Benzoyl Peroxide vs Salicylic Acid
If you are using bp should you stay away from salicylic? Will combining the two cause some kind of wierd reaction?

I think ProActiv combines both, and it didn't cause any bad reactions on my face. SA does nothing for me, but BP works wonders on my acne.

I'm using both. I'm just wondering though if it's too drying. I do have sensitive skin though. When I've finished my salicylic acid cleanser, I'm going to try a gentle one. I think it's the the BP that's helped my skin so much. I used to get a lot of cystic acne around my nose, but haven't had any now for months.

if you are using BP, I would stay away from SA at the moment, unless you use it very very gently once a week or something. BP dries your skin out a lot and so does SA- so if you do try it, be very gentle and try it only once a week, max.

the acne cure program is:
1 - salicylic acid (2%)
2 - glycolic acid (8-10%)
3 - benzoyl peroxide (2.5-5%)
i used to use washes but now i use paula's choice products and layer them (sometimes skipping the glycolic acid) and it works wonderfully!! i use the percentages recommended and it works great...no adverse reactions.

If you are using the benzoyl cream, it's ok to have a cleanser with sa in it?

Believe it or not SA is much better for your skin then BP. BP is known for causing redness and drying out the skin. My recommendation would be to use only 1% or 2% SA which is over the counter and it's gentle on skin and you get fast results.

What products are you using? Are these drugstore products or special order.
My acne just keeps getting worse. If a pimple comes...it seems to go away but then it's just red forever in that spot.
So annoying.

inheritedcurls try this:
Acne Cure Program
1 - salicylic acid (2%)
2 - glycolic acid (8-10%)
3 - benzoyl peroxide (2.5-5%)
4 - sunscreen (spf 25 or higher)
wash w/ a regular cleanser (i buy mine from paula's choice along w/ all the other items above) then layer each item. it seems like a lot of work but IT WILL HELP YOUR ACNE!!!
there's a book calle the acne cure that explains each step and why it is important in the treatment of acne. what i have above just boils it down to the steps. also the book recommends applying the taking off...i found i had MUCH better results just layering and leaving it on. i do this once a day (morning only) because of the bpo and sheets, etc but it's been very helpful. as long as i stick w/ it i have nice skin. it's worth it to me....and a lot less hassle than getting on accutane or some other prescription which i personally did not want to do.

Okay, another dumb question. Where do you buy these things? Are they in a bottle and you mix them all together???

each can be purchased at www.paulaschoice.com
layer each one on separately....do not mix them up. if you can browse through the book called the acne cure or the book called breaking out (both on amazon)....they both explain the importance of EACH product in treating acne. i personally prefer breaking out....lots of good information and tells you about products you can buy in the store. i chose paula's choice but you don't have to use those products.

There are a lot of products in the drug store or grocery store that will be 2% salicylic acid = clean and clear, neutrogena etc. - just read the label.
I finally found a glycolic acid product at Walgreens called "Pimple Eraser" it was $9.99 and comes in a little white bottle that looks like a bingo dabber.
Then of course there are also many brands of benzoyl peroxide = Neutrogena etc. (keep it in the refrigerator, according to one of the books this makes it more effective.) My sons are allergic to the benzoyl, so I just use it myself when I need to.
My son has had some mild improvement with the addition of the glycolic acid. He has been using it about a month.

cricket is right....most products are in the drugstore.....i had a hard time finding 2.5% bpo but 5% is available. for the quality, size, price and convenience of one stop shopping i like p.c. but the most important thing is looking for items based on the active ingredient and the % of the ingredient.
good luck!!

I just realized that one of the products I'm using from Dermologica has salicylic acid 2%. I'm going to start using it twice a day and then try to pick up the other two products at the drug store.
I'm also going to order the book.
Question. I'm guessing you layer this in the morning and then put your makeup over it?
Thanks for all your help!!!

yes....i use VERY thin layers and it sinks right in. i think w/ the bpo you shouldn't skimp but it doesn't have to be a thick coat by any means. i actually don't wear foundatin but i apply an oil control lotion & powder some days or just nothing after the sunscreen. you can wear makeup though....i have done it.

Okay, I now have all the products. I will start this routine tonight. Woo Hoo. I'm excited and hopeful this will clear up my skin. The order above is the correct order right?
I plan on using this with my facial soap and toner. That will be fine right?

Wouldn't all of these products used at once be extremely drying to your skin?

For me, I can't even use bp and sa together. Heck, even just bp dries out my skin.
I would like to hear from the ladies who do use all of these, though. What does glycolic acid do for you? Do you apply it to your whole face? Is it drying at all? TIA

for me it's not drying AT ALL....again i use the p.c. brand of products so there's not perfumes or extra stuff (like tea tree as an example) that can dry out the skin. plus i use the 2.5% bpo which i was only able to fine w/ the p.c. brand. i read on another acne website that 2.5% is the best strength because it's NOT drying but still kills the bacteria that causes acne.
sorry i don't have the book in front of me right now but the steps are supposed to clean deep in the pores, turnover skin cells and "dislodge" the old gunk and dead cells and i know the bpo kills the bacteria that causes acne under the skin....sorry i'm not more scientific but i don't have the books in front of me right now...and i'm supposed to be studying for an exam i have tues morning.

Drying my skin out is the one thing I am concerned. I do not tend to have really oily skin. I'm going to test this out...and see how my skin does. If I feel it's getting to dry...I'll probably rotate the products in and out till I find the perfect combo. So far it seems the BP does the most drying.
FYI, I did find a BP that is 2.5% in the drug store. Neutrogena makes a product called "on the spot" something that is 2.5% BP.
I still need to order the book break out.
