Fine-texture, low porosity & protein!

Hi all! I have a question for those of you with fine, low porosity hair: where does protein fit into your regimen?

Most of my hair is very fine and very low porosity, and while it needs a lot of moisture, it also tends to look a little deflated if I use too much at once or use the wrong kind, like most finer curlies. However, lately whenever I use products with protein in them (specifically the CJ BC strengthening conditioner, so maybe it's a keratin issue) my hair will curl back up a lot in front and on the sides but the back will get stiff and straight-looking. It also feels drier overall, so I end up overcompensating on the moisture to try to revive it, yadda yadda yadda. It's an annoying, self-perpetuating cycle.

I saw a curlychemist article that mentioned protein buildup being a problem for finer-haired LP people, but is that necessarily the case? I know some of you ladies PT and use protein-y products, so I guess what I'm wondering is whether the protein-moisture balance is different for us than for other fine or low-porosity curlies or if it's a completely individual thing. Also, for those of you who do use protein, which products do you like and how do you use them? Please advise!

I do at least one PT a week. Either use CJ Repair Me or SS Protein Repair for my first PT of the week (neither of which requires a DT for me.) If I do a second PT, I use Elucence Moisture Repair or last week did IAgirl's treatment with gelatin. I also use a lot of products with protein on a daily basis. Frequently use the SS protein spray and lots of products with protein. My hair never met a protein it didn't like and I have yet to overload on protein. It's possible your crown/canopy didn't like the particular protein, as you mentioned, or didn't need it. You could try using less back there or switch to a different conditioner with protein???

The caveat to this is that the products I generally use are VERY rich. I use them in minute amounts because I don't have a lot of hair. I wet, rinse out and style every day, rotating products. In the winter, I use a leave in AND curl enhancer followed by a jelly product (no polyquats for me.) When the dewpoints get really high, it's a leave in OR curl enhancer followed by the jelly product.

Thanks Kathy, that's really helpful. Yeah, I'm thinking keratin is a bust for me, since I'm using the Daily Fix with no obvious issues and haven't noticed a protein sensitivity in the past. I've got some Oyin Honey Hemp (silk protein) on my bathroom counter waiting to be tested, so we'll see how it goes - maybe I just need to stick to the plant- and bug-derived stuff.

I'm really really curious about your regimen, actually! Normally I have issues with richer products, but our hair properties are very similar, so, hmmmmm. I may have to order some more samples from you soon! (Wait, did I just guano my own thread? LOL!)

Oh, nothing specific - sorry, I should've been clearer. I think I get what you're doing with your products; I'm just curious about what my hair would do if I tried something similar, since it seems to be preferring the few richer products I have in my (admittedly small!) arsenal right now. Of course, that could all change tomorrow, but you know! Just when you think you have everything figured out...

Protein fits into my weekly routine on a daily basis. Lately and for the first time, however, my hair has become kinda straw-like and knotty, and I'm losing A LOT of it in the shower everyday. Not sure it's because of all the protein I use because my curls are still 'popping' up nicely when I use protein.

My protein products are as follows: I use a shampoo with protein and keratin, most of my COs have proteins, I use Generic Joico K-Pak 1x a week or so, and I use Abba leave-in, which contains coconut oil (it isn't a protein, but it helps hold in proteins). I freshen my curls with water and Beyond the Zone Noodle Head spray, which has proteins. My gel (HESMU) probably has protein in it too.

AKA hard to work with hair!
