Exclamation birth control and curly hair

Ive been on birth control for about a year now and my hair has changed significantly within the last 4 months. I used to have more of 3A type hair and now it is more 3B, my hair is more straight on the top and it has remained that way but it is just more frizzy now and underneath my top layer of hair in the middle it is like crazy ringlets that look almost like some african americans natural hair (not saying this is bad, just saying my hair has changed a lot). It was getting a little bit more straight and calmed down which was pretty and then I left for college and it is crazy. Is there a type of birth control that will not change my hormones as much? Do you think the birth control shot would be any different? HELPPPPPP

No way. I'm on depo shot & I will not be continuing it. I'm having all sorts of physical problems & my period will NOT go away. I have had ONE WEEK of no bleeding in between periods & its making me miserable!! Lol

I always had very curly, soft, medium-tight curls since I was a kid. I Went through a lot of GYN issues since 2008 with a lot of meds and all. However, I never had a problem with my hair. My hair had crazier parts in puberty - used to be so crazy that with any humidity it would poof, and now it is STICK STRAIGHT at the crown of my head and seems to want to curl at the roots but tuckers out.

I went from TriCLow to Loestrin and then went cold turkey, but the straight hair started when I went back on the pill with Aviane December of 2009.

Should I switch? I've never heard of this Aviane BC before - I'm just afraid of hormonal imbalance with pH levels and whatnot.

Point being, I have little to no self-confidence without my natural hair. I have to style and curl everything because I look like a cocker-spaniel with this weird pin-straight burnt out hair. I can't even wear it in a ponytail because it sticks straight out in the back.

My friends think I'm crazy. But I KNOW I'M NOT!

Any suggestions?

Then I went on the pill and my hair went straight again!
I have been off the pill for a couple weeks now and haven't noticed any change yet, but my fingers are crossed - I want my curls back
I had the same experience as you with my hair...very curly at an early age, then wavy/straight during early puberty years, and then curly again through college up until I went on birth control pills...they slowly diminished to the point where I was only curly at the ends of my hair. I never made the connection until this year when I stopped taking them. I went off the pill in mid-January and 3 weeks later my curls reappeared with a vengeance.
I truly believe the pill caused my curls to diminish greatly...my old curls are back and I'm so happy!

I am SO happy to hear that, because I had the exact same experience! I'm on Kariva (generic Mircette) and I think I'm going to call my doctor to change. I've been on it for four years now, and my hair was 2b-3b before and now it's only curly at the ends! It took the course of 3 years to completely change though, which seems longer than everyone else. I've been going crazy trying to figure out what happened to my hair though and I think I finally figured it out! I want my curls back! I hope it won't take 3 years to curl up again! Oy..

So, has anyone here tried going completely off the pill yet? If so, did your curls ever come back?

Last time I was pill-free was 2009. Ironically, that was when my hair was curliest. It curled right from the root. Now it is practically straight, and I have to do so much to make it curl as much as it can. The curliest it gets now is 3a, and that's with tons of scrunching and product. It used to be 3b all around, without doing anything.

So, I've been thinking about stopping synthetic hormones all together. Thing is, I know it can cause hair loss big time. And I already had hair loss with this other pill I used to be on. This is why I'm asking if anyone already has stopped the pill, and what has happened.

Thumbs up Try taking cryselle

I understand my hair has a mind of its own, and yes BC pills do effect your hair. Anychange in hormones would. For those of you who have painful periods,- I understand. I do too so bad that nothing worked. Finally dr started me on my pills contineously. So I take them 3 packs straight in a row for 84 days (skipping placebo pills) I have been doing this for about 6 years now, and I only have a period 4 times a year and they are a breeze. I used to have to use super plus tampons for 7 plus days now, I get a way with regulars and only need them about 3 or 4 days. If your Gyno will write your script that way then insurance companies will have to honor it and pay. After about a year (my hair became normal again) I even have ringlette curls in spots I love it.

Default depends on the type of the pill

Hi all

from my experience, the pills that make your hair less curly are the ones with estrogen - nearly all of them. Most pills today contain estrogen+progresteron.
But...
Estrogen might cause high colesterol and trigliceride levels, to the point that it's unhealthy. that's what happened to me.
So my doctor switched me to a pill which contains only progresteron. it's less recommended, because it makes your period irregular. for me, it was first 2 months of constant but very minor bleeding, and since then - nothing. But I guess it's different for every girl. This pill is also recommended for women who are breastfeeding, by the way..

I was VERY happy with my hair a bit less curly, it made it very beautiful.. but I can't really go back on those pills. But I see that most girls here are unhappy with that, so you should ask your doctor about estrogen-free pills.

Also - this is the only place I've ever found a reference to this subject, so thanks!! I thought I must be crazy to think that..

I feel your pain I was on Micrgoynon for 3 years and then i thought it was affecting my moods so i changed to gedarel....from May till June my hair slowly started going straight...its now early October and the majority of my hair is dead straight and so thin on the sides you can see my scalp it was 3A originally and now its horrible. It used to be so thick i couldnt even get a hair bobble through it and now its thin and straight. i've totally lost all my confidence. Ive gone off gederal now and im on cerazette. Ill give it a month or so and if my hairs not even a little bit curlier im going back to microgrynon Im also on a totally new diet for my hair and on 4 different vitamines. Iron, Zinc, Folic Acid and Silica Complex, they all promote hair growth and healthy hair so maybe try those xxx all the best!

I've been on the depo for 4 yrs now due to uterus didelphys ( double uterus). Due to my condition I've had really bad cramps and more bleeding than a normal female would go through :\. Cuz of the periods I had, I was weak and looked like a ghost all the time and even not having periods of months going by. Now it's been this long on birth control, my body hasn't been the same. My hair is weak, brittle and more drying than ever. I've tried almost everything to maintain it. Also it causing my intestines (large) not be regular. Now I think my body is rejecting it since the cramps are coming back just before I was on b.c and I've been spotting almost close to getting the shot for the past 2 yrs now. I though I was the only one going through this and not even my mom understands this and thinks I'm obsessing over it. *rolls eyes*

Default New to Bc

My doctor just put me on birth control, and he said my hair could change but he didn't say how it would change, and after reading these, I'm terrified I'll lose my curls. Please tell he it's only temporary. D;

It's funny reading this.. Not like funny ha ha. The pill seems to have GIVEN me curls. I was always a wavy growing up, never had actual defined curls (but I never really 'tried' either). Interesting that I seem to be on the opposite end of the spectrum.
