B/F is having trouble with dryness on scalp

I thought I could maybe find a reason here to help out my b/f. He has battled with dandruff and dry scalp or at least that's what I think it is. Big flakes just come off his head and he gets sores (but sometimes I think that's because he picks at it too much).
Any ideas as to what may be causing this? He used to use Head and Shoulders when I first started dating him and has now moved to Paul Mitchell's Moisture shampoo. Could it be he's allergic to chemicals or could it be something more medical?

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Update: 10/12/2009 I can't stop playing with my curls!! So soft, shiny and manageable!!!! IN LOVE WITH DEVA Products!!!!!! YIPPPIE!!!!

Another possible culprit could be seborrheic dermatitis maybe. A dermatologist would have to diagnose this though.
A sulfur ointment always works for me.

His scalp is back to normal and he only has to use it every two days. He alternates with the Giovanni triple tea tree shampoo.

It's also possible that it's seb derm. I have a small patch near the base of my scalp that would get really irritated; I'm talking red, itchy, and tender. I didn't help much that I would scratch it until I drew blood. The patch didn't feel like dandruff because the flakes were thicker and more scaly. I went to the dermatologist and was told that I have seb derm. I used a sulfur shampoo, then a salicylic acid shampoo, and finally settled on Nizoral. After two uses the seb derm was under control and I hardly have any flareups. I cowash every day and use a low sulfate shampoo every 3 days.
