Schizo Skin

My skin seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis. I have oily skin however now that winter is here it is also feeling dry. I feel like I should use some type of moisturizer although I have never had good luck with any. Neutrogena Oil Free broke me out. I tried Eucerin Skin Renewal while staring the acne.org regimen and that was a disaster. I haven't been able to use any acne treatments either due to my skin feeling dry and that only irritates it more.

My acne is mild-moderate. I have been to the dermatologist but they are never much help.

So I need a moisturizer, cleanser and acne treatment recommendation.
I've been in your shoes.

Cleanser: non-detergent, non-soap and neutral PH

Moisturizer: emu oil and hyaluronic acid mixed together. Emu is a non-comedogenic biological healing oil. When mixed with HA, it makes the perfect moisturizer that will absorb right in and make your skin unbelievably soft, without breaking it out.

Acne treatment: A clean formulated beta hydroxy acid (salicylic acid) with a low PH (most salicylic acids you buy in the drug store have so many fillers and buffers that they aren't even acids anymore).

It sounds like your skin is drying out due to the winter weather, but the dead cells aren't being shed. Personally, I would use an exfolliant as needed.

The 2 oz cleanser would probably last about 2 months. You only need a tiny bit. The BHA, about the same...2 months. I buy larger sizes so that they last me several months. I put my BHA in a dropper bottle and just apply it by dripping it on my face, so that I don't waste any using cotton balls or gauze pads. Rubbing is not necessary...just getting the BHA on your skin is enough. The emu and hyaluronic acid would last 6-8 months or more. I only use 1 drop of emu at a time, and a tiny blob of HA, mixed together in my hands and just pressed onto my face. It's enough moisture to last me a couple days usually.

I have been struggling with acne for 30 years, on and off, and believe me, there is NOTHING at Walmart that will help you. NOTHING.

This regiminen of non-detergent-neutral-PH cleanser/salicylic acid/emu oil has cleared me up totally and finally. The key to clear skin is keeping the skin barrier intact and healthy. My skin barrier is in such great shape (because I'm not using any detergents or high PH soaps that break it down) that there's no way I can get pimples now. The BHA is the best pore clearer, and emu is anti-comedogenic and anti-inflammatory. It's all good stuff. The BHA's in the drug store are crap...they aren't even acidic, because they have so many buffers and junk fillers. The one I linked above is a very clean formulation with an acidic PH, so it will actually penetrate the pores.
A much less expensive way to go is to use a drop of jojoba oil as moisturizer. I have the same problem, I started using this at night and now my skin is glowing. I picked up a bottle at a health food store for about $8 about 6 months ago and I still have half the bottle left. The brand I use is Desert Essence.

Fotki: curlymeg

Nature's Gate Awapuhi Volumizing Conditioner
Graham Webb Making Waves gel
jojoba or coconut oil as a DT

Hair is pretty great now that it's colder, now I'm focusing on my skin. Sniffle.
Jojoba oil is a good substitute for emu oil. It's also non-comedogenic.
Will the cleanser you listed remove makeup? If not, what can I use to do that?
Sorry for all the questions but how did you come upon this regimen?

Can bp be supplemented for the sa? I have bp from acne.org.

About how long before I tell if it is working?

You could...but BP is VERY drying and irritating. Most people can't tolerate it in high enough concentrations to do much good. If you got red/dry/irritated from it before, you probably will again. I MUCH prefer SA to BP. SA does just as good of a job of exfoliating within the pore, and it's not as irritating. It gives better skin texture to.
