Increasing Absorption?

okay, so my hair has low porosity, as I recently discovered. I did the water test and forgot about it, and when I came back half an hour later, my hair was still floating without a care. I also tried the other test where you rub your fingers up the strand and my hair squeaked . . So I'm sure its low porosity.

Anyway, after discovering it, and taking a better look in the mirror while conditioning my hair, I realized that most, if not all the problems I've encountered in my hair journey are due to low porosity. I saw that the conditioner, and also my styling products just sit on top of my hair, just like the water. After rinsing it out, my hair does not feel any softer or more moisturized, just feels like I wet it.

I know heat damage increases porosity, of course that's not what I want though, but is there any way (other than steaming, I cant do that now) to open up the cuticle?

Or is there any conditioners or ingredients I should look out for that really soak into the hair shaft?

i heard that rinsing hair with baking soda helps hair to absorb color dye, so would it help for conditioner?

I do use baking soda. But, usually I use it with my conditioner before I plan on doing a protein treatment. If I want to deep condition, I use a bonnet that attaches to my blowdryer and give myself a heated conditioning treatment that way. Both things seem to help my hair. I know you might not want to use heat. But, that seems to be what works when I want a DC treatment.

Shoot - I should have also said that I also do an ACV rinse after I do my PT or DC to seal the cuticle back up, so I don't frizz.

Why do you think you need to modify the external structure of your hair? If it ain't broke, why try to fix it? For you, nature meant for your hair's outer surface to be tight and that low porosity also helps prevent loss of protein and moisture.

Hair is just fiber. If you add emollients and conditioners, they can soften, they can fill up little gaps in the cuticle if there is damage to add shine. Protein and conditioning agents can and do bond to the outside of the hair and to any broken places via electrostatic charges, even with low-porosity hair.

Only exposure to a stronger base like sodium hydroxide or bleach will open your cuticle and that would cause severe damage. Baking soda is not "strong" enough for that, even if you use a lot and get the pH quite high. I've tried all this and photographed some of it with a microscope. It often changes the feel of the hair because of hard water/ buildup, removal of product residue.

Low porosity hair sometimes responds well to humectants and protein, perhaps more so than emollients.

I have been using very strong rosemary and sage and nettle (sometimes horsetail too) "tea" as a rinse for my itchy scalp and wow, does that soften my hair and make it shine, shine, shine. More than any conditioner. No help detangling, though.
I have low porosity hair (most of it) and all I ask of a RO conditioner is to help with detangling. I use protein and humectants to moisturize (attract and retain water).

I also have low elasticity and need extra protein to combat it. In order to get the most out of my protein treatments, I have to open up the cuticle, get the product in there, and then close it back up again. It works fabulously.

i see. since i was having trouble keeping my hair moisturized, i only wanted something mild like i had heard baking soda was, to temporarily open the cuticle so that i could get some moisture into my strands.

my hair does really like protein, but i don't want to overuse it and end with hard hair (which has happened to me before). thanks for the rec! i will look into those herbs
