wish more shows had curly girls, though.
