How to keep mineral foundation from looking "powdery" on the skin....

As some of you know, I'm a fairly new convert to mineral makeup. I've got oily skin and I've found that MMU gives me the most versitility in coverage while feeling light and weightless on the skin. I honestly don't know why it took me so long to convert!

The only "issue" that I'm having is that sometimes I notice that after I apply my foundation, it looks a bit "powdery" on the skin. I know that MMU is supposed "melt" into the skin, but it seems that mine takes quite a bit of time for this to happen (usually a few hours). I'm thinking it might be the primer I'm using (or maybe I don't need a primer?). I've googled and read all kinds of suggestions from mixing with a moisturizer and applying as a tinted moisturizer, applying with a damp brush, and even using a "setting spray" to get rid of the powdery effect.

Do you ladies that are MMU users have any application tips and/or suggestions for reducing the powdery look of MMU foundation?

hey girl! my skin is SO oily i don't worry about it because i know within an hour it sinks in BUT one thing that gets you there quick is a light mist of the evian facial spray. keep it away from your face so you get the lightest mist. this will give your makeup the look of moist, hydrated, non-powdery skin. i buy these at ulta. oyin has a body mist that smells divine. i wonder if it would work the same way on the face. i use it on my body all day for moisture and the scent makes me happy.

This was exactly what I was going to recommend! If you can find a spray bottle with a very fine mist, that would probably work just fine, but I've had no luck finding one fine enough. If you can't find the Evian spray locally, you can get it at drugstore.com.

I personally find I do better without a primer - my skin doesn't seem to like the silicones that most contain, and it's almost like it does prevent the powder from "melting" in, as you described. I also seem to get oilier quicker with the primer than without.
2C/3A/3B - modified CG - fairly fine now, normal/low porosity/normal elasticity

Current Main Rotation: MG217 medicated or Aim2Health 'poos for scalp, Elucence cond., Spiral Solutions Protein & Deeply Decadent Cond., CJCCCC reg or lite,CJ Pattern Pusha,, Giovanni LA Hold Hair Spritz + lots more, sporadically

HG Method: Super Soaker + Smasters-ing, brief upside down diffusing w/360o diffuser then clips/clamps & air dry. Newly gray - stopped my henna glosses!

ncc what's your main reason for wearing a primer? maybe you should go without to see if that helps.

the evian mist really is pretty amazing!

Yeah, the anti-matte products don't seem to have the same effect as primers.

I've never tried mineral foundation. My skin is pretty "normal." I use sunscreen which tends to give me a shiny look that I don't like. Would mineral foundation look well on me? I wonder if I can get a sample somewhere - Sephora?
2/c and some 3A. Modified CG.
Protein sensitive
Highly porous. Color over grey.
Best 1st day method: Super Soaker
Conditioners: Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner,
Deep condish: Curl Junkie Curl Rehab
Stylers: Mix Curls in a Bottle into everything for shine. Terrible pj
Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.
Every day is a gift
I usually do primers because in the past with traditional liquid/powders they would literally slide off my oily skin. Today I'm wearing my BE w/o a priner and so far I'm not too oily...and no powder effect either. Maybe I need to reserve the primers for night/going out/extreme heat situations and for daily "work" makeup go sans primer? It's only noon here so I'll report back later today with how it turns out.

You can get samples of bare minerals at sephora or at a bare minerals counter (Macy's and Nordstroms has them). They are the most "mainstream" mineral makeup company, but a lot of users here like an indy internet company called Meow Costmetics. They offer smaples of ALL thier products for $1 each and the samples are really generous and have enough for a few applications. They are currently having a 25% off sale (code is wildride) and they are on facebook. They have really good customer service and something like 85 foundation shades so if you are hard to match, give them a try!

sometimes when you get a better makeup product for your skin you don't need as much extra stuff to make it look right. i still get a little oily but part of that might be the extreme heat. i just use blotters.

I can say that since I've started using MMU, I've been less oily than usual so that might have something to do with it as well.

that's awesome. i think mineral makeup is more nourishing for the skin so that probably helps. i'm the same way, not as oily but the heat index here was 116. kind of hard not to get weird skin stuff when it's that hot outside but like you when i'm in all day i can usually go until later in the day before needing to blot, etc.

I love Meow, too - much prefer it to BE. I use it in the summer, but I used Illuminare liquid mineral foundation last winter - it looked better on my older skin in the cold. No powdery mess either.

Nappy-Curly, since you're acne prone, I bet you'll find your skin does even better if you don't use primer all the time - mine sure does. It can just breath better without those silicones and stuff, I think.

Blissdrops, good tip about the mist - just like with perfume

Curlypearl, you can get samples from Meow to find your colors and formula - sorry if I overlooked someone else already mentioning it

I've never found a spray bottle that worked for this method suggested, so what I do is take a mineral makeup brush, wet my hand, lightly press the brush onto where I wet my hand, and then just 'stipple' it across my face. Definitely helps to 'set' the makeup for me.

I love the Meow products, but never have had the experience of any makeup product or method lasting more than a couple hours, the way so many people rave about with the mineral makeup products! My skin's ruddiness and breakouts always show through before too long. However, the above helps to extend this time considerably. =)
i actually just switched to mmu from using bobbi brown, then korres wild rose liquid. i always thought the powdery appearance had to do w application technique and how fine milled the powder is. i use alima pure and not only do they have great prods, but the cust service is great too. they have samples for a buck fifty. they have about 4 undertones and about 9 shades for each. the golden 5 matches me peefectly. i dnt use primer or set with water or any other spray and it lasts most of the day. i touch up maybe once a day. a lil goes a long way too.
Hi.., I am searching for a solution from two days at last here I found that. The information provided by all of you is good. I hope it may be helpful to some more people like me. Thank you.
