Does Your Stylist Respect Your Wishes?

Last year (November), I went to a stylist for a scalp massage, shampoo, deep conditioning, and medium-large twists. I spoke with her at length prior to this for about a month explaining my hair maintenance.

On the day of the appointment, I brought my own shampoo, conditioners (DC and leave-in), and styling cream.

I was literally shaking as I sat down in the chair because I have not been to a stylist in over 12 years. The results: Wonderful! Even the other stylists came around to see because they had never seen anyone fingercomb hair completely.

There have only been 3 stylists in my natural hair journey that have respected my wishes and treated my hair with gentleness. Why are those stylists so hard to find?.....

My current stylist does. She finger combs, trims exactly what I want off, the works. I'm wonder if the racial aspect is a factor because she is white and I found her only because she was the only stylist available that day who could do relaxers. I think her overall lack of familiarity with Afro textured hair lends her to really listen to me.

The AA stylists I have ever had experience with (save one) were more in a "relax hair straight" mindset and were not really open to suggestions, put chemicals on my hair that I did not ask for, and trimed WAY more than I asked for. It's like they took me for granted because they think they know my hair. Know what I mean?

@afrosheenqueen:

I do know what you mean! Two of the stylists have been white, and the other two, (including the recent one) were from Jamaica and Africa. The stylist from Jamaica grew up with natural hair being acceptable in her family, and the most recent one is from Africa who have worn her hair natural all of her life.

Unfortunately, the stylist from Africa is moving. Oh, well, at least I know there are still some stylists that respect the clients' wishes and hair.

only the stylist I have now does so.. I love her. She has her flaws (like takes forever to get started on my hair) but she works out of her home and the wait is very entertaining (shes hilarious and half of her clients are psycho so if shes not telling a story im witnessing craziness), and if im there too long shell also feed me LOL!
I love her because she does what I want, and if its bad or something I need to do shell tell me but still leave the decision to me. I havent been to her regularly since ive been wearing my hair curly, i only go occasionally to get trims now. I knew she was a keeper when I told her I only wanted a light trim and she didnt cut enough off!

Thats another thing, i go to her maybe every couple of months & theres no issues, my old stylist used to get an attitude if I came to her after 3 or 4 weeks instead of my usual two. Most stylists will do whatever to your hair to make it look good as long as THEY are the ones doing it. My hairdresser aims to keep your hair as healthy as possible. Shes gonna kick my butt when she finds out I dyed it, who does that!

My stylist does respect my wishes, and she's inexpensive. However, she's a bit kooky and talks A LOT during haircuts; I deal with it because I like her, and her work.

She just did a perfect job on my bangs, in fact.
I can get away with being my own stylist since my hair is only about 4-5 inches stretched. I got tired of wasting money for bad results, so I started "dusting" my hair about three months ago and I loved it!

Eventually, I will have to find someone who really knows how to handle natural hair, because I want my hair cut in a style.
