curls and birth control pills

Like Tree3Likes

I also started getting curls when I hit puberty and absolutely loved them. I was a definately 2B. However, I had to go on BC for endo, and slowly but surely over the past two years my hair has gone completely straight, it wont even hold a perm!!!!
Anyone know of any way to stay on a form of BC to control the endo, but still get my curls back?
Going on BC did pretty much the same thing to me. I'm still on them, but I started CG in June and finally got some curl back. And they're better than they were before BC! Check out the going shampoo-less section for more info.
CG since 6/15/08!

Just today, I got the Implanon. If you've never heard of it, it's an implantable birth control. It's a stick, about the length of a toothpick and width of a matchstick that gets inserted to the inside of your upper arm. It's kind of sore right now but, that's to be expected. I was on Loestrin 24, but after finding out that I have a brand new fibroid (I just had some removed in July) that is larger than one that was left in by my doc during surgery, I've decided to go an alternate route. So this stuff is almost like the Depo shot only I WILL NOT gain weight Now, this only contains pregestin, there is no estrogen or testosterone (like the depo) in it. So either my periods will stop altogether or I'll have some spotting here and there. I'll report to you all and let you know in a few months whether or not this does anything to my curls.

At the very top of my head (close to center forehead) my hair is 3c and it is also 3c at the nape near my neck. The rest is a 4a/4b combo.
I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. I started the pill back in Feb for a change of BC and i had maybe 3a or B hair....but i went on the pill and i noticed my curls starting to get looser which i was not happy about but i stayed on the pills till this past end of Oct when i came off them for health reasons. Now my hair is not back to its natural curl just yet :i dont expect it too cause its too soon: but i have noticed that already my hair is feeling very rough and dry. Now i usually wash my hair every other day or every 2 days depending on what i have been doing and it usually does wonder for my hair and curls. I usually wash and then put some product in to control my frizz and the next day my hair is soft and bouncy and i love it! But i just noticed tonight how rough it felt and when i was trying to comb my hair i was worried it would break on me! Has this happened to anyone else who went off the pill? Will my hair go back to its natural soft self over time? Can anyone recommend any products to help make my hair feel softer and safer? Will there be a chance that my curls come back soon too? Thanks so much for your replies!

I divide it into 4 equal sections and put about a tablespoon or more of conditioner in each section. Once it's super saturated with conditioner I gently finger comb, let it sit for a while, rinse and then put in my leave in. Also when I go to bed I put aloe vera gel in my hair and then put it in a loose bun. I've also stopped diffusing it. My hair has gotten a lot softer and doesn't seem to break as easily. Hope that helps you! The pill made my hair much less curly and I'm hoping soon I'm going to see some more curl come back, especially at the roots.

Thank you for that!! Its good to know others can relate to that. I am going to start using major conditioner. Plus i got Vo5 to put in my hair as well when i wash it again. Hopefully that will start soon too. Thanks
I really hope that this new BC is responsible for this...and I'm praying that it's just my hair being in a bad mood. I co-washed today and used Suave Coconut Condish for the first time (I was using Trader Joe's Tea Tree Oil Condish, but I ran out and the Suave is cheaper). Anyways, after wetting my hair usually my hair coils right up. I have pin-curls pretty much everywhere and loser curls everywhere else. Anyways, it didn't tighten up once the water hit. So then I went ahead and threw some condish on and started working it through and still, no tight curls! At this point I was really concerned. So I rinsed after working it for a bit and put some more condish in because I was going to leave some in and I touched my head again before getting out and my hair was still loose! It wasn't curly. It was as if I put heat on it to straighten it out right before getting in the shower. The only way I could get any curl definition today was by using my Denman and I hardly ever have to use the Denman for definition. Even after my hair dried, still no tight curls. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
Your situation sounds very similar to mine. In matter of a month (last March, 0 my hair just changed to wavy and got softer and softer and Its been hard to adapt...it doesnt feel like its me! my curls represented my personality and I dont know how to explain it, they were very ME! Sounds very dramatic but its true). Now I look older and sophisticated, which is cool, but not me (yet) I am wild and outgoing but I notice a mild change in my personality too when my hair completely changed. I remember cutting my hair super short, with lots of layers, people said oh its because you cut the curls out, so now its pass my shoulder but its still just wavy, no more curls. The only thing besides cutting my hair is that I went on Yasmin. I have been off of that too though for 6 months and still no sign of my curls coming back. If anyone knows what is causing this, please let me know!

When I hit puberty my hair went soooo curly. Then I went on the pill. I have never realized that that could have been the reason why my curls disappeared. I have only recently gone back to wearing my hair curly and its definatley not the same. Interestingly though, I could not work out why the hair close to my roots (maybe first 10cms or so) are a lot curlier - from then on my hair is straight. I could not work out why this was, I thought is must have been damage but that made no sense.... then I read this thread and clicked.... about a year ago I changed from a strong BCP to a weaker pill, which happens to coincide with the change in my hair??? Is this possibly the cause?

