Porous and Coarse: Share your Hair Biography

This thread is for Porous and Coarse wavies and curlies to share information about their hair and hopefully learn from each other. I've posted the template and you can copy and paste it in to your reply to fill it out. When you have things to add or change you can just edit your post. The intention of these threads is for everyone to share their knowledge about their hair, even you don't know everything about it yet. I would expect most people to leave at least some questions blank. When you know more, you can come back and update your post.
If you are porous and medium texture, post to this thread.

Curl Pattern: 4a natural, 3b/c with chemicals (after styling and with a little "on-purpose" frizz)
Density: thick
Elasticity: normal
Characteristics: lots of shrinkage (naturally), about 4 inches of shrinkage w/ chemicals. Hair absorbs a lot...rarely gets weighed down

ModCG: I dilute shampoo and coat the hair shaft w/ conditioner. I also do pre-shampoo treatments
Hard water or soft water: I guess I have normal water. It def. isn't hard.
Average climate/dew points: I'm in NYC. High humidity in summer (I assume dew point follows suit). Snowy days probably also have higher dew points. I don't know...but, in general the climate is moderate to cold

Protein section:
Do you PT? If so how often? I PT more than normal b/c of the chemicals. 1-2x/week. As a natural, I never did PTs
How long? 5-10 minutes.
PT with heat or steam? If I PT once a week, I use steam. Twice a week, no steam
Favorite PTs: Aubrey GPB or VO5 moisture milks (a rather mild PT...but for my protein sensitive hair, it seems adequate)
Favorite products that contain protein? With the exception of that one PT, I use NOTHING with protein. I balance w/ A LOT of moisture.
Proteins your hair likes? soy protein (VO5), heat w/ mild protein, milk protein/glycoprotein (Aubrey GPB)
Proteins your hair dislikes?
I think if I use ANY protein in excess, my hair will be unhappy.

Moisture section:
Do you DT? If so, how often? YES...3x/wk
How long? Overnight (w/ baggy method)
DT with heat or steam? Once a week, I use steam
Favorite DTs: Neutrogena Triple Moisture, Curly-Q Coconut Dream (CURLS), Aubrey Honeysuckle Rose. the old Karen's Body Beautiful Hair Milk and an oil like avocado, olive or castor
Favorite products to moisturize your hair: I use deep conditioners as leave-ins. Leave-ins are never heavy enough for me. I do dilute Aubrey HSR w/ water though.
Ingredient likes: Lot of oils!
Ingredient dislikes: usually glycerine and aloe gel (though I've used products w/ these that work well for my hair)
Do you seal? If so, what do you use to seal?
Yes. I HAVE to seal. Avocado oil. I would use olive oil if not for the smell. ETA: I mix olive oil with Aubrey's to kill the smell. I'm deciding if I still want to seal
Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points?
I think castor oil is a humectant. It doesn't always work for me...particularly in the winter. But, other times in the year, it's amazing!
Low dew point combos: Lots of conditioner (Aubrey- which is VERY thick), no humectants
Normal dew point combos: Lots of watery conditioner (diluted Aubrey), humectants
High dew point combos: Lots of watery conditioner (diluted Aubrey), minimal humectants

HG/Go-to Products:
Olive oil, avocado oil, castor oil, tea tree oil, Aubrey Honeysuckle Rose condish, VO5 moisture milks.
Name the methods, techniques, and tricks that work for your porous hair? Moisurize and seal, pre-wash DT/PT treatments. For every 3 DTs, I do 1 PT

Miscellaneous: My hair likes to dry in braids. No tangles and no extreme frizz. I need to add condish/oil to my hair when it's almost sopping wet (fresh out of shower) for best results.
My signature style: the "braid n' curl"
High porosity, normal elasticity, high density, thick strands, DRY (must moisturize/oil and DT a lot), tangles easily. Highly textured...curl softener+demi-perm color.
Straightened length: Waist (layers)
Textured length: (variable) full SL to BSL

Condish/Shampoo: VO5
Pre-poo: mild protein(VO5)+castor oil+tea tree
Steam treatments: 1-2x weekly
Daily routine and DT: Moisturize w/ Aubrey Honeysuckle Rose+Olive oil and seal w/ Avocado oil

Curl Pattern: 3c/3b.

Elasticity: normal
Characteristics: Mixture of stretched corkscrew and botticelli curls with medium amount of shrinkage

CG/ModCG/not CG: CG

Hard water or soft water: soft water

Average climate/dew points: Cold Winters, Hot Humid Summers. I don't check dew points. I have methods that works in all weather conditions.

Protein section:

Do you PT? If so how often?
How long? Yes, once every 2 weeks for 20 mins. I also do them every time I dye.
PT with heat or steam? Self heating cap
Favorite PTs: AOGPB, Nexxus, Homemade
Favorite products that contain protein? Tresemme Naturals
Proteins your hair likes? All
Proteins your hair dislikes? None that I know

Moisture section:

Do you DT? If so, how often?
How long? Yes, once a week for 20 minutes
DT with heat or steam? Self heating cap
Favorite DTs: Shea Moisture Masque and Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Conditioner with added oils.
Favorite products to moisturize your hair: Water, Tresemme Naturals, Shea Moisture products
Ingredient likes: natural oils, proteins, emollients, humectants except for honey and agave

Ingredient dislikes: mineral oil, petroleum, silicones (unless used occassionally and removed properly also my hair reacts fine to water soluble cones), honey, agave

Do you seal? If so, what do you use to seal? Yes, I seal with an oil mixture of organic castor, extra virgin olive, and extra virgin coconut.

Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points? No, I like humectants used in a controlled manner. I don't go overboard with them but I'm not afraid of them either. My hair hates honey and agave nectar so I avoid those. I think ultimately that's why the Kinky-Curly stuff just doesn't work well for me. I don't really pay attention to dew points. I know what they are and how to use them if needed though. But I've done just fine with totally ignoring them and focusing on using methods and products that work with my texture and porosity. If I know it will be a dry day..then I just bump up the moisture is all. Like in the Winter months, I keep my hair super moisturized.

Low dew point combos: N/A
Normal dew point combos: N/A
High dew point combos: N/A

HG/Go-to Products: Tresemme Naturals, Aubrey Organics, Castor, Olive, and Coconut oils (I mix all those oils together in one bottle), I just recently got deep into the Shea Moisture line but it's definitely a part of my routine now.. I really like the product line.

Name the methods, techniques, and tricks that work for your porous hair? Just sticking mainly with the CG method but I use shampoo 2x a week (sulfate free), I co-wash all the other days. My scalp likes to be cleaned with shampoo. Co-washing alone doesn't cut it for my scalp. As long as my hair is moisturized and sealed it turns out really well for me. Also not using a lot of a styler product. The less product I use the better my hair looks. So when I do use stylers I stick with 1 moisturizer and 1 gel for hold. That is it! I use just enough to lightly coat. The only product that I'm heavy with is conditioner and usually rinse it all out. Sometimes I leave a little in and slap some oil over it and then rinse it with cold water. This trick works good for me in the Winter cold months. I also do this if I'm not using any sort of styler afterward. I diffuse sometimes with no problems or adverse affects. I use low heat, high speed when diffusing. I air dry for the most part though.

With my porous hair sealing moisture in is key and having a balance of protein in my hair to strengthen it. Once I learned how to do that and do it well.. my hair problems virtually disappeared. The only times I've ever had issues is when I have veered from that method.

I dye my hair with Natural Instincts once a month. I try to just stick to the root area and I always do a protein treatment directly afterward.

What a great topic!

Curl Pattern: Kinky-wavy
Density: thin to medium
Elasticity: normal (I think)
Characteristics: dry; lots of shrinkage in the back; plagued by a lazy hair pilot

CG/ModCG/not CG: modified CG--I low-poo occasionally, plus when I get my hair trimmed, my stylists use non-water soluble cones, so I use coco-betaine to remove them
Hard water or soft water: I'm not sure; I was just trying to figure out yesterday!
Average climate/dew points: very humid summers; I spend a lot of time in NC in the winter, and it's still humid there

Protein section:
Do you PT? If so how often? Once a month only, because my hair is coarse
How long? 15 minutes at the most
PT with heat or steam? neither
Favorite PTs: Aubrey Organics Blue Green Algae Hair Rescue Conditioning Mask, once a month
Favorite products that contain protein? Conditioners, leave-ins, styling products, etc. I only use Aubrey's pre-shampoo protein treatment; otherwise, I avoid them like the sun!
Proteins your hair likes? I'm still trying to figure out the best
Proteins your hair dislikes? It seems like most, but I'm not sure.

Moisture section:
Do you DT? If so, how often? it depends on how lazy I am at the time; I shoot for at least once a week, but my hair is so dry, I could do more, and my hair would sigh with pleasure
How long? it depends; sometimes an hour; other times, I'll DT under a heating cap for an hour
DT with heat or steam? heat, but I want to try steam at home; my stylist uses steam, and it does seem to make a difference
Favorite DTs: Spiral Solutions Deeply Decadent Moisturizing Treatment (this is THE best for me) and Curl Junkie Curl Rehab
Favorite products to moisturize your hair: Water, olive oil, and shea or avocado butter to seal
Ingredient likes: oils, panthenol
Ingredient dislikes: too much glycerin, grapefruit and other citrus, salts, proteins, mineral oil, cones, too much aloe in a product (I use just enough in my homemade concoctions, or I get terrible build-up)
Do you seal? If so, what do you use to seal? shea butter, avocado butter, olive oil, and Jamaican black castor oil

Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points? I haven't quite learned what works for me in all dew points. Some products I use do contain panthenol and glycerin, but I have to be careful with the glycerin.

Low dew point combos: unsure
Normal dew point combos: unsure
High dew point combos: unsure

HG/Go-to Products: Aubrey Organics White Camellia (regular conditioner), Spiral Solutions' Deeply Decadent Moisturizing Treatment, Curl Junkie Curl Rehab, Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque (pre-poo treatment), shea butter and shea oil, BioInfusion Hydrating Balm Conditioner (to clump curls, although Suave Tropical Coconut clumps well, too, but I've never left it in my hair), extra virgin olive oil, avocado butter

Name the methods, techniques, and tricks that work for your porous hair? Spritz and condish, pre-wash treatments, sealing, etc. conditioning with a rich product and using an ayurvedic hair treatment, both at least once a week; wetting my hair (daily if possible) and using my own conditioning concoction before protective styling (this wet/moisture practice is necessary to keep the dryness at bay; there's a marked difference in my hair's moisture when I take the time for this); my edges are thin, sparse, and dry, so I have to wet, moisturize, and oil them daily (oil mixture for my edges: JBCO, tea tree, and neem oil mixture)

My hair is slightly coarse according to goosefoot prints. Over half of the hair she tested from my sample was coarse. My hair is high porosity except at the roots and my elasticity is low.

I have been trying to find products that work for me. Bought curl junkie hoping that would help, but all of the protein seemed to make my hair very dry and I lost most of my curl! I only have 2c curl as it is. I tried coconut oil prewash and that just made my hair limp and greasy.

So confused right now....at this point I think I need to focus on moisture.

protein is not good for coarse hair. you can use it in small amounts. try and see what your hair tolerates. curl junkie has portein-free products. i know curl rehab is one, i use it sometimes as a leave in.
