Copper Toxicity...IUD and Hair loss
Hello there Curlie Girls. J I have been lurking on this forum for about 11 months now. A friend of mine told me about this site after I have been having problems with my NC hair, which has been VERY upsetting to me. Because my hair has always been my “crown of glory” and I always get compliments on my hair. Sorry this extremely long, but my post may be very helpful to some of you regarding BC/Contraception etc.
I am a 3A mostly, fine/medium texture, high porosity, low elasticity. I use to have some 3B in there, but a health issue has changed all of that.
I have always embraced my curls and very rarely straightened. I’ve always used Aveda Styling Products in my hair which has been my HG. I used Elixr, Confixor and Brilliant Humectants in my hair. I did use Pantene shampoo and conditioner for curly hair and washed it every day. I had beautiful curls! Up until 3 years ago.
About 3 years ago I started noticing that my hair began changing texture and losing some of its curl. I also was losing a lot of hair! At that point I thought it might be do to some stressful things that had been going on in my life and the permanent dye I had been using in my hair for over 10 years. I also have thyroid issues, but it has always remained in check.
In September 2007 I decided to stop using the NUVARING because I was having horrible side effects after using it for 3 years. I decided at that time I was done using synthetic hormones and poisoning my body. After doing a ton of research and speaking to my sister who is a Physicians Assistant I decided to have the Paraguard Copper IUD inserted (she had one inserted as well). Well the first year seem to go well, loved that I didn’t have to worry about getting pregnant and wasn’t poisoning my body with synthetic hormones. The only negatives at the time were that my periods were lasting 2 weeks with horrible cramps and I had this dull ache in my lower abdomen. I thought the trade-offs at the time were far better then the negatives. Well fast forward to April 2010. I had been feeling quite ill for several months and not understanding why. I gained some weight (looked like I was 4 mo prego), I would try everything to lose and the weight wouldn’t budge. I dance and very active so, it was frustrating that I couldn’t shift my weight. I called my sister to ask her if she was having any problems and she told me to get it removed. She had had hers removed after feeling tired, bloated, 2 week long periods and the dreaded spare tire that wouldn’t go away. I decided to Google Paraguard and weight gain and found this life saving website (http://www.topix.com/forum/health/birth-control/TPJ6JN7FDCJOTQN53/p6 and http://www.topix.com/forum/health/birth-control/TPJ6JN7FDCJOTQN53/p21 ) and http://drlwilson.com/Articles/copper_toxicity_syndrome.htm
These woman were having the same problems as I. As I began to read my jaw just dropped. Several health problems I was dealing with these same women were having and I then realized my Paraguard was causing these health problems. My symptoms were/are:
1. Extreme Hair Loss (I have lost about 50% of my hair, which has affected the curl pattern in my hair)
2. Extreme Fatigued (I would have to take a 2 hour nap before dance rehearsals-not normal for me)
3. Migraine Headaches- which I would get 3x’s a week (never had a problem before Paraguard)
4. Stiff and Achy Joints – It would hurt to stand up and get out of bed in the morning
5. Constant Vaginal Infections
6. Horrible smelling discharge
7. Blurry vision
8. Periods lasting half the month
9. Water Retention (my weight would literally fluctuate 10 lbs. + or – a day.
10. Depression
11. Horrible PMS (not normal for me)/ Extreme Moodiness
12. Anxiety
11. Chronic Lower abdominal and Lower back pain
12. Unexplained rash on my arms
13. Unusually sore breasts
14. Insomnia
15. Brain Fog/Spacieness
After reading over a hundred posts I felt validated as to why I was feeling the way I did. It seems that one of two things could be happening to the body with women who are having similar problems with the Paraguard. The body is having an Inflammatory Response to having a foreign object in the body. The doctors will argue that there isn’t any hormones in the Paraguard to cause these symptoms, but what they fail to realize is that this inflammatory response is throwing off all your other natural hormones in your body which are causing these symptoms, especially cortisol. The second thing it could be is Copper Poisoning (Copper Toxicity or Copper Overload) from the Copper IUD. Too much copper mimics Estrogen in the body making you Estrogen Dominant, which would explain the hair loss, weight gain (spare tire) and the other symptoms I was experiencing. Too much estrogen in the body can cause systemic Candida not to mention increase your risk of cancer which was of great concern to me. I could never get rid of that spare tire around my belly even after changing my eating habits. I made an appointment to have it taken out. The day after, I had no achiness, lower abdominal pain gone, no migraine, I was in the bathroom every hour (body was letting go of all that water). What I found was that I indeed had copper poisoning. I began taking Zinc, Vitamin C and B complex and Vitamin D which is suppose to help chelate the copper from your body. Changed my diet no Chocolate, Nuts, Coffee and some Veg. All have copper in them. The copper depleted my vitamin D and I was and still am Vitamin D deficient(Normal is 30-100 and I was at 15) which in turn can cause hair loss! Also the copper can affect your thyroid and while my TSH was normal it wasn’t MY normal.
It can take 6 months to a year for the excess copper to be released from the body (depending how long you’ve had the IUD). I am still battling with several issues. While my body shape is coming back to normal, I am fighting with the weight loss because I am still estrogen dominant and have systemic Candida (which can also lead to hair loss). It’s been quite a long journey, but I know I will get there! Having that evil thing taken out of my body was the first step. While there maybe women who are fine on the IUD, I would never recommend it to anyone! The women who are fine may not have sensitivity to copper or the inflammatory response, or they just may not have had the IUD long enough to know to recognize the symptoms. I believe in Integrative Medicine (Holistic and Allopathic) and that’s the approach I take with my healthcare. You have to be your own Health Care Advocate and listen to your body. Doctor’s don’t know everything! I don’t think it’s normal to be poisoning our bodies with synthetic hormones and/or foreign objects. Our bodies weren’t meant to be altered in that way. The things we women do in order not to become pregnant!
Wow if you stayed with me this long I am IMPRESSED! I just wanted to share my story and maybe it will change the life of one person reading this who’s dealing with hair loss and can’t figure out why. Thanks for listening J.

