Question about being highly porous

Like Tree8Likes

Hey guys. So yes I have a question about porosity. I got the hair analysis last month and it said that I was highly porous, which was a shock to me at the time because I thought that meant my hair was unhealthy. I was expecting medium porosity and couldn't believe my hair was highly porous since I hadn't colored it in ages and hadn't used sulfates in years. But then afterwards I thought about it and it made sense. My hair dries very very quickly. So much so that if I don't style it right away once I get out of the shower I sometimes have to rewet it. Also my hair seems to absorb everything, I mean absolutely everything I put into it so it's very thirsty. But recently I've come to the conclusion that my hair is healthy and just naturally highly porous because I have about two inches of roots grown in that are virgin and haven't been touched by heat. No blow dryers or flat irons. These roots are the healthiest part of my hair and yet they seem to dry the fastest. I know there is disagreement over whether or not hair can be healthy (read: undamaged) and yet naturally highly porous. I recently went back to livecurlylivefree.com and it says it can't, but I'm thinking I'm the exception to the rule. Does anybody else feel this way or noticed such things about their hair?

Your highly porous locks are lovely! My hair reacts to water similarly to your hair, and I've never colored it, and it hasn't been relaxed in over 15 years.

I think there may be more information concerning highly porous hair than what is typically known because I always wonder the following:

1. There is a white residue left behind by some products. This is after my hair has been clarified, conditioned (rinse-out), and only one styling (or leave-in) product used. Doesn't highly porous hair absorb everything?

2. My hair is virgin/healthy, and kept moisturized--yet highly porous...?

3. If hair tangles easily after being detangled, does that mean it's highly porous, or does it means that it's just fine hair (which also tangles easily)?

4. Does highly porous hair reflect a shine or a sheen? Dusalocks, your hair looks shiny. I would have thought more of low porosity.

I'm sure others will chime in....

Greatcurls, you bring up some interesting points. Just like me, your hair hasn't been relaxed or colored. I'm assuming you haven't even been using heat tools regularly like I was so your hair must be quite healthy and yet it's naturally dry! Looking at your signature it's obvious you treat your hair very nicely and know a thing or two about it since you've already established a winter regimen.

The part about residue is also curious. All of my products have played nicely so far and I haven't experienced buildup or residue, but part of me thinks it's just a matter of time. Or maybe it's the luck of the draw in choosing products that happen to not clash. Even on un-clarified hair. I actually waited a good two months after turning CG before I clarified and even then I didn't feel as though I needed to, I just kind of wanted to try it. But boy did my hair feel stripped afterwards. I babied it back within 2 days but it's left me thinking the next time I clarify I better really, really need to.

(Strange sidenote: I had to poo out this silicone serum they snuck into my hair at the salon last week and the straight up sulfate shampoo-Suave Naturals Coconut-did not dry my hair out as much as the sulfate free clarifying one- Trader Joes Tea Tree Tingle. I might use the sulfates next time.)

Oh, I'm not sure about shine and high porosity but you raise another good point there. If our hair is dry, then how can it be shiny? Part of me wants to believe it's my natural shine but part of me wonders if it's just all the amazing products I've been using. It's funny when I was using silicones my hair used to be rather dull. (Probably because I was using Wen which doesn't have sulfates to poo them out so I must've had a lot of buildup.) The moment I went CG it got very shiny. That's why I thought it was healthy. Anyways I do moisturize the hell out of it. And it is shiny no matter which product and combinations I use so long as they're CG.

Thank you so much for the compliment by the way! I'm surprised you can even see my hair at all in that teeny tiny screenshot. Once I'd uploaded the picture I was bummed because my hair seemed so dark you couldn't see the curls and my arms look ghastly white too for some reason. (This is on my screen.) The site wouldn't let me change though. Kept jamming. But at least it let me upload an avatar at all. I tried a month ago and no dice.

Okay I keep going off topic. Someone else with high porosity please do chime in so Greatcurls and I can compare notes with you! I've been curious about my porous hair for a few weeks now. I was thinking I could "repair" it to achieve medium porosity but I've since come to the conclusion that my hair will probably always be dry and in need of moisture. That's okay. I just want to know for sure.

P.S. My hair tangles pretty easily too. Especially the right side for some reason.

I'm naturally high porous, too!

I find my hair drinks oil, and can't get enough protein. In fact, the protein/moisture balance for me seems to be "get as much as possible of both".

I too have found that the OCCASIONAL gentle sulfate poo works well on me. I use it to clarify, and be sure to do a PT/DT afterwards. My hair is a LOT curlier and shinier after taking those steps.

I'm not sure if that (the sulfates being good when used on occasion) is connected to my porosity or not, but I guess it bares mentioning.

No issues with white residue, unless I mix a LI with a gel it doesn't like, or AVG (Which I don't use straight onto my hair anymore, bc my hair seems to only like it when it's in a product.)

Sealing (with MO) is a MUST for my hair!!!

