Questioning my porosity

Like Tree14Likes

LCLF said my hair was low porosity. Previous to that analysis I thought I had high porosity. Mainly due to the fact that it takes no time at all for it to dry without product.

I've been reading up a lot trying to figure this low porosity thing out, and everything I've found it's like it doesn't apply to my hair? Sources say to not use protein, because it doesn't need it, and to use deep conditioning treatments once a week. Every time I try to do deep conditioning (I do it like once in 2 months, so it's not like I do it regularly), with or without heat, my hair feels REALLY great while it's wet, but then when I go to scrunch it's all mushy, then go to dry it and I have virtually no curl. My product absorbs well also. And I seem to benefit from a lot of protein, even though my hair is not fine (I have medium). I can use protein like I eat breakfast lunch and dinner and my hair is great.

This has been my frustration trying to figure out what to do with my hair since I got these results back (I think it was in October?) I plan to do the goosefootprints one soon.. just don't know how I'm going to get 50 hair and keep them all the same direction.

But does anybody else's low porosity hair act like this? The only thing consistent is that I can't use a ton of product on my head. I don't know if it's more of a preference than a need though. I know not all of these "rules" probably apply to all hair, but none of this makes sense to me.

I have heard some get different results from LCLF and a microscope hair analysis (Komaza Care/ Goosefootprints). Hair behaviour in different conditions and with different products absolutely is relevant. As far as I can tell from a previous thread all LCLF is a manual assessment: someone even said the hair on their head was tested in the salon.

I don't believe in obsessively scheduling treatments, dead hair doesn't know its been precisely seven days since we last deep conditioned. Why not six days or eight days? Why not schedule by number of co-washes/ quick wettings/ shampoos? Do consider that what people umbrella label 'deep conditioning' encompasses an enormous range of different products/ ingredients/ techniques/ timing with very different end results.

AFAIK use of hydrolysed protein is more related to fineness/ coarseness and weather/ dew points than porosity, tho of course damage (which affects porosity) is relevant.

To get hair for Goosefootprints Webdy recommends trimming some from a hidden spot. Or you can collect clean shed plughole hair and manually sort them using the root bulb as a guide. That sorting is what Komaza Care does for you, they just charge more for their time input.

Thanks for the response! I ordered the GoosefootPrints analysis yesterday and cut my hairs as close to the root as I could. I snipped some extras in some spots though, oops. I guess I should have gotten some help, but it's done. I'm very curious to see what she comes back with. I don't necessarily trust the results that I got from LCLF. I've had problems since I switched up my routine from what I was doing before I got that done. Looking forward to a more in-depth type of help. I really loved the questionnaire she provides for you too.

I don't schedule treatments either. I hadn't deep conditioned for a couple of months and my hair was feeling dry. It just gets so limp and blah any time I do it, whether it be a week apart or 3 months apart. I guess I just don't need it.

Wendy is really knowledgeable and helpful, I have the most respect for her. She doesn't post here on NC much but is a regular on the Wavy Hair Community and of course there is her Sciencey Hairblog

Hope the analysis helps with the frustration, my hair is driving me almost to scissors the last few months! I think I did some serious damage last summer with magnesium sulphate.

That's what I hear, she has excellent information on her blog. I hear you.. either want to cut my hair off or straighten it. Oh, hair, why must you be so difficult.

I plan on getting a Goosefootprints analysis too but getting the 50 hairs confuses me too. If I wasn't able to figure out the root of my hair would that mess up my analysis? And sometimes when i detangle i don't see a white bulb on either end of my strand but its too long to be breakage, what is it?

Breakage can be any length, depends at what point the weakness or stress occurred. Maybe you need to be gentler and more patient detangling or use a different tool. Or maybe you just have a lot of kinky hairs with thinner weaker spots (see Natural Haven blog).

You might be best to ask Wendy these questions. But basically my understanding is she can't be spending ages sorting tangled hair balls for the low price she charges.

If you have some hairs that you don't understand you might bag them separately and ask her to look at the ends for signs of breakage.

I'm starting to question my porosity as well. I thought I had medium porosity but am now starting to think I have low porosity. I wish this was easier to figure out. I feel like I may never know! I guess the analysis is the best way to go.

Do the analysis with me Dani! I'm going to be sending mine off tonight. I'm looking forward to my results. I noticed some things that made sense about my hair when collecting my hair samples. I have this one flat/straight spot on my hair, which I seem to have coarse hair in that spot. My straight underlayer is made up of fine hair. The rest is pretty medium hair with a coarse or fine hair here and there. So if anything, you'll learn a bit more about your hair if you cut off 50+ hairs all around your head.

Yes, the GoosefootPrints one. I really loved her questionnaire, unlike the LCLF one where she looks at your hair blindly with no information about it. It took me a while to fill it out, I had to think about what I wanted to know exactly.

I'm doing the goosefootprints one now too. I've done the questionnaire, collected the hairs, I just need to pay her on etsy and mail it (but not today, it's too cold to go out unless absolutely necessary).

Dani - your thread on low porosity made me remember something. When I used to chemically dye my hair (even on virgin hair) my hair took the dye very well and color seemed to fade pretty easily on me. It also made my hair feel healthier, which my stylist would always tell me that my hair loved color. I swear I am not overall low porosity. It just can't be.

I do believe we probably have all porosities on our head. I guess it's just finding the one that is the majority.