Wow! What a response! :)
Thank you for responding to my other post, and also for posting this additional info here. I had forgotten about my original message.
I have been dealing with alot of things that you mentioned.
Hair loss
Dry, brittle hair
Change in curl pattern (maybe due to less volume)
itchy scalp and skin
weight gain (20lbs) *glad I'm tall*
sore, heavy breasts
endless periods
constant yeast and vaginal infections
bleeding after sex
I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of anything off hand right now.
I am so disappointed because I wanted so badly to get away from hormonal birth control. Hormonal BC kills my sex drive. At least all the ones I've tried.
It takes six months for excess copper to leave the system? I have actually been taking alot of vitamins and supplements for around the last 4 months or so because of fatigue, some of which you mentioned. I wonder if that's helping to fight the effects of the Paragard? I had a theory that the Paragard somehow messed with the hormones, but I couldn't find anyone to validate it until now. Inflammation makes sense!
Are you using any b.c. currently, or are you letting your system right itself for now?
Oh, something else weird that may be related: about two weeks after I got the Paragard I started getting headache pain behind one eye, and, (this is embarrassing) a blinking tic in that same eye that comes and goes. It's so annoying. I wonder if it could be related to the IUD? You've got me thinking now!

Hi LionGirl~ I would definitely attribute the headaches to the IUD. I had horrible migraines when I had the IUD. I never ever had migraines pre-IUD and they stopped as soon as i had the evil thing taken out. I was so upset because I thoroughly researched the IUD and couldn't come with anything wrong....I guess I was googling the wrong things....I am currently not in a realationship or dating for that matter right now so I don't have to worry about getting pregnant. I know at 40 years old I am DONE poisoning my body with synthetic hormones and foreign objects...My body needs to return to homeostasis. Next month will mark the one year anniversary of my removal of the IUD. While many of my symtoms have gone away I am still dealing with two very crucial upsetting ones....hairloss and weight which is hard to do when your hormones are all screwed up. But i know if I had the IUD for 3 years that it's going to take awhile to undo the damage that the IUD did to my body...I will get there...I just have to be patient with myself. Good Luck with your journey and whatever you decide. I hope the link I posted above to that other website was helpful.

