Mascara questions

I have naturally long, curly lashes. I wish they were a tad thicker; but for some reason, volumizing formulas dont do well on me. I have tried. The one exception is l'oreal's Voluminous, but for some reason I am not crazy about it. I would like to find a great drug store mascara, one that is not waterproof (I dont like having to use an eye makeup remover). Any suggestions? Ohm BTW, my eyes are brownish hazel, so I can wear black or violet.
I also find L'Oreal's Voluminous enhances thickness. I like it, though. What is it that doesn't appeal to you about it?

Another mascara that thickens my lashes is Yves St. Laurent "Shocking" mascara. It is gorgeous but I will never buy it again because it is so expensive - I think it is about $30 and it didn't seem to me any better than the L'oreal. I succumbed one day to temptation. If you can swing the $$$ - it's a beautiful mascara. I'm not sure about the range of colors.

Diorshow is reputed to have great thickening qualities.
2/c and some 3A. Modified CG.
Protein sensitive
Highly porous. Color over grey.
Best 1st day method: Super Soaker
Conditioners: Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner,
Deep condish: Curl Junkie Curl Rehab
Stylers: Experimenting with cones & sulfates while the dews are high.
Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.
Every day is a gift
I am somewhat of a fan of Paula Begoun, "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me". I believe she says that there is really not that much difference between an inexpensive vs an expensive mascara. You seem to be agreeing with her. I would not purchase an expensive mascara - in fact, today, I got a Wet and Wild, and it is perfectly fine. I dont know what I didnt like about Voluminous. I think it may have been the brush. I am not a fan of those big fat brushes - I feel like I have less control than with a smaller brush.
