My experience with keratin treatments

Hi Honeycurls!

Ive been searching for an at home keratin treatment. ive read your posts and you seem to be the only one who really seems to know what theyre talking about lol. im a 3b hair type and live in south florida with sooo much humidity. ive read up on keratin and want to know your opinion for doing one at home. ive read that you recommend qod for hair types like mine. im scared b/c ive had a perm and all my hair fell out....so naturally im apprehensive about ANY hair treatment. i think keratin is the answer to some of my problems but would like some one on one help with someone who knows what she is talking about. qod is a bit expensive for me, is there any other that you have heard about that might be a bit less expensive and effective as well? and are there any tips that you might offer for a first timer? i appreciate any help you can give...ive done A LOT of research, but can recognize knowledge when i see it. i registered for this site just to speak with you lol! hope to hear from you soon oh yeah, your private messages are full, please delete some so i can talk to you, hope im not overstepping

oh yes! if you want to sell some qod online, i want to buy it, if you think it would be effective i know its not the "good" one, but if you think its good, id love to buy it.
Hi

I know this is an old thread but I have a quick question? there is some vendor on amazon selling 2oz sizes of kerapremium for cheap, so I think I want to try doing a root touch up myself. I think if I'm doing just roots I may even be able to get a few uses out of the bottle.

Anyway my question is I know you have to use a special shampoo beforehand, so if I am doing only the roots do I only put the special shampoo on the roots so I don't remove the Keratin from the rest of my hair or is it safe to "special shampoo" the whole head. Any help would b appreciated.
I never write on these things but I wanted to thank Cupcake for her informative, honest and helpful post. Its one of the first times that i have read about keratin permanently straightening hair as that has been my experience. This was a shock since everywhere I read before trying keratin said that it was not a permanent straightner and that it needed to be reapplied all over the hair, not just the roots. Thank you, thank you.

I did have a question: if you are just reapplying the roots, do you applying conditioner to the ends? how do you work that?
I am probably going to ask the most stupid question ever, but still...
Here I go..
What is the difference between a keratin treatment and keratin in conditioners? (except for the longtime effect).

I was planning to do my first productPT tomorrow, and the conditioner I bought for it yesterday has as as 5th and 6th element "cocodimonium hydroxypropyl hydrolyzed keratin" and "hydrolyzed keratin"
Now I am reading about "keratin treatment" for the first time and it seems that this keratin treatment is loosening your curls. Is this conditioner going to loosen my curls as well? (I don't want that to happen)
My hair has been relaxed pretty mich all my lofe til i was about 13. I really havnt seen my natural hair n it was regular for me. My mom always took me to get it and from my view as a child i couldnt tell what it was doing. I thought it just made my hair thinner so therefore it would be easier to manage. In 7th grade i didnt do it for a while and i started to see my natural hair growing out. With the relaxers and not knowing what they dis to my hair i never knew i had such healthy beautiful curls like other latina girls did. I started to grow it out and told my mom i didnt want anymore relaxers because i REALLY wanted my own hair back. I grew back about 4 inches and more in the back (my hair grows faster in the back) and i was really excited about cutting morw of the relaxed hair off each time i went to go get a trim. One day i decided to get my hair cut in layers so therefore i would be cutting more hair off, and i did. During this visit to the salon, i got the keratin treatment. They put it in, straightened my hair and told me to keep it in for 5 days and to not put any heat on it. I did that and went back so they could wash it out. I did and they straightened it again after they washed it. A couple days later i decided to wash my hair becauae i didnt want to have it straight anymore so i did and i was devistated. My hair was completely straight even after i washed it !! The relaxed part was straight from the beginning but the 4 inches of growth i was so happy to have was gone. Having my hair back was so important to me and now i have to start all over!!! If u only understood how this effected me emotionally i used to hate my hair because it was difficult to manage but after growing it i realized that it was the relaxer that did that so to have something way better that was natural and mine was amazing. But now its gone. I dont want to do any treatment whatsoever in my hair i just want to takw care of it and grow it out naturally without chemicals or all that crap. I just want my hair back.
I had the SimplySmooth Keratin treatment done 2 weeks ago and it was a total waste of a lot of money ! It did nothing to relax or defrizz my hair. I now have dry but still frizzy/curly hair. Never
again !
Keratin ruined my hair in 2010. I had to do a big chop when it started growing out. I had the Keratin Express. It grew out kinky curly and the ends never curled back up. Looking back, I never should have done this. My curls were beautiful. 4 years later, they are finally getting back there. I have attached pics:

