Default Question for RCW

My brother has a moderate acne problem. He's tried Proactive, Acne Free, Burt's Bees acne line, African Black Soap (which made it worse) and several others. Most made zero difference, and if it did make a difference it wasn't by much.

He's fed up with his acne.

Suggestions on products or what to do to get rid of acne??

If he's been using drugstore cleansers (all of which cause acne, because they damage the skin barrier) it's worth trying a better cleanser for 3 months to allow skin barrier healing. He should use a non-detergent pH-neutral cleanser, like this one:

Pure Skin Formulations - Advanced Cosmeceutical Skincare

And 10% benzoyl peroxide, applied every night, to the whole face (not just the spots).

If this doesn't clear up his skin, he needs medical treatment.

Thank you!

I told him and he said he wants to try it.

Now does he need to apply the benzoyl peroxide before or after a moisturizer? I'm guessing before.

You'd apply BP before a moisturizer. Keep in mind that many people with acne will break out from moisturizer. I cannot use it without consequences. Luckily, I rarely need it because my skin is naturally oily.

On the rare occasion that I need moisturizer, I'll use a plain hyaluronic acid...which isn't actually an "acid" at all. It's a humescent "ingredient" used in many moisturizers and will offer a little moisture without the pore clogging other ingredients. It's very light...like a gel. PSF sells a very nice HA.

I thought I'd update you and let you know that his skin has completely cleared up by using PSF Gentle Cleansing Castile and a 10% benzoyl peroxide and he is very happy about it. He did occasionally need a moisturizer and used HA in the colder weather.

Thank you so very much!!
