Rogaine to help thin hair due to hypothyroidism
I have thin hair due to hypothyroidism. I've been taking Armour Thyroid for about 4 months now. I thought my hair would improve with the medication, but so far it hasn't changed. Yesterday my husband noticed how thin my hair is and suggested I try Rogaine.
Is it an option for this condition? Has anyone tried it? What are the risks? Do you have to use it forever once you start? Will it change the texture of my hair?

I've heard with rogaine you have to keep using it. I've heard lots of raves for Nioxin. This stuff incourages hair growth, is doctor recommended and can be found in salons all over.
And here's a website I found for hairloss a while back. Women's hair loss
Hope that helps.

Are you sure you are getting enough Armour? Are you feeling back to normal other than your hair? (Most people need at least 120-180mg.)
Also, it could just be a shedding time for you. When I switched to Armour, it was in the fall, and my hair quit falling out.... but this summer it has been shedding quite a bit. (Not as much as before Armour though.)
It will also take longer than 4 months to notice a difference. How fast does hair grow? 1/4 inch a month or something?
Good luck!

Definitely make sure your armour is at the right dose.
I've been using Rogaine 5% for a while now. It's helped to regrow over half my hair.
Yes, once you start using Rogaine, you will always need to use it. Not a big deal. It takes less than 30 seconds to apply. It's like brushing your teeth, washing your face, etc.. just part of your routine.
I also take Biotin 5000mcg every day.
IMO, Nioxin is a waste of money. That stuff is pricey.

1) +1 to the suggestions to make sure you are on the right dose for your thyroid condition.
2) Be very gentle with your hair. My curly hair journey started when my hair began thinning and my derm told me to stop blow drying, not brush it and be as gentle as possible with my hair.
3) My derm recommended Rogaine. When the foam came out I switched from Rogaine solution to the foam because my derm said it is much easier to use and he is right.
It is made for men at 5% but my derm said instead of using it twice a day, which is the recommendation for men, just use it once a day, to get about 2% which is the recommendation for women.
You do have to use it forever. It's expensive but it lasts a very long time. I couldn't open the generic version and brought it back to the store. They opened it and it spilled all over, so I just buy the Rogaine now. It hasn't changed the texture of my hair at all, and I haven't had any side effects. I really recommend it. Best of luck to you!

My mother is on levothroxin for her hypothyroidism. she discovered her condition because she was concerned about the amount of hair she was loosing. Her medicine has greatly improved her condition but her Iron was actually the culprit for her hair and lack of energy.

I also have thyroid issues and agree with all the above. The only thing I have to add is my hair has been very dry. I would recommend you make sure you are meeting your hairs needs ( moisture/protein) based on your hair type. I mean I have to use a rediculously amount of moisture for my short hair

I agree. I'm on levothyroxin but my hair was still falling out. Found out that I'm severely low on iron. Been taking it for a month along with biotin and my shedding is getting better.

I have Graves' disease and hypo without meds from RAI. I currently take synthroid. It took 3 years but I finally feel 80% I would say. My hair fell out when I was hyper and hypo. Now it has stabilized. My strands are thick and shiny doesn't feel as thin. My hair was dryer and flatter when hypo and greasy when hyper. I'm hoping to be able to grow really long hair.

This is an oldish thread, but I'm posting with the hopes that someone may have an answer.
My hair is thinning in the front, and I have been considering Rogaine, but all of the application instructions keep taking about putting it at your part, but that is not a problem for me. If I were to use it, would i part and apply to the thinning areas specifically?

I put it all over my head... just separate the hair and apply to the scalp. I use the men's 5% once a day.
I can take several months for Rogaine to work but it's worth it (if it works for you).

I am on Naturethroid for hypothyroidism which is similar to Armour. I found out when I went to the doctor because my hair was shedding so much. But as said above I was low in iron also and that has mostly in my opinion been the culprit for my hair thinning. So a good blood work up would be great and make sure they test the ferritin levels that's how I found out it was the iron. The ferritin is the iron stored when just iron was checked I came up normal.
I would also suggest a good multivitamin and fish oil. I have been using some essential oils also, not on my scalp but on the bottom of my feet and I was shocked that my naturopath reduced my Naturethroid this last time I went in. The jury is still out but I am hopeful that that is helping.
I started using Shea Moisture hair growth milk and I think it is working. I like it because it is organic. Its weird but it feels like the individual strands are thicker and some areas that are thinner aren't as noticeable anymore. I am hoping that it helps with shedding too but I just started using it about a week ago so I don't know if it will or not yet.

I second everything that Crimsonshedemon says. I apply Rogaine (I finally found a generic that I can open without difficulty so I use that) every night. I'm really lazy about it and sloppy and I just squirt the foam on my fingers and smoosh it onto the thinning areas. Then I wash off my fingers. (Don't want hairy fingers LOL). It works fine.
Good luck - I hope you find something that works for you.