Also, as long as you have the IUD it's pretty hard or next to impossible to chelate the extra copper from your systems since your body is constantly absorbing the copper from the IUD.
Interesting that my gyn before she removed it said it was imposible for there to be a chemical reaction with your body and copper IUD. Well when she removed it I asked to look at it and the copper coil was BLACK! I said to her sarcastically...isn't that interesting if there isn't a chemical reaction with copper why is it black? The copper should look as shiny going in as it did coming out .... Well my comment shut her up pretty darn quick! The black copper was proof that there is indeed a chemical reaction happening in your body.

I'm glad you're feeling better.
I had the Paragard for 12 yrs and am all to familiar with the inflammatory response (I have system lupus) and thankfully didn't have the type of reaction you did.
Did you have bloodwork to verify the copper toxicity?

Homeostatis sounds great!
I imagine that it is difficult to get the hair loss and weight gain back on track when your own hormones are now culprits in messing up what the IUD set into motion. :/ I hope those things level out for you soon!
I did some research last night after I read your post and found that facial tics are indeed associated with higher levels of metals in the system! Funny thing is that my ObGyn tested me for Wilson's disease before I had the Paragard inserted, so he is somewhat on the ball with things. I tested negative, but that doesn't mean I can't have higher levels of copper. Where else would that pesky tic come from?
I am making an appt tomorrow to get that darn thing out and see what happens. I guess it's back to condoms!
I can't believe your IUD had turned BLACK. That is so freaky. I am going to make sure they let me look at mine, and YES, that is evidence of a chemical reaction.

How did the inflammatory response from the IUD affect your Lupus? I am curious as I have CFS which has gotten loads better but I do still have flare ups. While CFS isn't Lupus, I believe I read that there is a similarity in how the body reacts to things it considers invaders, etc.

I don't think the IUD affected my lupus. I LOVE the IUD. I had the Paragard for 12 yrs and replaced it with the Mirena. I chose the Mirena because I flared so badly around my cycle. The Mirena has stopped by periods completely so no more monthly flares which has been great. Lupus is enough to deal with w/o having a guaranteed monthly flare.
I need a reliable, no brainer form of birth control w/o having surgery and I can't rely on my dh to get snipped. He's been saying for 14 yrs that he would do it but I'm still waiting. LOL! The Mirena is a two for one right now so I'm happy.
Our bodies react to foreign invaders naturally so it's difficult to say what's from (insert disease here) versus what's natural. With lupus, the body creates autoantibodies and attacks its own healthy tissue.
I don't believe the copper IUD changing color is necessarily a bad thing. Copper oxidizes when exposed to air and moisture so it's difficult to know what's normal oxidation and what's a problem. There definitely needs to be more research.
Have you seen the website endfatigue.com? Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum has some great info. My dr and I have added a few things to my med routine. (I have fibro also) I just ordered his Energy Revitalization System and am really hoping it helps.
What do you do for CFS?

The problem with testing is that it's not looking for your normal... just the normal for the general population.

Wondered how everyone in this thread is doing? If you have any doubts about the paragard and hairloss just do a google. There are SO many posts from women who have accessive weight gain, hair loss, etc. I've been reading for days.
I had mine for four years. I suffered hair loss years ago from accutane when it was way overdosed and learned more about hair loss then i care to know. When i first started having loss again from the iud i really supplemented with vitamin c, zinc, vitamin d...to counteract it. it worked...i had gone to the ob and was SO low on vitamin d, which now i see is so interesting because copper drains it out!
anyway now, four years in my hair just wont stop falling, i feel i have no shape in my facial structure, and i just cant get this 15lbs off. at first i thought, oh im in a relationship, we eat/drink more etc. but now i realize that i dont eat/drink more and i just couldnt lose the weight.
wondered how everyone is doing and say that i had my paragard removed yesterday so im seeing how things go.

