I Am Back! with BEFORE & AFTER PICS

Hmmm...I'll have to think about it. Oil has always just been so problematic for me. The problems you describe with oil are the complete opposite of my problems. I "wish" it would weigh down my hair and make it slick and oily looking. That's what happens when you don't have super porous hair like I do. My hair reacts to oil in a very unusual way and the effects last through a couple of washings, so I'm really apprehensive about trying it.

Speaking of oil, I bought some EverPure Moisturizing conditioner today, and it has two different oils in it, so I'm concerned about this. I've also decided to cut out cones because HEHH is so full of them, it makes my hair slick and flat over time. Too bad, because I have about 10 bottles of HEHH and 25 bottles of V05 Extra Body. I also see that the EverPure has cones in it. I must have stood in the shampoo aisle at Walmart for 30 mins--I even went back 3 times because I couldn't make up my mind. They probably thought I was trying to build up the nerve to shoplift or something. I really wish Suave didn't have potassium chloride in it because I really like that it has no cones, no oil, and no protein. I like that it left my hair full and curly and smelling great. Ugh...I wonder if I can find a chemist who can tell me if potassium chloride is detrimental to BKT like sodium chloride.

I thought I was finished with all of this product searching!

Merri, to whom is your post directed? If you're asking me, some of this information is contained in my signature below.

I use QOD Max and QOD Gold more recently. Yes, I can wear my hair straight if I choose, but I don't like my hair straight. I straighten it just using my hands and my blowdryer in about 10 minutes. BKT has profoundly improved the quality of my life. I wish I had had this 30 years ago.

I have a loong, detailed thread somewhere about my journey. You can search for it using the words "QOD Max Journey." Something like that.

AphroDiva--I used some keratin today as a leave-in with my gel and I love it! My hair is bouncy and thick, with defined curls. What a great way to use up more of it! Thanks for the tip!

AphroDiva, I need your help! I can't remember which shampoo and conditioner you use. I have been experiencing excessive hair shedding lately and so has my boyfriend. He says it started when he began using one of my V05 reject conditioners and stopped when he stopped using it. I have been using V05 Extra Body for cowashing since Nov. 2009 without problem. I've been noticing excessive hair loss for about a month now. My scalp is itchier than usual too. I doubt it's the V05, but I want to try something different just in case. I don't think cowashing gets my scalp clean enough--it's really flaky. I'm wondering if I'm not getting enough iron since cutting waaaay down on my meat intake since April. I'm also concerned that the formaldehyde in the BKT is being absorbed and is damaging the hair follicles, so I'm really nervous right now. I think I'm going to rub some on my arm in the same spot repeatedly and see if anything happens to the hair there.

It's hard for me to know if I'm shedding an abnormal amount of hair because of my history of severe breakage from age 11 to age 41--so there was always broken hair everywhere. Then, for the last 3 years, my hair was braided up in a protective style and I wore hair weaves while my hair grew. So, I don't really know what "normal" hair shedding looks like. I know that we normally shed anywhere from 50 - 150 hairs per day, and since I only wash my hair every other day and my hair is pretty long--a few inches past my bra strap--I would expect to see quite a bit of hair loss in the shower, but it seems to be more in the last month. My shower drain is full of hair, and my son and bf gasped when I showed them how much hair I combed out today.

Have you noticed a problem with shedding hair? And, which shampoo and conditioner do you use?

if you are DIY then I highly doubt you'll be able to stay away from your scalp.
Yeah, I do get some on my scalp from time to time...but I have not suffer from any hair loss or damage. All opposite, when I do a treatment, after my second wash my hair gets so much body. And I am noticing more hair grow than before. But we all react different.
Hey, AD!!

Yes, hairguru, if you DIY, you can't help but get it on the scalp. I didn't even bother trying not to get it on my scalp before; now I'm being more careful, but it's impossible to avoid it completely. The hair shedding has diminished some, and there hasn't been any noticeable thinning of my hair, so I guess it's just normal. I'm back to using my V05 for cowashing, also, so that wasn't the problem. I don't BKT my hair or roots as often anymore. In fact, I like my roots curly because it gives me much-needed volume there. I just framed my face with BKT the other day just so the root hair around my face isn't so unpredictable and uncontrollable. Still lovin' life with my hair.

It actually has nice slip, too, if you want to use it as a detangling rinse-out. AND I can usually find it on sale at CVS every few weeks for only $.77/bottle! I found some online about a year ago and bought 4 cases of it, so I have about 30 bottles now cuz I stock up on it whenever it goes on sale at CVS. (hoarder!)

I am still loving EverPure Moisture Conditioner as my rinse-out. LOVE the way it smells.

Should I use higher heat on the flat iron or is the humidity inevitable?

I had to use the entire 4 oz sample bottle to cover my entire head. If I like the result after I wash it out, I will order the big bottle next time.

I also had a question about ingredients. I use African Black Soap Deep Cleansing Shampoo. The ingredients are: Deionized Water, Decyl Glucoside (Sugar Beets),
African Black Soap, Salicylic Acid, Salix Alba (Willow)
Bark Extract, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Seed Oil,
Charcoal Powder, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree)
Leaf Oil, Simmondsia chinensis seed (Jojoba) Oil,
Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Oil*, Aloe Vera Leaf
Juice, Vitamin E, Rosemary Extract, Plantain Extract,
Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower (and)
Lonicera Japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle) Flower
Extract. *Denotes CerQfied Organic Ingredient.
Is there anything in this list that would affect the BKT?

Also, I'm wondering about the nature of the samples that everyone is buying. If it doesn't come from a factory-sealed bottle or directly from the manufacturer, I don't trust it.

If your curls are tight, you will most likely have to do multiple applications to combat the humidity. Even if your curl pattern isn't that tight, you may still have to do 2 or more in rapid succession in order to defeat the effects of the humidity. I don't think my own hair would stay straight and frizz-free in a constantly humid environment, but I don't get any frizz in the humidity of my bathroom during or after a shower.

I don't see anything in those ingredients that should be of concern, but I'm no chemist. Just stay away from anything containing the word "sodium" or "potassium" especially sodium or potassium chloride--they are chemically very similar. I'm probably overly cautious about all sodiums and potassiums, but, hey, I've gone for 9 months without having to do a full-head application.

The humidity is 97% Maybe rainy days weren't the best choice for doing this. I'm going to wash my hair now. I bought EverPure shampoo, but I see it has a lot of sodium ingredients in it. My hair type is 4a. I just lightened the ends with a highlighting kit.
