Default Biotin and acne

Does anybody know if biotin can cause acne? I've posted pictures of my hair on the growing out section of these boards because since i started taking biotin a couple of months ago my hair has been growing really fast. One of the girls asked me if biotin caused acne because she had heard others say that.

When i think about it, it can be very true. I've only been suffering with acne for a few months now, never used to get them; always had a very dry skin. The acne started about the same time when i started taking biotin.

That girl would be me! LOL
I did a search online and found a few articles, but this link is from the Black Media Hair Forum
http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/foru...11&PID=1980176

I read somewhere that if you take Vitamin B it should help clear up your acne.

i keep hearing this about biotin but i don't think it made my skin any worse at all. all the same when i finish what i have i'll probably just stick to the multi. maybe it doesn't effect me since i'm taking a good multi...

For me, extra biotin (aside from what is already in my multivitamin) did cause cystic acne. I was taking the 5000 mcg (? not sure of the initials) capsule sold at GNC. I did notice hair growth in the beginning and stronger nails. When I stopped the extra biotin, the cystic acne subsided -- I was prone to 2-3 of these bumps per year prior to extra biotin, but the extra gave me 2-3 per month.

That being said, extra biotin doesn't do this to everyone. I think it's a YMMV thing.

This is a crosspost from the growing out section:

Well i'm quite sure it was biotin that caused my pimples. I was looking at pictures taken last summer: clear skin. And on the boards i've searched for posts from me about biotion. I found out i started taking biotin aug 22nd. I have some pictures starting on october 1st and my skin started to look bad from there on and got worse as time passed.

Maria, i'm so glad you posted your question, if you didn't i would be on biotin for at least another year because it works miracles for my hair. But i'd rather have clear skin than longer hair.

NO MORE BIOTIN FOR ME!!!

hmm maybe i'll give up biotin. i've consistently had acne although it improves with better skin care...i know i get biotin in my multi so that extra 5000 mcg might be too much!

I've heard biotin causes breakouts only if you take more than like 2500 mcg per tablet or capsule. So the 5000 mcg is probably too much.

But idk, this is just what I've heard.

If you're taking B5 (Pantothenic acid) in high doses to combat acne, then it's usually recommended you take Biotin to combat the hairloss than can come with high dose B5. I'm taking B5 but not in high doses, and was going to up my dosage and add biotin to the mix... now, maybe not so much...

When I initially started taking biotin, I noticed an increase in breakouts, but it's been several weeks now and things have seemed to calm back down. I think it was a shock to my system at first - going from 0mcg/day to 5000mcg/day - but now that I've been on it for several weeks, I think my body has adapted to it.

Like curls2grow said, I think it just depends on the individual person.

I had issues with it and I was taking a pretty low dosage but I could be one of those it affects no matter what. I like my nails and hair growth but I did not like the breakouts so I stopped taking it. I was taking a hair nail formula so it had other stuff it in it too.

I get 2000 mcg/day in a chromium/biotin supplement for blood sugar control. I've been taking it about a year and can see no difference in acne. I still get it, but no more than before.

I've been taking Biotin for a while now and haven't had any breakouts. The dosage is low (1000 mcg) so maybe that's it.

Default biotin and acne

for the ladies that say biotin broke you out are you drinking enough water? since biotin is a water soluble when you take over a certain amount of biotin you have to increase your water intake to make sure all of the biotin passes thru your system if not you will have a build up an that will cause you skin to break out.

hope this helps

Thanks for that reminder! I've been taking the biotin for a good long while but just recently started having trouble with cystic acne. Didn't think it was related, but after being reminded about drinking plenty, I realize I probably haven't been drinking enough recently and that could very well be the cause. I hope so, because nothing else is working at the moment!

I got acne break-outs a few weeks after I started to take biotin. But two weeks later it was gone again.

Please don't use biotin!! I never had a problem with breakouts other than normal teenage zits here and there back in the day. I started taking biotin to help improve the health of my hair and my skin broke out the very next day! I had huge pimples all over my face. They were red and were painful. When they would pop they would bleed and drain. It was terrible. There were so many breakouts on my face that I didn't want to leave the house. I felt so ugly and I was left with acne scars. Luckily, once the biotin got out of my system the pimples stopped sprouting but this took a while as I was taking the 1000mcg tablets. Please consult your dermatologist before taking these. You don't want to have pimples ALL over your face like I did.

By the way, I drank plenty of water daily, I don't consume caffeine, and I don't eat extremely greasy foods.

Thumbs down Biotin broke me out too

It has been reported (Biotin) to cause cystic acne which is exactly the kind that I am having. I've never had acne this bad before. There are so many blogs on it. I googled it and A LOT of people are having the same problem. Apparently, Biotin causes an over production of sebum which leads to more clogged pores, breakouts etc. So is Biotin not good to take at all? Well they say it is good for hair, skin and nails but only in low doses like 300mcg (not 3000 or 5000).
Because the body may be retaining so much when taking large doses, breakouts will be aggressive (like cysts). I wanted to know if there was a way to reverse/cure it and I found:
1. Stop taking it so that it naturally breaks down in your body.
2. Drink lots of water to pass it through your urine.

3. Take "avidin" which is a protein that binds to Biotin and breaks it down.
Avidin is basically raw egg white. I definitely drank one this morning. Can you altleast whip the egg white? That's basically whipped cream right? Well maybe, but I didn't want to add sugar or anything to "deactivate" the Avidin. Maybe whipping it will cause CO2 to get trapped, thereby reducing the effects of the protein. (I'm no expert) Anyway, there were too many variables and I just wanted pure results. It actually has no taste, the egg white. The disgusting part is the slither as it goes down. I'm basically done taking those biotin pills. I also can't seem to find any other kinds of foods containig Avidin. They say it's a specific protein found in egg albumin. I don't mind doing the eggs though because I need this **** to go away ASAP!

I should be posting an update in about a week.

I have been taking a massive dose of biotin for the last month or so - 10,000 mcg per day except on weekends. I have yet to report any skin issues.

I wonder if it's because I take a break on weekends?