IUD and hair loss
I am so thankful that I found this site. I thought I was losing my mind. I had my IUD inserted in 2009. The insertion process was not terrible for me. It was like a big pinch and it was done. Not long after it was inserted is when all the trouble started. I noticed my hair getting shorter and shorter I tried changing shampoos and conditioner. I started taking hair vitamins and a whole other list of things that didn't help. Many of you have stated that you gained a spare tire I did also and just like many of you it wouldn't go away. My periods were more painful but weren't lasting as long. My moodswings were the worst and I never had a clue what was going on. The headaches I starting getting were so painful it hurt to breath and I mean that as litterally as possible.Someone stated it was behind the eye that is where mine always started. Knowing that paragard didn't have any horomones I just knew that wasn't the culprit. About a year into my cousin got the Copper IUD. She went crazy literally she was paranoid and the mood swings were horrible for her as well. I started putting it all together and had mine removed in April of 2011. It is now September I have twice as much hair growth as I have had in the past two years. Mood swings are calming down a bit. Headaches don't come near as often all the way around I feel better. I also noticed that I was always depressed before but that is getting better. The inflamation quote makes perfect sense and I am so thankful that you took the time to inform other people of the problem. Today I have gained a little hope that I will be back to normal before to much longer. My vitamin D is really low also. If anyone has any advice on things to help with the weight loss it would be greatly appreciated as I have tried everything. I will avoid food with copper in them. Also if anyone is familiar with Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome you might be aware that the symptoms for Copper IUD and the symptoms for PTLS are very very similar.
I feel like paragard has ruined a chunk of my life and i am willing to do whatever is takes to get back to normal!

Lionness,
I'm so glad you had your IUD removed. I'm only one month out of having mine removed and I am so sad I wasted four years of my life with this stupidity.
Read this! It's only 2,500 plus comments from women with IUD's that have had problems. It's crazy...We aren't crazy!

It's hard to read it all, but you will be amazed what you learn. You are NOT crazy or alone. So many women are affected by this thing...though the doctors tell you it's so very safe! Hang in there!

Dollface, thank you so much for posting all of this information.
My head is spinning and I'm in tears.
I've had gorgeous Juliana Marguiles-type curls since puberty. People complimented my hair constantly. I was not born with the gift of a beautiful face so my hair was literally one of the only parts of my body that I liked.
Before I had the Paraguard put in in 2003, I did lots and lots of research and chose the Paraguard because it did not have hormones and it seemed to be the best choice of bc for me overall. I never found anything indicating the copper had negative side effects.
I've been losing my hair for about five or six years now though it's been much worse in the past couple of years. I thought it was because I turned 40 or I was having thyroid issues (nothing showed up on blood tests) or I had Adrenal exhaustion (couldn't afford the testing). For the past few months, my hair has gotten even worse; the curl is disappearing and the straight hair is thin and frizzy and strange looking. It is devastating to me.
I can't imagine any kind of new style that would work with 75% oddly-shaped curly hair and 25% sort-of straight, frizzy hair. I don't even know how to care for it anymore because nothing I do makes it look any better. I feel like shaving my head – I'll be even more unattractive but at least I wouldn't be heartbroken every time I look in the mirror.
I have a message into my gyno and plan on having the IUD removed ASAP. Right now, I'm not in a relationship and don't want one so birth control is not my concern.
If anyone who is reading this has had the Paraguard and hair loss and has had the IUD removed, could you please share your experience and whether or not your hair came back?
Thanks for listening everyone, I never post on message boards but just had to now because I finally have someone to share this with.

