freaking out about postpartum hair loss - please help!

i have i guess 3b / c type hair. it's very curly, brittle, fragile and thin. people are always telling me i'm crazy to say that my hair is thin, and its true that usually it looks like a big mass of curls, but it's definitely, definitely thin and fragile hair that just looks like a lot of volume because of the curls. if i braid it, all my hair reduces down to a very thin small braid. i usualy treat it with kid gloves - i only fingercomb when it's wet and conditioned, use no-poo, etc. it's always been long. it looks horrible short and grows really slowly. the one time in my life i cut it short i was miserable for two years.

now i'm around four months postpartum. my hair looked great while i was pregnant, so now of course i'm shedding the extra pregnancy hair...

that would be fine - i expected some shedding and losing the extra hair. but actually i'm losing all my normal hair too. it's been a month of handfuls of hair in the shower, tumbleweeds of hair all over the house, clumps coming out every time i touch my head. my hair has never been so thin or looked so bad. i feel like crying every time i touch my head or walk by a mirror. i have patches of scalp visible at my temples, and what's left of my hair is straggly and sick looking. nothing i can think of looks good - usually i wear my hair up in a ponytail, but now i can hardly keep a barette in my hair there is so little of it, and the weight of the barette hurts my scalp. wearing it down just draws attention to how thin and horrible it is. i'm at my wit's end with this. i'm really just freaking out. i've had difficult hair my whole life, and was so happy when i finally learned routines and products and styles that worked well. i have my routine, and now that it's not working i don't have any other ideas. i've heard the hair loss can last 6 months or a year - if it keeps coming out at this rate i will be bald by september. i would day i've lost 2/3 of my hair already overall.

and when it grows back i don't know what to do about that either. it takes years to grow back to its current length - so in the meantime will i have short frizzy curls everywhere?

please advise! how can i get through this period?
That's scary. I had one patch thinning and was freaking out. Have you seen your doctor/dermatologist about it so they could rule out anything not post-partum related?

Other than that maybe hair vitamins?

Playing with my hair is a hobby. Fluffy, fine natural 4a. Goal= Healthy, beautiful hair that retains its length.
Hear that crash? It's me falling off the CG wagon.
what are hair vitamins?

i'm away from home for the summer so away from my doctor. i tried to make an ob gy appt where i'm staying, but they claimed to have no appointments until september.
they usually keep emergency slots. GNC Ultranourishair is one type of hair MV.

I dont have any hair issues but i agree on hair vits or taking a good vit to start with . I have been taking vitamins for years and i know it not only helps your health but even your hair. Right now im taking the GNC hair vits since last Nov and have noticed faster growing hair. Im just looking for longer hair. I also notice more shine and looks like baby hairs growing all over too. I take 1 pill twice a day with a glass of water but also eat a meal with it too. It wont hurt for u to try.

On MakeupAlley I saw alot of positive reviews for Nioxin Smoothing Protectives Shampoo and Conditioner. Some of those women were also post-partum. The whole line is for thinning hair. I use the conditioner sometimes and it really increases the slip factor so the hair doesn't break so easy while wet.

I would also check with a dermatologist.

HI there! When I was pregnant with my now 3 year old, my hair grew so much in that time. Immediately after I had her, my hair began to break and shed badly. Not only did it do that, it also halted growing. It began very hard to the touch, dry and extremely brittle. It lacked all shininess. So, I was forced to do the BC. I would rather sprout short healthy looking hair than damaged and unhealthy hair for the sake of keeping the length.

My hair texture has changed and has become kinkier than before. And it is still growing very slowly. For the past three years it has been cut short, because it was taking too long to grow. I have challenged myself to let it grow back longer like it was. I love it long because there is so much more to do with it than short. The last time that I got it cut very short was 09/06.

I am still waiting for things to go back to normal as it was before pregnancy and birth. My growth is still very slow, but I have noticed that the shininess to my hair is returning and it is less brittle as well. So, I know it does take some time to get back to normal. Mine has taken more than three years.

However what you are talking about, just isn't normal. No matter how you slice it, losing that much hair is unexplainable from the average Jane. Please seek out a specialist and you may begin with getting a consult from your regular doctor. It is worth it to find out what is causing your extreme hair loss.

In the meantime, please review some pics and judge just how much hair you've lost and the changes. It will help gauge if it is as you say it is, or just that you notice it more because you are focused on it. I am trying to grow my hair right now and it seems that it will never ever grow fast enough. It is like the saying, "A watched pot never boils." So, I am trying to concentrate on growing long, strong, and healthy hair to begin with, so that I am never short haired again. So, this will help you and the doctor determine just how much has been lost and if this is something serious or not. Hopefully, your body/hormones will soon return to normal. Because I know that this cannot be a happy place for you right now.

Please keep us posted! We're here for you.

i know this is posted late but i had similar problems after my baby as well. my hair was lot like lovemylocks said hers was. it took a long time for my hair to stop shedding excessively (almost 3 years). have you tried birth control pills? that was suggested to me at the time. i took them for a year but didn't see a change while i was on them. you may have better luck. . Nioxin also has hair vitamins as well. i use these now. i eventually got a hair cut and that is part of what put me on the path to being natural.

I will keep you posted for sure!

Last question - do you take them all at one time? If so, any stomach upset? I'm thinking right before breakfast so I can get it over with for the day

TIA!

I also add a regular high potency multivitamin to the mix to give me what these are missing since they are mostly for the hair. I haven't had a problem with them messing with my stomach and I have taken them plenty of times on an empty stomach. I take them with juice, water, milk, protein shake, or whatever I can find to drink.

Then at night, I take one more hair vitamin, biotin 1000mcg tab, and MSM 500 mg capsule.

I don't go by the directions on the bottles because most of them will have you taking them 3 to 6 times a day. Yikes, and whatever is too much will only get flushed down the toilet. So, I do it twice a day. I feel that it should work according to the link that I gave that explains the dosage needed to get results.

Also, I have noticed that my nails are very healthy (very white tips and nice fleshy toned base), growing longer and stronger fast. I have not measured my hair yet, but I will say that it seems more moisturized, shinier than before, and stronger. So, if my nails are benefiting I am sure that my hair is as well since they are both made of keratin, but takes a little longer to show the growth.

You have big beautiful curls. I bet your hair looks awesome when pulled up and the curls are allowed to hang or in a nice thick fancy ponytail. And the color is really nice as well!!

Thanks for the help and kind words. I wish my hair still looked like the pictures but stress has taken its toll. I'll give the vitamins a try. After 3 weeks on the UltraHair Nourish and Nioxin, I'm not noticing anything BUT it's only been 3 weeks. I think I'll finish the month and try your regiman. Please keep posting or PM me with your thoughts and results.
