Stop Touching My Hair!!!!!

Like Tree16Likes

My husband loves raking his fingers through my hair. I know it's a sign of affection but it drives me crazy. He's recently adjusted to the idea of just brushing a curl back softly with his finger instead of sticking his whole hand in. Better but not perfect. It is, of course, better than when he used to try to get a fine-toothed comb into my hair. His hair is straight and needs to be combed fairly often or it tangles so he carries a small comb everywhere. When he wants to torture me he pulls out that comb and advances towards me slowly.

when i was little, ppl would always come up to me and touch my hair... in the grocery store, at church, EVERYWHERE! (b/c it was pretty much a tight, curly little afro like this -> ) i would raise my arms up and try to cover my head as best as i could when i'd see someone coming. it DEFINITELY gave me a complex about ppl touching my hair!

but i also think its weird when strangers touch pregnant girls bellies. one of my biggest fears of having a kid is having strange people touch my stomach and then after the kid is born strange people touching my babys hair... ugh lmao

You know when you are letting dry to SOTC??? K, so....I am behaving myself and keeping my hands OFF. Sitting here minding my own business at NC.com. What do I feel???? DH grabbing my hair and swinging it and playing with it?!!! grrrr. I will have to review the rules with him again.

Normal porosity, zero elasticity, thick (according to my stylists) but not overly thick hair, currently when air-dried non-CG drys as stringy mess of friz.

I need a brush intervention.

I have been natural now for 8 years and in that time I have perfected the art of "Reflex Hand-Smacking". I DO NOT like when people I don't know invade my private space, and it is now complete reflex for me to smack your hand if it gets within 2 inches of my hair. I'm actually glad I have this technic down pat because I do not plan on having strangers grope my stomach when I'm pregnant and anyone who tries to pet my baby's hair will draw back a stub!

Remind me to stay at least 10 feet away from you (100 if there are throwable objects nearby, i.e javelins or bowling balls), Coils! Haha.

I don't run up to random people and get a fistful of hair, but. At school I like to play with the hair of the person sitting in front of me. Especially if it's long and curly. Nothing too touchy, just tugging on ringlets or twirling a few straight/wavy strands around my finger. But only if they're nice/I know them somehow!

I've never had my hair touched by a stranger, thankfully. But my family is like 99.99999999% female and the older women are.. southern, let's say.

So I've gotten used to them shoving their mitts in my roots and saying things like "she has a lot of hair." and "oooo good lord her hair is thick." And some not so nice things.

No, wait. In middle school this one girl touched my hair in the cafeteria while I was in line. My hair was straight but medium length, and she asked if it was my real hair, and if I was mixed when I said yes.

Right, because only mixed people have non-short hair. Silly me!

I'm delurking to say I've enjoyed reading this thread. I'm shiny new to this whole curly thing and I can imagine how annoying it must be to have strangers touching you. I'd suggest the spray bottle, used liberally while shouting "NO! BAD!"

I'm not CG - tried it and failed for two years. My scalp hates it.

Since going CG (only 4 days in and the curl has automaticcally responded!), my BFF INSISTS on not only touching it, but she scrunches it a few hundred times, then rakes and pulls the hair out to the side. When she did it once I didnt say anything. The second time she mdid it I kinf of turned my head away. The third grab (apparantly she didnt get the hint) caused me to say "Can you please stop?! You are pulling out the curl by doing that!". She was pretty insulted lol.

As a hairdresser I have to touch but I always ask unless they are in my chair.
Omg, That stuff is constant for me!
People are always tugging my curls, Esp. if they sit behind me in class.
I just let them do their thing usually.
But everyone seems to have the same problem, No matter who they are or how many times they have played with my hair:
They rake their fingers lovingly through my ringlets a few times, Then tug for all they're worth! And then they don't understand why I jump until I'm like "That hurts, This ain't weave dude."
I get, "Omg, Really?"
Rest assured that they will do this the next time they play with my curls, and the next, and the NEXT.
Haha.

I usually get my respect for personal space, with only one exception - my uncle. He is my main culprit for touching my hair because he says he wants to "relax" it and "let it flow"; what the heck?!?! One time (before I was even CG!) I was wearing a curly ponytail, and he just randomly started to play with it, then when I walked out of the TV room, everyone was giving me looks of pity, so I went to the mirror to see what was wrong, to find that my hair looked like I dry-combed it! I usually don't say anything because of course, he's my uncle, and I respect him.

Next time, though, I WILL say something!

"Smile...just do it."

People touch my hair all the time, but I actually don't mind it. Never have I had random strangers touch my hair though, maybe just some girl at the bar when she said my hair was pretty. People are just attracted to curls I don't think they can help it lol

lol, i think its another form of complimenting your hair. if you have people just become attracted to you because of your curls and have a desire to touch them it's because they are fascinated at how good it looks. yes, it is rude to have strangers just touch your hair. i always tense up because i always get the ones that walk up behind me and tug at my hair, which burns me up. if you wanna touch then touch nicely. dont pull.
but it always sucks when people pet it...

[QUOTE=Cupid;996906]When i had really big kinky hair and fro's i used to have many situations like that .

Same here. I'm African American & wore a MASSIVE Jackson Five type afro in the late 60's til 1981 when I started curly perms. Anyhow I had to get used to Caucasians wanting to touch my hair. I didn't mind. I'm a teacher & regarded those times as "teachable moments". Afros were a new style & they were unfamiliar with that hair type. They wanted to touch it ;were surprised that it was so soft & asked questions about how I took care of it,did I set it,etc. You have to remember that TOUCH is one of our most important senses;one by which we learn about our world. Babies & baby animals that aren't touched & cuddled don't thrive & have behavior problems. The urge to touch can be overwhelming & at times irrational. You see a stone sculpture at a museum. Now everyone on the planet knows what stone feels like. But you still have an irrational urge to reach out & touch that sculpture anyway. That's why you see PLEASE DON'T TOUCH in museums, why really precious items are enclosed in glass cases. Oh yes... PLEASE DON'T TOUCH THE GLASS. In Philadelphia there's a "Please Touch Museum". I decided In Feb not to perm my hair anymore & go natural. So I'll probably be dealing with this issue again in the near future.

yeah this has happened to me before. I had 2 people (1 being my cousin) to yank my ponytail because he didn't believe it was my hair. & another person (who I barely knew) ran his fingers through my hair for the same reason stated above. it's rude & annoying.

Strangely enough its one of my curly friends who touches my hair the most often. If I'm out somewhere and I feel a hand at the back of my hair I know it will be her. Its really annoying!

Also I hate it when guys stroke it. I was once kissing a guy and he was literally raking through my hair with his fingers. Firstly, I'm not a kitten -don't stroke me! And second, it makes my hair HUGE! seriously it was worse than dry combing
