iCarly

I know I am a loser for watching this but an episode really pissed me off.

For those that don't know it it stars two young girls, Carly (Miranda Cosgrove) and Sam (Jeanette McCurdy). Carly is very girly and Sam more of a tom boy.

Anywho, in one episode Sam wants Carly to make her "girlier" and she does. What pissed me off is to make her girly they straighten her very pretty wavy hair. I know they probably did it for affect since it's so different but why can't one be girly with curly hair?

Oh for heaven's sake. I like that little girl's hair, too (I have kids, hence, I know iCarly...lol). It's lovely. Why is it whenever there's a makeover on ANY show, it seems, they bust out the flat iron? Bugs the ever loving crap out of me.

Haha, I'm 18 but still watch Nickelodeon. :p

But I agree. I think her hair is really pretty wavy and "girly". It looks like she is naturally curly. I'm sure they touch it up but it's lovely.

Haha, good to know I am not alone.

I don't know either. They probably just wanted a "dramatic effect". It's just annoying because young girls watch it and they can think they need straight hair to be pretty and get a boyfriend like Sam did.. :angry3:

I'm 36 and I watch Spongebob. My kids ignore Spongebob. I love Spongebob. He's a great brain break. :goofy:

Anyhoo...sad that they straightened her pretty hair. That Carly girl (Miranda) has some awesome shiny hair, though, doesn't she? So does Leela on Sesame Street.

Okay, I need to just shut up now. LOL.

I love Spongebob. Patrick Star! Haha.

But yes Miranda does have nice hair. I don't like how it seems the shows making her grow up so fast. But it happens a lot. I remember seeing her on Drake and Josh.

Nice to see I'm not the only one who enjoys a little Patrick Star now and again! :)

I liked Sam's hair before they decided to straighten it. She looked prettier with it curly. I don't know why show producers feel that straight hair equals sexy hair.

Patrick rules. 8) Seriously, check out this chick on Sesame Street's hair. This picture hardly does it justice. It's the shiniest, glossiest hair I've ever seen:

"oh tarter sauce." my kids say that all the time. i like spongebob, and i carly. i love sam's curly hair. i thought i was the only sad, boring parent that watches these shows with my kids. this thread has made me feel better now.

Don't feel bad, I love iCarly too! (My husband even watches it with me! :) And I watched a lot of Spongebob this past weekend during the Spongebob Spongebash!

I really like Sams long curls. I wish my hair could look that good one day :)

Me too, I loved it! Haha, the new episode where they turn to babies is great and so cute.

And yes, I love Sam's long curls.

First off, you're not a loser for watching "iCarly." I watch it and I love it. My little sister actually got me into it. Did I mention that I'm nineteen? Haha. :)

Anyway, that episode sort of set me off too. I noticed that they had straightened her hair, and while it did look good, her curly hair is beautiful! It struck a nerve with me that they only perpetuated that stereotype that girls look sexier and prettier with straight hair.

PeacexPassion 07-27-2009 11:41 PM

I'm not much of an icarly fan, but i was watching that ep. with one of my friends and i hated how Sam's hair was immediately straightened....I'm 15 and i hate how straight hair is what is automatically needed to look "Pretty" and curly hair is labeled 'messy' or 'frizzy' or just plain ugly. It's degrading what they do on those makeover shows... :disgust:

rinloveescurls:D 07-29-2009 06:05 AM

ughh, that episode reallyyy bothered me.
what, girls with curly hair can't be 'girly' or 'pretty'?
i LOVE her hair the way it is, they never shouldve straightened it.
now little girls with curly hair are going to think to be pretty they need straight hair.

the part that just put me over the edge was when my brother, who was watching it with me, said, "wow, she looks SOO much better." his girlfriend has naturally curly hair, but straightens it every day. grrrr.

I agree. Her straight hair was pretty but IMO it was a bit boring and it just wasn't "Sam" or Jeanette for that matter.

I watch this show too with my daughter. I actually think it is a great show. Every once in a while I notice something I'm not fond of and talk to my daughter about it.

I didn't see this one but I know my daughter did for sure as she never misses an episode. It is really hard when you are trying to raise a child to be "herself" including loving her curly hair and this stuff keeps appearing.

The only saving grace for me is that even a $150 flat iron didn't do much for my daughters hair. It is just too thick to straighten well. The only way she could do it would be chemical and neither I nor her are willing at this point!

The sad thing is that she goes to a middle school where you don't see very many female curly girls---partly due to demographics (70% Asian) *but* the other girls who are curly either straighten or keep their hair back in a ponytail or bun. What I've been trying to impress upon her is that she is unique--and plus it'll be pretty cool to be one of the only curlies in school---since she is in a class of highly gifted kids it's only outside of her class that issues like this come up...inside the class the kids are a complete mix so they are very accepting:)

I don't watch Spongebob but I do still love any form of Scooby Doo:)

There was also another iCarly episode where Miranda and Sam were never friends it was a what if episode and her hair was straightened. It's sad but I watch that show for her hair it's divine. I perfer it curly of course though.

I LOVE Spongebob. Wish there was a living, breathing man with all his qualities. patrick Star reminds me a lot of Homer Simpson (they have similar qualities)

The episode you speak of was on just last night 8/4/09. I noticed they gave her flat hair too.