Currently happy with the LOC method!
Well honestly idk what to tell but from my experience with the keratin treatment I've had nothing but good results. I'm puertorican and dominican with kinky curls. I'm17 now and my mother had been perming my hair since I was two. But in november she decided to di the keratin treatment. She did my hair and it turned out great abd shes not even a hairstylist. Anyways I've only done it once and it has still lasted because I got the ion smooth solution shampoo that is specifically for replenishing the keratin. I was was my hair oncea weeek sometimes I air dry it but most of the time I put a combed top on my blowdryer and dry and disentangle it at the same time. It doesn't matter what process I do just as long as I flat iron my curly roots to the tip it comes out great. It looks like if Ihad curly hair and straightened it which is kinda true. As long as I use that shampoo my keratin will remain and look like the first time I got it everytime. As for my curls I get curly roots bc of new growth but the rest of it mostly permed hair comes out str8. I do agree that keratin does not fix damages but for me personally it helps avoid damage. I'mlazy abd Idont like doing my hair especially when my roots were kinky curly. I went from hard to manage hair to managable hair.

What brand keratin treatment did you use gege?
Curllyky, you are HIGHLY MISINFORMED if you think your hair is 4a on any level. You are not even a 3c Your hair is maybe a tight 3b.
THIS is someone with 4a hair

4a is like a slightly enlarged spring in an ink pen.3c is about like a pencil .YOUR hair is about like tightly wrapped around a magic marker.

The first post in the thread states 3b clearly.
Hi there, I have naturally curly fine, thin hair. I am considering the new Goldwell Kerasilk treatment. I don't want to loose my curl pattern as I am completely natural at this point. Does anyone have any advice or has anyone ever tried this. Not to be confused by the old Keratin treatment. The kerasilk treatment is tailored to each individual.

I had a Keratin Treatment a month ago and it was the best deal for my hair because it went out to look successfully. My hair became shiny and smooth. It actually treated its dryness and brittleness.
Hi Zalim, the problem was that you did not need the Resistant formula. That is for people like with 4c very coily hair. Resistant formulas are not necessary for 3b hair. If you used the mild or normal your curls would have come back like the first time. Also, if you want them to come back, wait a while before you apply the next treatment. So in the future, just do a mild keratin treatment. I know it seems like you need a super in your opinion, but in the grand scope of things your hair is not really resistant.
What you can do now, is use the milder keratin treatment only on your curly hair at the roots. Apply the solution only to the roots and flat iron only the roots. It will make the 2 textures blend much better
Hope that helps.
My Routine:
Coconut oil drench the night before I co-wash
then cowash and deep condition each time w/ Keracare Humecto, Joico Moisture Recovery and/or ApHogee 2min
then usually airdry
Grapeseed oil nightly

(no gel, mouse, or hair spray. My delicate, fine hair will tear if I even try to run my fingers through it with any of those. )
My go to leave ins are now: my regular conditioners listed above, gs oil, or PW77

I too had a lovely experience with Keratin my first two times, then decided to give my hair a rest after all the breakage I experienced throughout the treatment period. Throughout the time I let it grow out I of course experienced the ultra curly roots, and the ultra straight ends… Not pretty not fun! But once I saw how mistreated my hair was I decided I definitely need to let the Keratin grow out completely and sacrificed the time by doing careful 'healthy' blow drying or putting it in ponytails. As you can imagine, this was a vicious circle of damage, as careful as I was trying to be.
The keratin has now almost completely grown out and what is now driving me crazy is that I do find that my curls are much tighter than they used to be, my hair is dryer than any conditioner or treatment can ever fix and a year after keratin I'm more upset about it than ever!!
Even at my worst times before keratin; no conditioner or gel or treatment, my curly hair was tangly or annoying but it was healthy!! Keratin was fun and beautiful, but I will never do it again. Ever. I would caution everyone to think twice, Unless you have ultra healthy, thick hair and you trust that you can do it once or do it forever... Dreading the thought.
The other frustrating thing is that no one on the Internet anywhere talks about the effects to hair after keratin wears/grows out.
I have now joined the curly girl revolution!!
Hope this helps someone out there...
