Breakouts on the side of the face
 
I'm wondering if anybody else just seems to breakout at the side of the face? And what would cause that? I'm thinking maybe it's my hair because I have side peices that go down to my jaw and I'm on modified CG therefore usually have a few products on my hair...could that then transfer and clog my pores? OR it could be the fact that I always sleep on the sides of my face. It's really weird but that's where I'm most comfortable. Because of that I change my pillow cases almost every two days, but it hasn't really seemed to make a big difference. Any insights? it's really odd and I've noticed it on a few other people. TIA :D

If you have skin thats prone to this then the oil from any products your using, plus natural hair oils will aggrevate it. Just try putting less product on the hair that directly touches your face.

Changing your pillow case frequently is good though as is tying your hair up at night to keep it out of your face.

Thanks for the suggestions Twirly Girl. I guess I'll tuck my side peices behind my ears for now on. It's also kinda sucks because the side peices of hair were more intensely highlighted a while back and are dryer then my other hair and need more product.

Do you talk on the phone alot? I used to have this problem when I had to talk on the phone at work all day long. I finally got a headphone to wear so it made it better (but mussed my curls :oops: ). In the meantime, keep your phone clean by swabbing it with rubbing alcohol now and then.

Actually I don't talk on the phone that much, but that's interesting. If doing that can irritate your skin or even make it break out, then it probably is something like my hair. I've been trying to not sleep on my side but that's the way my body goes as soon as I fall asleep :roll: I have little baby hairs around the sides and it's impossible to put them up at night so I wind up sleeping on them. Lol, it's a weird problem, and I'm just guessing it's my hair. The keep the phone clean advice is always good though, thanks :)

I read somewhere that if you only break out on your jaw it is hormonal. I just dab a little tea tree oil on and wait it out.

A few months ago, I started breaking out on the sides of my face, and it was HORRIBLE! I finally figured out that it was one of my hair products that I was using (Loreal Curl Vive Spray Gel). I stopped using it, and the next day, my skin started looking better. So you may start experimenting with cutting out a hair product, and see if it helps any.

I recently read something - can't remeber where :oops: - that the bumps start out as ingrown hairs and then get irritated. The article said that people forget to exfoliate the sides of the face and earlobes and that styling products irritate them. It made sense to me - I was having a real problem in this area. I used a simple AHA product that I got at Walgreen's. I try to do this at least once a week now. It has really helped. Of course now I'm really into the Aspirin mask so maybe I'll replace it with that.

This happened to me. I have long layers, and I was breaking out wherever my hair touched the side of my face. The culprit was Ouidad's Tress F/X (wheat germ oil). If I were you, I would go to the Sage skincare site and compare their list to the ingredients of your hair products, and see if you have any 4 or 5 ingredients. If you do, take a break from those products and see if it helps.

I also have heard that jawline breakouts are hormonal, if hair and phone issues are ruled out. Birth control pills are supposed to help, but I don't know that first hand.

Some Dr's will prescribe the contraceptive Dianette for problem skin but the only trouble is if you want to come off it at any point then your skin can flare up again! I was on it for about a year but had to come off it as it raised my blood pressure

Another suggestion if you've tried elimintaing hair products and are still breaking out would be to do food elimination - one week cut out dairy, the next wheat etc. I'm lactose intolerant which means that anything dairy makes me feel bleurgh but also causes my skin to break out. If I ate a cheese sandwhich I can guarantee I'd have bad skin in a day or two

Thanks for all the advice ya'll. The side of my face finally started clearing up about three weeks ago. I think hair products were definentely a part of it. I'm using a little less product now and I'm more conscience about hair being in my face. Instead of letting my side peices which go down to my jaw fall straight down I tuck them behind my ears. Interestingly my skin seemed to start not liking my hair there either, hence thinking the products have a role in it.

Another weird but cool thing is I stopped washing my face with soaps, exfoliating, or anything of the sort and just use water :shock: Seems crazy, maybe a little unclean too lol, but it has made a HUGE difference. I make sure to "wash" thouroughly with water and that appears to be enough. Some soap in the shower but other then that, nada.

Oh yeeeah, cutting coffee out of my diet has also seemed to help. I've heard a lot of stuff about coffee and caffiene in general being bad in relation to acne, not sure why. It's really hard for me to completely cut it out, I love coffee, but it's worth it.

Awww, crud, was reading this thread for info. about my own breakouts and am sitting here drinking coffee. :( I love the stuff and I know I drink too much. I have tried cutting back to one cup a day but there is temptation all around me and I appear to have no willpower when it comes to that particular bean. Let me know how much, if any, you are allowing yourself and the results.

Hey I'm sitting here drinking coffee too :lol: I shouldn't have said "completely cut out" up there. I stopped drinking it on weekday mornings and usually not on Sundays. But when it comes to Saturday mornings, coffee is a must. It was hard for the first week or so. If you try quitting, start out gradually, cold turkey is super hard, a slow decrease is easier on the body. So far my skin seems happy about it, but I have to also factor in the other changes I've made. Drinking lots of water is also suppose to be really healthy for the skin because it aids the kidneys in filtering out toxins which can contribute to acne. It's hard I know, but atleast give it a try and see if it helps, good luck!
