Are my ideas about locs right?
As a little backstory on me, I have 3c/4a, racially mixed hair and have been transitioning since January. I am about as inept as one can get with hair. What worked for most of this past year was doing twist outs. But with all my new growth, it now seems permanently poofy at the top. I have frizzy hairs that won't stick down no matter what kind of gel I use, so even when I pull my hair into a bun the hair still looks poofy and bedraggled with all the strays up front.
I'm trying to figure out what to do with my hair, and locs look like they may be the solution.
One of my nephews and some cousins have locs and what I notice is they do take work, if you want them to look reasonably neat, to smell agreeable and if you want to prevent mold from moisture getting trapped from within the hair (like from water trapped in the locs from swimming or even a basic hair rinse). The amount of twisting that needs to be done each day (for at least the first few months) is time consuming, depending on the number of locs you have.
I hope some people with more knowledge about this help you out, and if I said anything wrong, will set me straight.
I have been loc'd for 18 months now and though I dont know all i do know quite a bit. I started my dreads with braids and use the latch hook to retighten every 8 weeks. The rate at which your hair grows out determines how often you retighten. I shampoo about once a week with castile soap. The main thing is to avoid product that are thick and waxy which can cause build up. My hair usually dries in 2-3 hours. That is only because i dont have build up. I like using the latching method because i dont have to worry about my hair loosening or my roots being puffy when my hair gets wet.
If you have any other questions just let me know. I will be happy to answer them.