What's AVG? Aloe vera gel? Sorry for being dense Jas. You're always clearing up acronyms for me. It's so good to know you're naturally porous too! That's 3 for 3 guys! You hear that? (Ra ra sis boom ba!) That's my hair's self esteem. It's going through the roof.

I'm quite porous. My hair is also coarse, and I cannot tolerate much protein. Only keratin, and only when the dew points in the 60'sF.

I seal over top of my leave-in. It helps a lot.

Oh yes, sorry! Aloe Vera Gel!

I see RCC says she's coarse and porous - I think that's somewhat rare. (RCC - is that naturally? Or damage based?). Or at least not as common as fine and porous. It seems coarse hair tends to not like protein, where fine does. At least as a general rule. My hair never met a protein it doesn't like, and it gobbles it right up!

And Dusa - your hair is lovely! Why is its self esteem so low??

It's both. I color my hair twice a year, but the roots are porous as well.

I heat dry about 4-6 times a year and heat straighten once a year.

I bought some lily of the valley aloe vera gel yesterday. It's a huge bottle for $7 at whole foods. I'm looking forward to mixing it with my FSG and experimenting.

Thanks for the hair compliment. Yes, its self esteem is not low anymore, I promise. Especially after this thread. It's just that after I got my hair analysis results and they shocked me, I was feeling guilty for straightening it for so long. (Especially because I didn't always use a heat protectant.) I thought I'd done some serious damage to make my porosity high in the first place. But now I realize you can be naturally porous and still have healthy hair. I also get the sense that a lot of coarse curlies have low porosity, not high. It's weird that my properties don't agree with one another. I guess that's why my hair seems okay with light proteins but not heavy ones.

It could be your water. I read somewhere that hard water can cause high porosity.
I'm not sure if that's true or not, but I can say we have hard water in our state, so maybe that is part of it!

Dusa - my hair likes AVG in the FSG. I actually put quite a bit in there. It's funny, bc plain AVG on my hair does NOT go well, but if I dilute it, or it's combined with something - it's great!

I looked into hard water when I first read the CG Handbook and realized pretty quickly I don't have it. The best indicator is whether or not you can get your soap to lather. Bad buildup (which I have yet to get) in the hair is also a good indicator of hard water. There was a water bottle test:

How to Determine if You Have Hard Water: 5 steps (with pictures)

There it is! Just in case it's to anyone's interest.

Jas, how much AVG to do mix with the FSG ratio wise? Should I just start out tossing a tsp into the container and giving it a swift stir?

As far as how much avg - I put a good amount, actually. Depends on the size batch I make, so I can't say for sure. Maybe 1/4-2/3cup in a large batch? I mix it in after it's been removed from the heat, of course.

I have 2b/2c hair. Very porous and medium and coarse density. It's a frustrating combo. I was CG for a year before figuring out my hair liked protein and oil. I still work on my hair but figuring out what it likes and doesn't like has been hard. I do a protein treatment very other week. I would do it more but don't have the time. Jojoba oil has been amazing on my hair. it never occurred to me to put oil on wet hair (I figured oil and water didn't mix) but it has made my hair so shiny and soft. I'm naturally porous. Dye my hair 1-2 x per year.

I think most curly hair or hair in general likes oil. (Maybe straight haired girls already produce enough sebum but you know what I mean.) It's just that some curlies can't wear it in their hair when they style because it weighs it down. I also love jojoba oil for sealing. And I'm trying out grapeseed oil. Last night I did a deep treatment that was one part grapeseed to one part coconut oil to one part EVOO to one part honey. Like you I put it in wet clean hair. Then I left it in all night and rinsed this morning. Super silky extra shiny hair. Shame I'm going to go the gym now and frizz this baby up. But when I get home wash again and then style it.

I have pretty porous hair as well. It's coarse and there's a lot of it. 2b/c right now. My hair does not like protein at all, but loves oil (except olive). I rarely heat style, maybe once a year. I've hennaed twice, once a full henna in 2008, the other a gloss last year. My water is hard and highly chlorinated.

I just discovered that my shampoo bar has SLS, so I'm going to just rely on my Deva Low-Poo for a while and see if that helps. I don't wet or wash my hair very often, so I'm going to try wetting and conditioning more often to see if that helps it get the moisture it wants. To me, it looks obviously dry and it has way too many split ends.

I never get split ends even. I honestly don't actually know what one looks like but I can sort of picture it. If your water is hard what do you do to compensate? Lemon rinses? So far I wash every other day. I can stretch my hair out longer if I were to skip my cardio but then my hair will get rather dry too. It needs a conditioner fix and good detangle every other day.

Oops I meant coarse texture. I have medium density. I didn't start using jojoba oil until last month and it has made my hair so much better. There's shine now!
For protein, I enjoy spiral solutions ( they only have one but I forgot the name of it), and CJ curl fx. I also tried CJ repair me a few times but left my hair dry. I should probably follow that one with a deep conditioner.

Definitely follow Repairme with a deep conditioner. Otherwise, the protein will leave your hair like straw - but it is good before a DT.
