My niece has a few times asked me why I don't straighten my hair. She's young and goes by what the fashion industry tells her. Her hair is naturally wavy/curly but she just HAS to straighten it.
I told her I love my hair curly.

Yesteday my friend was playing with my hair and said how nice it was, then asked me if I had ever straightened it. I replied that used to straighten it all the time. She then asked me if i wuld straighten it for the christmas hall formal next week I told her I might straighten it one day when I wasn't doing anything and as few as possible people would see it but definitely NOT for the formal!!

I feel like it's a hit or miss with curly hair. No one really compliments or comments on straight hair.

I've definitely got that before. And when I cave and straighten it, I get a million comments about how I should straighten it more often because it's adorable. (I personally feel like I look like a lion with it straightened. Sure, lions are cute, but it doesn't exactly work on me.) It always feels like everyone wants to change my identity so I'm "prettier". I hate it.

And you know, I think this is a big part of some of the comments - I think curly vs. straight has a lot to do with what the trends are at the time. I'm 45, and when I was in college in the 80s, curly hair was very popular. I had people tell me all the time how they were jealous of my curls, and how they wanted a perm so they could have curls, too.

But now it seems that straight hair is more "in", and I'll tell you, there are times I've had people practically running at me with a flat iron. Since I've finally embraced my curls and learned to love them (because I fought them for a few years there, yup), I notice a lot more people asking me why I don't try to straighten them. Give it time - when curls rule again, we'll have the last laugh!

It kinda annoys me when people say they like curly hair then offer to straighten it. It's happened to me a few times actually, I mean I don't mind if a friend offers to straighten it, but when it's from people I don't really know..or people from school/college wherever, that's when it starts to annoy me.

I understand too like all of the other curlies here. One day I came to work with my hair straightened which I have not done in a very long time (I got it cut/dyed and my stylist literally makes my hair look like it was brushed out and teased when she tries to curl it) so I had my stylist straighten it so I wouldn't cry this time around! LOL Anyways I go to work and the next day I come with my hair curly. This girl says to me "oh you curled your hair again, I like your hair straight, do you not know how to straighten it?" I replied "yes I do, but I LOVE my curls!". The nerve of some people!

Smile Same here!!!

Hey girls. I have the same problem! I am the only girl on our 85 member dance team with naturally CURLY hair and the other girls just don't get it. They always say those comments and I can never tell if they're really interested or just rude (prob the latter!). But all you can do is ignore them or use my classic response "next time I have two to three spare hours I'll give it a try" :P of course it really only takes 1-2 hrs to straighten my hair but the exaggeration adds to the effect

I guess they're just curious.
My friend is always asking me to straighten my hair, and wonders why I always leave it curly. I understand it's interesting to see other people with different hair, but just a couple months before that I had pin straight hair because I constantly straightened it. Next time she makes that compliment I'll say something like "Why do you always leave your hair straight? You should try to it curl once in a while". And she also says to me how she's grateful to have straight hair, and not curly.
As you can see, not exactly a very nice friend. :x And that's not even the start of it.
