Fingers crossed, no shedding or thinning issues yet. Just a dry rough texture. I thought it could've been highlighting but I've done that before with no changes like this.

Definitely. Yaz caused me such severe dry and broke out skin I had to go off of that particular kind.
If you get really concerned, try a different kind. There are so many dosages and types out there. Make sure you're getting the one that works best for you. Sometimes you don't even have to go into the Gyn, you can just call and speak to the doctor, tell her/him the side effects and they'll switch you over.
I'm on a low-dose pill, Loestrin, so I figure it's one of the least likely pills to give me side effects. I think I can deal with the dryness, granted it dosen't get worse. I only plan to be on it 3 mons. max. I'm not on it for birth control - I have long periods with bad cramping and horrid PMS so I'd like to see if pills make a difference, maybe can alter my cycles long-term. I'll probably go off them a month early if this dryness continues and interferes with my sleep. The past few nights I've had a hard time getting to sleep and getting back to sleep when I wake up probably because of this ITCHING.
Oh ugh. Have you tried anything more natural?
Such as the cream I mentioned above? It shortened my periods and eased my cramps a tiny bit. You may have better results with it since they're thinking it's fibroids or something for me. It's super easy to take, and it won't give you any side effects. You can even put some on when it's the time of the month where you have cramps and it helps (back/stomach).
Also maybe a hormone balancing tea, like one Yogi makes. It's called "Mooncycle" and it gets some pretty rave reviews. You can buy it at Trader Joe's and Amazon.com in bulk- couple months supply for $20.

I tried a Yogi Dong Quai tea - Dong Quai is an herb that is supposed to be helpful for painful periods. It gave my uterus a mild burning sensation and also tasted terrible (like really strong black licorice and celery). I tried adding parsley to my diet too and it did the same thing. Maybe that's a sign that it's helping but I didn't like it. You have to be careful of natural stuff just like you would other medicines. Some herbs can have interactions with prescription drugs (I take an anti-depressant) which I never expected.

I drink raspberry leaf tea almost daily because my parents own a raspberry bush and the leaves are free plus there's a lot more info out there on this. I suppose it doesn't matter now since I'm on the pill already and that is taking care of the period pain so far. But I'm looking at other things I can do long-term (I definitely plan to take bc at least another month). I've heard about the progesterone creams but since I don't have a known hormone imbalance or irregular cycles, I hesitate to do something like that. I'll bring it up to my doctor though (I see him next month). Thanks for the suggestions!

My doctor put me on low progestrone pills, because I had a sensitive stomache, and wasn't sexually active and she said it wouldn't mess with my hair. (Added bonus) So I never noticed a change in my curls

Is that what they mean by "low" pills: Ortho Tri-Cyclen Low, Yasmin, Loestrin, etc.? I was never clear on that... I figured low pills meant they contain lower doses of all hormones. I asked specifically about no-estrogen pills but my doctor told me they were mainly for breastfeeding women and wouldn't do me much good. Loestrin, what I'm taking, is a low pill. I'm not sure if what I have is a low progesterone pill, but the lower the better on all hormones is ideally what I want because I don't need birth control and I don't have very irregular cycles. I'd just like shorter periods and less intense PMS. I actually experienced the worst moodswings ever for my first cycle on the Loestrin. It only lasted a day, at least.

Do you notice changes in your skin from the pill, Mysticspiral? Skin dryness is the only side affect save for the PMS moodswings that I've had so far. I'm not sure if my change in hair texture is a result of the pill b/c I'd think the pill would only affect the hair that is coming in now. The timing is definitley funny, though, so it could be due to the pill.

I've had this reaction, as well. My hair was at it's curliest when I was on Desogen and the NuvaRing in college. I switched up to Seasonique, which raised my blood pressure rediculously, so I was taken off for 6-7 months, and my hair fell so flat I barely recognize it. I've just started taking Orthotricyclen Lo a month ago, so hopefully I'll see some improvement...

Oh my gosh. It is amazing to read these posts because I have been having the same problem and my doctor thought I was crazy. I have been on the pill (Lo Ogestrel) for about 6 months and I noticed my hair started falling out horribly and losing a lot of its curl. It took me about this long to realize it started when I started taking the pill. I have been on Depo Provera for only a couple weeks and my hair isn't falling out anymore. I know a lot of women have concerns about the shot but it works great for me. You don't have to worry about taking it everyday and I don't get periods when I get the shot every three months (I've been on it before). A lot of women are afraid of weight gain but I say they are just blaming it on laziness. If you eat healthy and exercise hormones shouldn't make you gain a huge amount of weight. I have also heard that IUDs produce less hormones so that might be worth exploring for some people. I highly recommend trying Depo Provera if you are having problems with your hair. It may not be for everyone but I love it!