Ah, I never even made the connection!!
I started back on BC pills at the end of August and about mid September I remember saying to my girlfriend "I'm not sure what happened here but my hair is much looser than it used to be!"
I'd say it's a 3A now with some 2C and 3B thrown in the mix. My hair used to be all ringlets and its now just a big blend. The underlayer is even a 2A sometimes, I'd say

Your curls will come back! I was on hormone pills and then Loestrin due to bleeding. I had Mirena put in around Feb. 2007 and my curls came back!

trying various aubrey products currently.
When I first started this thread several months ago, I was noticing changes in both curl pattern and the texture of my hair. At this point, I barely even recognize my own hair. The first photo below is of me about two years ago before going on the pill, the second was taken 3 weeks ago.

However shallow it sounds, I generally feel pretty down about the condition of my hair now. I find a lot of hair on my pillow and on all of my clothes, and my hair doesn't even feel or look like my own. I guess I need to go off the pill once and for all now if I want to have any chance of getting my hair back.

So my curls came back after my little bout with the Suave Condish. I'm thinking it was a combo of that and the Implanon all at once and my hair freaked out a bit. I believe it's found it's balance and is back to it's curly glory. So far the Implanon is working wonders for me, except my mood was severely bad for 2 weeks. I seem to be feeling more like my normal self now and I think it was just an adjustment. Also I haven't noticed any breakthrough bleeding and I'm coming up on my 3 week mark. Usually with the Loestrin I would started bleeding again by now. I'll have another week to go to see if I even have a regular monthly period or no period at all. I'll come back and update again.
Well, I stopped using the Suave, it was drying my hair out, or should I say it wasn't moisturizing it enough. I'm back to the same issue I was having before with the Loestrin with the bleeding. I haven't even made it to my full second month of the Implanon yet and I'm starting to feel defeated with the issues I'm having. I'm trying to be patient and wait it out. So far the Implanon hasn't seem to have an affect on my curls, just everything else lol.
Oh my Gosh, I am having the same problems as all of you!

My hair used to be SUPER thick with 3a curls in high school, but now it's fairly thin and 2b/c! I went on BC to regulate hormones and help with acne. I am currently on Seasonal right now and am going to stick with it for another 2 months and see if my skin improves before deciding to quit.

But I agree that I miss my thicker curls...now my hair falls straight in many places, and I have to wash it more often.
Has anyone found any benefit to switching to another pill? I am on my third pill in two years, but I am willing to try anything to start being happy with my hair again. My doctor did respond to my concerns about my hair, but she said it didn't "look thin" and I had no bald patches. It doesn't look thin because I had so much hair to begin with, but it's down to about half of what it was before I started the pill. I also hate watching it fall out every time I turn my head. It's embarrassing to find hair everywhere.

Has anyone gone off the pill and gotten her old curls/hair back? If so, how long did it take?

I'm desperate I guess. I don't really want to go off altogether especially if it is unlikely I will be able to get any hair back.
i need to post my before and after pics. I barely have hair anymore at all it seems.... I have no idea what to do
3b, and increasingly c pieces... my curls will always be a little confused, but that is just fine!

Count me as another one having the same issue! It never occurred to me that it could be BC. I just thought it was aging, or maybe having a lower protein diet for the last eight years (vegan diet). But really, I think my hair hasn't been the same since I was around 20-22 (1994-1996), and I went on BC when I was 21, and have been on it ever since.

For a look at how much thicker and curlier my hair was then, see my first album on Fotki (link below). When I was doing CG for a while in 2004, I did get some curls, but it was so much WORK, and they were flat, with no volume. My hair used to be big. I just found another picture today, with wonderful big curls, from 1995. My boyfriend couldn't believe my hair in that picture! It so sad that I don't have that hair anymore...

I'd love to go off the BC, but, you know...I need it! I suppose I could research the more permanent solutions (I've thought about it before since we don't plan to have children), but that seems like a drastic step for my curls!

My curls are still here AND I'm on 2 different BC's right now...yes at the same time. Long story, my health isn't getting any better and it's just, it's horrible right now, BUT my curls have remained. So in addition to the Implanon which is progestin only, my doc now also has me on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. This stuff sucks, it makes me retain water and bloat soooooo badly, it's very discouraging. I was told to try it for 1 month to see if it fixes my "issue." So far it has not, and it looks like there may be another possible surgery soon for me (my first one wasn't even a year ago). I told my sister I'd finish this month out, even though I really want to stop taking this pill right now. I didn't have any weight retaining or gaining with the Implanon. The only plus of this Ortho is clearer skin, well, that's not really a main issue for me. So, my curls thus far have stuck around without me having to change products or my routine.