Bettina,
i am so sorry for the stress you are going through, but hang tight!!! it will get better as soon as you get that (*#$&()#*&@! out of your body!
I had a paraguard for four years. like you i was SO happy with myself for finding something so natural and non hormone based and safe. wow was i wrong!
long story short, your hair WILL come back, just get that thing out! id bet you have copper toxicity. i tried the zinc and vitamin c to try to counteract it and if youve had it for awhile, it just wont work.
i gained lots of weight on the paraguard, got really just bloaty (looked puffy in the face/lost all shape) lost hair, got all antsy and nervous...it was a mess. didnt put it together for FOUR years.
long story short, my hair is FINE now. it took six full months for it to slowly stop falling, but it did. and as it stopped falling, it started growing back. when i saw all the hairs growing in my hairline i was amazed at how much had fallen!
dont listen to what your gyno says. they will say oh paraguard is fine...its not. take biotin. i take 5 MGS a day...it will help get your hair back in shape.
look at this blog alone, or google copper toxicity and you will be sad at all that you read. write if you have any questions and please get the iud out and hang tight!!! will be the best thing you can do for yourself!

I am so relieved to have found this site!! I've had my Paragard IUD for ten years this month. Like many of you, I thought I had chosen the safest method out there. I had vaguely heard about copper toxicity but it was so rare to hear of instances that I went ahead with it. The first few years I was fine. No aches, no pains, normal periods, PMS, and I didn't have to worry about getting pregnant. Life got stressful so I attributed my beginning hair loss to stress. Then to getting older. I just assumed I was going to have the same issues my mom had. I used to have beautiful Keri Russel (before she cut it) long curls. Then I had kids, and got a hair cut. Then my hair started falling out and thinning and the only way to style it was to blow it out and add some volume with the round brush. I can't flat iron my hair, it looks horrible. But I assumed it was supposed to be this way. I also blamed all the coloring and bleaching I did to my hair. I quit smoking 10 months ago tomorrow and albeit some VERY stressful life situations, I managed to stay quit. But I was very stressed out as I had started pre-med classes to get into the nursing program and so I blamed my stress on a lot of new symptoms I started having shortly after I quit. Especially anxiety and panic attacks. They got SEVERE. I had had them before due to excessive anesthesia when my daughter was born (emergency c-sec after 15 hour labor with epidural and pitocin) which lasted a few weeks and again when I took some cold medicine about 5 years ago. lasting another few weeks. I also have motion sickness and vertigo and claustrophobia. But the panic attacks were so bad I was getting scared. It didn't help that we moved cross-country and I had to quit school during midterms so I assumed my body had shut down. It took a few months but fortunately, a lot of exercise helped. But the 12 lbs I gained after I quit smoking will not go away. I power walk 4 miles and mountain bike 5 miles every day and not an ounce to lose. I went from 118 to 130 and cannot fit into my jeans and so I thought I had inherited my mom's thyroid issues. I am waiting till my period stops so I can take my temperature and see if that's the key (message me if you want to know how to do that). My hair loss is still ongoing. I started researching and I believe that I may be vitamin b12 deficient as I had been eating a mostly vegetarian diet to lose weight which can depress the thyroid. But then it dawned on me to research about the IUD as I knew it could very well be since it was time to "replace" it. Now, I know I won't be replacing it with a good reason and DH will have to use condoms or have a V. I am happy to know that other women are or have gone through this too as I thought I was going crazy. Now I know that it's been the IUD all along. Recently, after some really informative anatomy and physiology classes, I learned that inflammation is the culprit of most diseases. And the IUD causes inflammation hence the many symptoms we feel. I read on another website that our body goes into flight or fight mode and if it's under constant attack, we store fat. Up until now, nicotine has helped keep the fat off apparently. The weight gain was always one of my worst fears. But I finally overcame it thinking I would be fine. Now, I am just relieved that I can shower without getting a panic attack and drive without anxiety. I am going to be scheduling an appointment to have my IUD removed but will have to wait until I can afford the office visit as I have no insurance. I am VERY eager to do this and start cleansing my body once and for all. Thank you to all of you who have shared your experiences!!! I hope to hear updates from you on how you are doing.