I just found this! I quit BC maybe 5 months ago and my hair has been falling out like crazy. I think the shedding is slowing down though.

For those who lost hair after quitting BC did it grow back?

For the record, Yaz is evil. Turned me into a miserable monster. I was so angry while on that pill. I took Ortho/generic for 15 years and only lasted six months on Yaz. That's what made me quit altogether.

I just thought I'd point out that Depo Provera carries SERIOUS health risks, much beyond the normal slight increased risk of heart attack/stroke that you get on the pill. Plus, if you happen to react badly to it, it's stuck in your system for 3 months.

Smile lost my curls

I have been reading through some of the posts and I thought I would share my exp....as a little girl I had very curly hair. In the end of elementary school through middle school my hair went straight. I got my period my sophomore year and my hair got curly again and stay curly through college. Then I went on the pill and my hair went straight again!
I have been off the pill for a couple weeks now and haven't noticed any change yet, but my fingers are crossed - I want my curls back

Up to the age of 6 I had curly, red hair -- what my parents would call "Shirley Temple" hair because of its redness and curliness.

But then my hair inexplicably darkened somewhat and got more wavy and less curly, although it still retains some of its redness.

I keep wondering if it hadn't changed, would I have hair like this (Melissa Auf der Maur):

I guess I should be thankful for being blessed with some natural curls; millions of women spend fortunes trying to put curls in.

I had the same experience as you with my hair...very curly at an early age, then wavy/straight during early puberty years, and then curly again through college up until I went on birth control pills...they slowly diminished to the point where I was only curly at the ends of my hair. I never made the connection until this year when I stopped taking them. I went off the pill in mid-January and 3 weeks later my curls reappeared with a vengeance.
I truly believe the pill caused my curls to diminish greatly...my old curls are back and I'm so happy!

I have totally lost my curls on Yaz. Did you go on another birth control and your curls came back. I need to get on something else, but I don't know what to switch to that will bring back my curls.

I know some friends who have had this problem, too. The same thing can occur during pregnancy.

I am on a very very low-dose pill (because I am at risk for breast cancer, it runs in the family, so I don't want high estrogen which I already have naturally!) and it is called Loestrin24Fe. It is GREAT. I have had absolutely NO side effects, and my hair has remained unchanged.

Talk to your ob-gyn, and see if she can recommend something to you about this problem. If not, bring up the possibility of trying an even lower dosage, such as Loestrin. Good luck!

i've been using Diane Mite for almost 2 years. before i started using birthcontrol pills i had very thick and coarse hair with a lot of volume. right now it looks like i have lost a lot of hair if i compare myself with older photos.
so is there anyone who "recoverd"? i mean: after taking the bc pills, did ur hair change to normal just like before u started taking the pills?

I've been on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for about 7 years now and I have notice no problems. I just stop taking them this month because I've been on BC for 13 years and I want to see if I can have children since I've never been prego before.

I am so glad to see this thread. I was feeling all low because I just got a couple of inches of DRY ends cut off and wondered what was up. The only thing I have changed, besides being more active is switching from hateful Ortho Tri-Cyclen to Enpresse (Nordette) and I am wondering. I would like to blame something other than me not wrapping it up at night like I should. This month I will be meticulous and see what happens.

WHAT?????? YOU CAN LOSE YOUR CURLS FROM BC? I've taken different types of birth control to control my PCO (poly-cystic ovaries) and finally settled on orthotricycline because it's the only one that doesn't make me depressed. Unfortunately, the first bc I tried (NuvaRing -- DON'T TRY IT) made me severely depressed and gain 50 lbs in three months. But it didn't affect my HAIR! Now I'm scared!

I already posted on here but it was a long time ago.

I started out taking FemconFE (the chewable birth control.) That made me very nauseous for months and did not provide relief of my heavy periods. It did however, give my skin a nice glow and clear up my skin. No weight gain. Don't remember it doing anything to my hair.
Then I took YAZ when it first came out, and my gyno was convinced it would help my acne. Instead, my acne got rash like, red and painful. I was taken off of it quickly, never really finding out how it would affect my period. I think it did something to my hair too, made it frizzy.
Then 4 months ago, I was put on Loestrin 24. My skin looks amazing, I put on no weight, but it did absolutely nothing for my periods. They last 4 days, but they are just as heavy. last month I had hot flashes, vomiting and diarrhea at night on it. My blood pressure was all over the place too.

Now I'm on Lybrel, started it 2 weeks ago. Had nausea at first but it's totally gone now. Now I'm hoping everything goes well these next couple months with weight/acne/periods/hair. Haha.
