Need a shade of lipstick for brunette

Every color I seem to buy is WRONG! I just can't tell in the store what shade is going to look good. Today I bought coral (Almay line) and it looks so orange on me! ICK.
What color and brand would you guys suggest for a brunette, olive type skin color. Not high end either. In case I don't like it
Thanks....

are you looking for a coral shade?

or this is in general?

do you consider MAC to be high end?

How much is Mac? I really don't want to spend more than 10.00 on a lipstick. I wouldn't mind paying more than that IF I knew it worked on me

I'm brunette with a medium complexion and anything mauve or brownish-red/purple looks good on me. I keep away from anything too coral, peach, or bright red.
You can try lipsticks on in the store before you buy them. Even drugstores like CVS and Rite Aid will let you try them. Go to the mall and hit up a department store cosmetic counter and try all their colors. They'll love to have you there.

Generally olive skin is considered warm, and can wear warm shades (think orangy side of pink or red) or neutrals. I'm a cool-toned brunette, so I go towards the blue-y sides of reds and pinks...you don't want to do that.
MAC will cost more than $10, but there are some shades they have that you might like - Viva Glam 5 and Hug Me are two that suit a lot of skin tones.

But I picked a mauve color and I liked it. It's flat tho so I will add a touch of clear lip gloss.
When I have some extra time and in the city, I think I will go to a department store and try some other ones -- maybe a higher end. This one I got is cheap --9.00 so I'm sure the ingredients aren't the best but I needed some color FAST.

I'm a fan of mixing lip colours. If you have any lipsticks that don't suit you, then mixing might be a way to save them. I spent ages looking for a good red lipstick. Finally bought one, but it looked too bright. Wiped a lot of it off and put on a trusted brownish colour. The result was the perfect red.
