Ladies who do ur own BKT

I've done two of my own BKT's so far and am really happy with the results but what degree do you put your flat iron on? I have very thick curly hair but sometimes I feel like 450 is too high..after the last BKT i experienced some breakage..does anyone have advice for a heat setting? Also do you guys brush your hair at all during the 3-4day waiting period? TIA

I have super baby fine hair, and I hate using the flat iron at all, but I roll the dial all the way to 450˚ anyway. It's difficult for me to know where my breakage comes from because I had highlights done twice a year ago, which is very, very damaging to hair as fine as mine. In looking at my hair now, I notice that the last 4-6 inches of the ends seem thin and straggly, and they really shouldn't because I had the straggly ends cut off back in Nov. '09. This tells me there has been some breakage since, and I'd noticed excessive shedding 4-5 months ago, which has since stopped. I never brush my hair, ever. I treat my hair like spun glass because it is soooooo fragile.

Some believe that the BKT will not take if you don't use 450˚ heat. I'm not sure enough to comment. Again, I think it might be contingent upon your hair strand condition and thickness. Thinner, more damaged hair likely wouldn't need heat that high, though I don't know if 450˚ is the "magic number" that activates the chemical process.
