And you know, I think this is a big part of some of the comments - I think curly vs. straight has a lot to do with what the trends are at the time. I'm 45, and when I was in college in the 80s, curly hair was very popular. I had people tell me all the time how they were jealous of my curls, and how they wanted a perm so they could have curls, too.
But now it seems that straight hair is more "in", and I'll tell you, there are times I've had people practically running at me with a flat iron. Since I've finally embraced my curls and learned to love them ( because I fought them for a few years there, yup), I notice a lot more people asking me why I don't try to straighten them. Give it time - when curls rule again, we'll have the last laugh!
