Nodular/Cystic Acne

Is there anything I can do at home to get some relief on this?? I usually only get one at a time, but they are awful! I called for an appointment with my doctor but they are a month out on appointments and most likely it will be long gone by then. It is really painful and of course smack dab in the middle of my forehead!! Aaargh!

Tea tree oil has done wonders for me. It works the best for me if I start using it immediately when I feel one coming on. Sometimes I can catch it when there is nothing visible yet but it is starting to hurt and stop it in it's tracks. I have found myself getting very sensitive to the tea tree oil though. I have to make sure I get it just on the spot and not other places. If I'm not careful it can get extremely drying which I think leads to teeny tiny white heads. I don't want to scare you away. It's still totally worth it just be careful and watch how your skin reacts. I try to use it on a spot as often as I could get away with which was several times a day. Now I kind of have to judge how bad the spot is and how my skin is handling the oil. Good luck!

I'm glad I could help! I know how painful it is. My experience has always been that most people aren't very sympathetic because often times they aren't even very visible. I went to a dermatologist for years and took prescription medicines, antibiotics etc. Maybe it was just a coincidence but when I found the tea tree oil I was able to stop going.

Oh, another thought, I don't know fi it really helps it go away but sometimes if i have a really painful one I will put some ice on it. It can help it feel better and I figure it might help the swelling go down.

Thanks for the advice again. It's almost healed now. Can't believe how well the tea tree worked! Now I may have to stock up for future issues. I recently switched to Shea moisture African black soap for my face and it helped the "normal" acne quite a bit but those suckers are a whole different animal also read that glycerin soap is good for acne so I may try that if I ever make it through the bar of black soap I have

I'm so glad I could help. Like I said I really understand! Just keep an eye on how your skin is responding to the tea tree. When I first started using it I put it on my face all over every night before bed. I think I did that for a few months with great results and no problems. Then my skin started getting extremely dry from it so I had to cut back.

It is interesting to hear which soaps are working for you. I have always used Neutrogena products but the past few years I have noticed they are too harsh for my skin. I'm not as young as I used to be!! Now I have switched to Cetaphil which is much more gentle. Both were recommendations from the dermatologist way back in the day. I have continued to stick with her recommendations even though it has been years since I have been. There are so many new products now but I am so careful about what I put on my face. I'm scared to get too adventurous.

I was surprised the black soap didn't dry me out at all. I never had luck with bar soap on my face. The nutrogena always dried me out and left my face feeling like it was going to crack. I was a little dry the first couple washes with the black soap but now I don't even have to use a moisturizer

There is a lot of good advice about acne at acne.org. Personally I suspect that for many people a combination of things is necessary (identifying and, if possible, eliminating the cause of the acne; what to put on skin; etc).

For many years I used benzoyl peroxide wash in the morning to wash my skin and glycolic acid gel at night, and that helped a lot too.

I also have a Zeno and it seems to help with the normal pimples that grow outwards instead of inwards. (I didn't feel like it helped with the cystic acne that grows inwards, but it is worth trying)
What's ur routine? If u don't have one u def should! Cleanse, tone, treat, moisturize. Once I did this my cystic acne has gone away! I use BP cleanser, witch hazel, BP to spot treat, then aloe vera gel to moisturize. I also do a baking soda mask 2-3xs a week and steam w a hot washcloth. That really helped w the cystic acne.
The only step I don't do is the toner. Oddly enough I also have dry excema prone skin so any toners tend to dry me out and cause flare ups. What is the BP? So far the tea tree has helped the most recent bumps but I am trying to figure out the best things for prevention! I am in a very dry climate and am thinking since my hair isn't fond of glycerin and other humectants my skin may be sensitive as well? Any recs on a moisturizer??

BP is benzoyl peroxide and I use the aloe vera gel to moisturize. Mario Badescu also makes a nice green tea moisturizer for all skin tupes. Do u exfoliate?
Regularly helps with the dry patches. My poor skin is the poster child for combo skin lol. Greasy forehead, nose and chin and dry cheeks I always thought once you were in your 30's acne would be a thing of the past! Boy was I wrong

salicylic acid and products containing it.

Maybe get a prescription for future use if it is a recurring problem.

For a whole year I broke out in hundreds of nasty huge cystic nodules on my cheeks and neck. I went to derm's but nothing they prescribed ever worked for me. I tried everything you could find at the drug store, NOTHING worked. My aunt started having me get facials from one of her friends who is an esthetician. I had the worst case of cystic acne my she had ever seen. After seeing her for a few months, she started having me use a retinol treatment. And OMG that stuff worked wonders. It made me peel a little, but it totally cleared me up. Now I never break out. It totally saved my life.

Try Clean &Clears 10% benzoyl peroxide spot treatment. Treated me worst acne! But then I realized my acne was cystic bumps were caused by dryness- I used Aveeno's daily moisturizer with SPF. So. Good. Best face routine combination! Wash with gentle mild soap!
I have started doing a double cleanse, once to get the makeup off and once to actually clean the skin. I had a facial at Ulta over the weekend and picked up her recs for the dermalogica line of products. At almost a week I am already noticing changes in my skin! The active acne I had is almost gone and it seems to be pulling the cysts to the surface. It would be amazing to have zero bumps! I bought the small sizes of everything as a test. I am giving it a real shot and am going to use nothing but these until the new year. If it continues to help I will buy the full size products. Expensive but worth it for me

Mario Badescu's buffering lotion works well when you do have one.
One of the recs from ulta was Mario's drying lotion
