Default Usual products not working for me

I have very porous, very curly hair. (I guess if I was worried about typing, I'd say it was 3c/4a with some 4b is spots.) My hair will soak up all the moisture you can give it.
I've generally had great results with wash-n-gos until this week. Something has gone wrong and I just can't get my hair to feel soft and moisturized. It's feeling kind of steel-wooly and looks super dull.

Here's my normal routine:
Suave Naturals Waterfall-something co-wash/conditioner - I do a co-wash weekly, other times just enough to refresh
Kinky Curly Knot Today as a leave in
KCCC to style when I want ringlets or Curls Whipped Cream when I don't
I use shea butter as a sealant

Also, the KCCC isn't working at all like it usually does.

I appreciate any ideas as to what could be wrong. I'm happy to give more info if you need it.

Thanks

N

Do you w-n-g every day or twice a week? With very porous hair, it can easily get dry even with cowashing if it is done every couple of days. Water has a pH of 7 which opens the cuticles. And as you know, you want to keep them closed as much as possible. You may have depleted most of the moisture in your hair. Below is a routine you can try for a while; each person's hair is different so customize it for you.

1. Co-wash once every 7-10 days.

2. DC afterward with a "rich" conditioner. One I like is Jessicurl Weekly Deep Treatment or Curl Junkie Hibiscus and Banana DT.

3. Use a protective style such as twists or bun, if your hair is long enough. If your hair is a TWA, then use a rich emollient to keep it moisturized.

4. Use a moisturizing spritz twice a day and cover your hair at night with a satin/silk cap to keep in moisture.

I'm sure other curlies will chime in. HTH.

See, I think washing is fine. Especially cowashing. It's adding moisture that you need regularly. I tex-lax which is it's own set of issues and then I colored on top of that so it doubled my issues. If I go more than a couple of days w/o cowashing my hair is practically crying for moisture.

Porous curlies need a regular shots of protein. You didn't mention it, but do you do some kind of regular protein treatment?

I prefer to keep some kind of protein type product at the ready - protein-y leave in, a rinse-out conditioner that has some, or a deep treatment that is protein-filled, etc. I always want to have something on hand in case I run out.

Also, because you mentioned your hair looked dull - it could be buildup. You may just need to use a gentle shampoo to get you started back on a fresh slate. I know for me, shea butter builds up on my strands.

Thanks for the tips! I appreciate it.

I wash once a week but wet my hair everyday. My scalp is happier that way.

I think protein might be the thing I'm missing. I'm going to try adding that to my routine and see what happens. I did use a clarifying shampoo the other day and it seems to have helped a little.

Thanks again, I'll keep you posted.

Just to update those who helped me out. A protein treatment this weekend did the trick. Thanks again.
