Question Fact vs. Feel

When I first came to this website I assumed my hair was high porosity because I've damaged it so much with heat styling. But I'm starting to have serious doubts!

FACT:
My hair SEEMS to have many low porosity attributes (taking a while to get wet, products resisting absorption, a 4 hour or longer drying time).

FEEL:
Whenever I try the strand test it FEELS like the normal porosity description....

As you can tell, I'm totally confused. Should I go with fact or feel?

  • Leave-In: Suave Naturals Coconut
  • Scrunch in a dab of olive oil
  • Gel: Herbal Essence Set Me Up
  • Plop for 45 min. to an hour
  • Clip and air dry
  • When nearly dry, pineapple for a few minutes, then SOTC

Have you done the water test where you place a strand of dry, clean, and product free hair in a glass of water?

If the hair sinks within 2 min., your hair is high porosity.
If half the hair strand remains a top the water, and half sinks, your hair is normal porosity.
If your hair floats a top of the water longer than 2 minutes, your hair is low porosity.

Some of us with low porosity hair can float a strand of hair a top of water for days--lols.

Good question! My hair has all of the attributes of low porosity except for drying time. My hair dries quickly if I don't use a lot of gel. I wake up at 5:30 am, co-wash or spritz my hair (if doing 2nd or 3rd day hair) and my hair is 85%-95% dry when I leave the house at 7:00.

When I do the "floating test", my hair floats forever.

As a fellow ninja, I'd like to be able to help you, but porosity and its relevance defeat me, much like an invisible enemy in the dead of night.

I was SURE my hair was high porosity because the feel of it seemed like it (by descriptions I had read here, on NC). But, I had it analyzed by Live Curly Live Free and they told me what my actual properties are. Even though it feels like I have high porosity, I'm low porosity. So, I no longer believe the going by feel method.

Here's the deal with LCLF:

THE CURLGENIE© PREMIUM PROFILE
Understanding your own unique and particular hair characteristics is key to choosing the right products for your hair. If you are making product decisions based on incorrect information about the actual properties of your hair, you are unlikely to experience the best results from your curly hair care maintenance routine and may, in fact, be contributing to any issues you are experiencing.

We have received hundreds of emails from around the globe from women who are unsure about determining their hair properties, so Curl Wizard is pleased to offer a hair analysis service to make that determination for you.

In your CurlGenie© Premium Profile, which includes our hair analysis service, you will receive everything included in the CurlGenie© Basic Profile with the addition of:
  • A personal hair analysis that will identify your hair texture, porosity and elasticity.
When you order the hair analysis, you will receive a download link to specific instructions on how to gather and mail an appropriate hair sample (don’t worry, you won’t have to cut off any chunks!). Please allow 3-4 weeks from the time we receive your hair sample for a response.

By clicking on the "Add to Cart" button to order the Curl Wizard CurlGenie© Premium Profile, you certify that you are at least 18 years of age and that you have read, understood and agree to all site disclaimers.

CURLGENIE© PREMIUM PROFILE PRICE: $19.95
SOURCE: Curl Wizard - CurlGenie Profiles

The plain hair analysis (minus the product suggestions - which I found to be of great importance and value) is $12.99 and can be found here: Live Curly Live Free - Hair Analysis

IMHO, for the $7 difference, it's worth it to have the whole shebang done.

Thanks for all the input you guys!
Y'all have helped soooo much! I've never heard of the floating test! I'm planning to do it later tonight....

And RacerWife, I've actually thought of doing the CurlGenie thing! I saw posts about it in the other forums and it seems really neat! I'll have to check into it some more. Question: Did you try the "floating test" before having the hair analysis? If so, what were your results?

Thanks again, and I'll post the results of the floating test later on! XD

I did this, too, and it confirmed what I thought, that my hair is low porosity.

I didn't do the floating test. I was totally confused because my hair "felt" like it was porous, but I had all the other attributes of low porosity (long drying time, water resistant, etc.). So, rather than make myself crazy with my own tests, I just went for the analysis.

Turns out I'm (drum roll, please!)......

LOW POROSITY!!

According to the cup of water that my hair floated in overnight, at least! Thanks for the help my curly haired comrades! I guess I do belong on this board!
Oh, and it turns out I can't do the CurlGenie test- I won't be 18 for over a month.
