My hair has been looking like s**t and thinning like crazy over the past 6 mos or so. Finally went to my doc to have my hormones tested. My testosterone was way way too high (everything else was normal, except iodine). Doc thinks I might have PCOS and/or insulin resistance. Did the glucose test this past fri and will be getting an ultrasound to check out my ovaries this coming week. It's pretty upsetting that, at only 29 years old, I may have PCOS and pre-diabetes! For reference, i'm 5 foot 3 inches, 118 lbs and plant based vegan i.e. very rarely eat junk food. Anyone else diagnosed at a young age and/or already living a healthy lifestyle?

Hi Sfaithj,
I don't have those conditions but a friend of mine has them both. She had been losing her hair (not a curly) and found out. Even though we are very close friends, I haven't asked her whether she is taking medicine now or what she is doing. If I feel that I can ask her more about it without making her uncomfortable I will, and will get back to you. My friend found out about this condition in her late 30s.

I hope there is some good treatment for you. {{{sfaithj}}}. It is very disheartening to find out about those conditions at such a young age, but I think there are treatments that will help. I wish the best for you. Please post back and let us know how you are doing.I will watch for your posts. Best of luck to you!

A vegan diet isn't necessarily nutritionally balanced or ideal for the human body, which evolved relying on a good deal of seafood (oily fish and molluscs especially).

There are specific nutrient deficiencies linked to diabetes, insulin resistance and PCOS which you might research. Certainly look at long chain omega-3s (DHA and EPA), overall balance of o-6 to o-3, bioavailable vitamin D, how low glycaemic index and low glycaemic load your diet is.

You may need more protein and healthy fats to stabilise blood sugar: seeds are a rich vegan source of both. Many grains and fruits are moderate to high GI: eat more pot barley, beans, lentils and berries instead.

A few years back, I was gaining weight like crazy (right after I got off of the pill) and was having abnormal cycles. I finally had enough and went to the doctor. She took blood to run some tests and called me back in a few days later. While I wasn't necessarily "diagnosed" with PCOS, she said I was borderline and needed to lose weight. So, she put me on Progesterone medicine and decided to see if that would help. It helped with my cycles but I was tired all of the time and didn't feel well while on it.

I found a new doctor and she put me back on birth control. I lost weight, felt better, and my cycles were right on track. During the Spring of last year, however, I had a pain in my side and went to see her. She said I had an ovarian cyst and sent me in for an ultrasound (I had never had one because my hormone levels were teetering towards PCOS, but weren't high enough to concern the doctor). Well, turns out I had a massive cyst on my right ovary. I had to have surgery to remove it, and during the surgery, she noticed my ovary was too far damaged, so she removed that as well. My other ovary is clear and doesn't have any cysts, but my hormone levels remain the same. I don't really have any of the other symptoms of PCOS besides weight gain and the irregular cycles. I'm hoping to be put on a lower dose of birth control now though.

I don't have pre-diabetes though. I'm only 26 years old, but know a lot of women my age who have PCOS. Best of luck to you during this frightening time!

My sister was diagnosed with pcos in her early 20s and also pre-diabetes ... I guess they can go hand in hand sometimes. She's been on the pill and some other medication and is doing fine now. Good luck!

Ladies,

I wanted to update ya'll. Did glucose tolerance test and transvaginal ultrasound. Turns out, I am hypoglycemic and I definitely have PCOS. Seeing my Naturpathic doc tomorrow for the PCOS. I don't know what she will recommend for it.

Thanks to everyone for their advice and support. I'm hoping these cysts on my ovaries will burst on their own and my hormones will become regulated.

Type 2 diabetes is the result of over production of insulin to compensate for high blood glucose which may eventually lead to cell exhaustion and no insulin production. Pre-diabetes is part of the type 2 progression to disease.

Still, you should closely monitor your glucose levels, eat a balanced diet, and exercise safely since the complications from type 1 and type 2 diabetes are the same when they are uncontrolled.

Now there is test to see if you have diabetes. I have a lot of people in my family with this disease. Plus my dad doctor is test for sometime. Because they think that he may next. My I don't explain myself on my first post. I been having sign of that was getting for years I don't know it diabetes. If I have been to the doctor I could have know sooner. After I get sick I talk to my doc and several nurses. Telling them them problem I was have before this happen. My grandma had type 1. If she had been alive. Things would happen different. She would have seen me getting sick. I do understand diabetes and different between type 1 and type 2. But I did a bad job explain myself the last post.
