My porous hair's HG

Believe it or not, sealing with mineral oil. In the winter I'll sometimes mix vo5's hairdressing with some MO, even.

I thought there was NO way this would work. I fully expected to have to wash it out the same day.

To my surprise, my hair was fabulous. Very little wilt or frizz through humid days outside. It seems to hold the moisture in, like any sealer oil does, but it lasts longer and can make it through the whole day and then some! I got 2nd day hair a lot more often after using it!

In the winter it seems to hold the moisture in, and perhaps give a bit of a protective barrier from the cold.

Another tip I've found for the winter is use a humidifier beside your bed in the winter (or if you deal with low dews) when you want 2nd day hair.

Your old thread in it is pretty informative and had some good links in it.

Lol! Thanks, RCC! I wanted to link to that but ran out of time early, and was coming back just now to do so! So thanks! :)

How do you wash mineral oil out?

Jas76 02-10-2013 08:40 PM

I don't do anything special. It low-poo's or co-washes out with no problem.

sinistral55 04-13-2013 08:51 PM

I know this thread is old as hell, but i have a couple of questions that hopefully won't languish unanswered for eternity....

--Can i seal with mineral oil if I use conditioner as my styler? Say, for instance, apply my leave in/an oil/mineral oil, in that order?

--I used straight baby oil on my natural hair many moons ago and it made my hair a horrible mess. But back then I was probably still relaxing, and I had used the baby oil as the sole styler. I do note that my hair seems to tolerate mineral oil and 'cones w/out problems.

Hmm, actually that was only one question. I'm about to read the other thread now....

Hello! :)

Ok, so for your first question - yes, I think you can use it if you do conditioner only. I would probably do that first mixed with a little condish, then add more condish over. Simply because I would be scrunching in the condish, and might scrunch out too much extra moisture.

We are talking just a few drops on very wet hair, so I don't think it should give you the same issues you had before with MO.

As with anything new, maybe try it when you have a free day, in case there are any issues and you have to start over! Hopefully it will work for you!!

sinistral55 04-14-2013 07:31 AM

Okay....just a little bit of the MO. I am definitely trying this! I'm hoping it will kill the end-of-the-day fuzz I get. I mean, the oils just don't DO it and then when I use too much, it just gets all greasy.

Also, many products just go hard/stiff/crispy on my hair. I think the MO could make a huge improvement in making my condish-as-styler (Cantu leave-in Shea Butter in the big jar, btw) go the distance without going frizzy.

I will let you know how it works...thanks!!

Jas, you need to update your signature, lol! MO isn't on there!

Jas76 04-18-2013 08:22 AM

OMG! Really??? Hahaha! Thanks! I'll do that! (99% of the time I'm on my phone using the app so I don't see it!)

Jas76 04-18-2013 08:44 AM

Oh geez. Well, I can't get to my sig from the app, and i can't get the page to load on my computer. So it seems my sig may stay as is. (And this is honestly why it hasn't even edited in forever.)

Will try a different browser, and if that doesn't work it's just staying as is forever!

chloe92us 04-18-2013 11:22 AM

Hi Jas, Your sig now shows "MO!" under oils, lol. :colors:

I tried MO the past 3 days and I've had a HUGE reduction in frizz! Although, I have also tried two new products (SS CEJ + FHG) all three days. I don't want to say anything prematurely, but I have never used products 3 days in a row. Same results all 3 days. Think I may have found my HGs!!!!!

Jas76 04-18-2013 01:34 PM

YAY!!! So glad you found a good combo!!

And yes - lol! I FINALLY got to edit my sig! It took a lot of work, a phone app, 4 attempts on my computer and 2 different web browsers. But I was committed. Lol!!

sinistral55 04-19-2013 09:41 PM

Yeah the MO really, really works. Of course I overlooked it about a zillion times in Walmart (since when did they change from clear to white opaque bottles?) and dropped the bottle in the bathroom (mineral oil is SO hard to clean up)...........but overall it is extremely effective.

I still need a better styler than the Cantu for humid days....but without too much hold. If I can find a styler that will hold up better in humidity, then use the MO to seal, I will be in hair heaven.

Thanks for this awesome tip. I also learned that a little bit goes a LOOOOING way.....

In the early 90s, I used to always put baby oil in my hair before my gel. Worked wonders then but then I became CG and tried everything else under the sun. I'm going to get some straight mineral oil and try this out to see if it still works some magic. I have some seriously porous hair and live in a subtropical climate where it has been raining frequently. I have been living with fairly consistent poof since being here. Glad to have read this today.

......my only drawback is that my hair takes longer to dry.

BUT, as a counterbalance, I can now use my diffuser with better results. Before, I was strictly air-dry-only because blowdrying--even with diffuser--disturbed things too much and caused frizz. But with the MO added, I get round bouncy curls when I blowdry. So it's still win-win.

I'm going to try the MO under Ecostyler today, to see what happens. I usually hate gels and prefer creams, but the MO just makes everything work better so I'ma try it. The MO makes my hair really soft, too.

OP, we seem to share almost identical hair properties!

Did the MO under the Ecostyler. Clearly the best thing to happen this past weekend :-)

I'm so glad this has helped you guys as much as me!!! It's definitely my #1 HG product!! Year round!!

I have high porous hair.

My hair always feels dry and brittle after I moisturize it and I don't know why. I've come to realize that my hair is naturally porous because when I was young my hair was normal, but now I when I wash my hair it finishes drying in like 3-5 hour.

When I apply moisturizers it dries out the next morning. What should I do?

Jas76 04-28-2013 08:23 PM

Try sealing with mineral oil! Use a moisturizing condish, a leave-in, and then a few drops of MO. Then scrunch out excess water and style as usual.