quick update
Hi All and thanks for the support.
What I didn't mention is that besides the hair loss, I have been dealing with:
depression
winter allergies (never had them before a few years ago)
chronic fatigue
poor memory, brain fog
extremely itchy skin
After sitting down and going through all of my health challenges, it seems they started about two years after I had the IUD inserted. Of course, they each showed up at different times so I didn't think they were related and I turned 40 a couple of years ago so I figured they were just part of the joy of aging.
I realize that my health challenges could be totally unrelated to the copper IUD. Regardless, it's coming out.
Both my naturpath and my holistic gyno have been very supportive and kindly didn't treat me like I'm a hypochondriac or overreacting. My naturpath wants to run some tests and my gyno said "hey, go with your gut, let's take it out".
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for reading.

bubble. its good to hear that your ob is respectful. it IS your body and you DO know what is the best for it. all bad things do not happen at one time. i was fine for two years, after the massive heavy heavy periods, then they totally stopped. then i was fine (i thought) but the weight crept up, my moods were all over the place, i was craving alcohol (so very very weird). so many odd symptoms that came at all times. hair loss was the most bothersome. thing is it all doesn't happen at once and maybe some things are not from the copper iud, but so many of them are caused by it.

I know this is super late, but I also had my paragard removed last week secondary to symptoms such as loss of hair/brittle and breaking, acne (in really weird places), super skin sensitivity (my weekly facial began to burn), hair treatments (ie color/perm) began to burn, fatigue, irritability. My doc also swore that it COULDNT be the paragard. She ran multiple test (thyroid, lupus, glucose, testosterone...) all came back normal. I MADE her run a copper lever. The average adult is about 0.9. More specifically you should be just about 1 tenth your body weight in kilograms. I am 68kilo. So I should have had a 0.68. My level came back at almost double... 1.37... Made her remove it that day. And encouraged her to brush up on some of the "potential" side effects because everyone's body CAN react a little differently. I told her will will retest in 6 months.

copper IUD
got the paraguard IUD back in 2003 six weeks after my daughter was born.
Ive had my IUD for nearly 9 years. For the first 5-8 yrs I loved my iud and had no real problems other than longer periods 7-8 days long. However for about the past year+ Ive been getting infection after infection after infection. Going back and forth between BV and yeast infections and its only been getting worse. I have gotten a yeast every single month for the past 8 months!!!! bad ones to. Ive been tested twice over for evey std under the sun, hiv, diabeaties, etc.
My vagina has been tortured so much that the skin has thinned and when I do get the infections my skin down there is so red swollen and raw it cracks open. I have to use an estrogen cream to strengthen the skin and sex is almost always painful for me.
I have not taken antibiotics or steroids or any rx's (beside yeast infection meds) in over a year so thats not why Im getting yeast infections. Im married and in a monogamous realationship. Both me and my husband have been treated to rule out us passing the infection back and forth. Ive also been seeing my normal doc and a dermatologist b/c Ive had weight gain and hairloss. hypothyroid runs in my family so I keep a constant eye on that and have my levels checked often. My thyroid is within normal range but I have a goiter.
Any way Ive recently been wondering if there is a connection with my hairloss and infections. I came across several forums of women describing the same symptoms as me and also came across a copper toxicity possibility.
since I've just have this gut feeling its due to my IUD (maybe only because ive had sooo long) so yesterday after having one of the worst yeast infections ever over the weekend I had the paraguard removed. When the doctor pulled out the IUD it was BLACK. He said he had never removed one that was black before. I may never know if the IUD is the reason Im going through what I am but I had to find out. And since Ive had it for almost nine years its not like Im losing my moneys worth. I hope that after having it removed I finally get rid of this vicious cycle of infections for good. So Im putting my self through a trial run, no BC other then watching my ovulation and condoms I want to give my body a chance to heal itself and recover. I may go back to the paraguard but I want to see how my body reacts to its removal first. Wish me luck.
I often thought through all this maybe 10 years is too long and it should be reduced to 5-7 years usage.
