I'm not really sure what my doctor thinks I have. I don't have the flushing either, but since she put me on metrogel, I've basically deduced she's thinking rosacea, although that's not a given. My older son has bouts of mild SD, and that's not the type of dermatis I've wondered if I have. I'm thinking more along the lines of perioral dermatitis, but since that's a self-diagnosis, who knows? I'm thankful that "the mother of all breakouts" is better, but I'm far from cured.

Since I have not seen a derm yet (next week) I am self diagnosing as well and from what I have read it appears to be rosacea> I do not think I have flushing but the areas where I break out - kinda all around them are redder than the rest of my face and stay that way...is that flushing?
Anywho-while it looks much better than it did - thank you MUAC toner!! - it is still noticeable due to the red spots and redder tone on my cheeks.
I am still thinking of tracking down some sea buckthorn oil. I saw a serum that is made of pomegranate and sea buckthorn oil that looked interesting. Evan Healy is the brand. But talk about expensive!!! $36 for .5 ounces!!! It better make me look like (insert name of beautiful clear skinned celebrity here).
Then while googling I found this:
Mix one part sea buckthorn oil with one part rosehip oil for a nighttime mask. Apply to the skin before you go to bed and leave it on all night. Rinse completely in the morning. According to Nature's Gift, a strong dilution of sea buckthorn oil is necessary. This mixture will also help reduce redness and inflammation.

Xcptnl, didn't you try JesstheMess's natural cleansing method at one point? I wonder how seabuckthorn oil would work as the oil used with that?
Your redness doesn't sound quite like the classic flushing. Mine definitely isn't.
The only reason I finally became inclined to agree that mine might indeed be roseacea was because of the couple of bad bouts of pustules and papules I had - which I used seabuck thorn oil on. They were just as I've read and heard about for roseacea and were definitely not just acne of any sort.
BTW, I finally went back to Whole Foods yesterday and looked for the cleanser similar to Pom5, but they didn't have anything at all from that product line. Don't know if it's been discontinued or if this store never had it - probably the latter. I've decided this isn't a very good WF - they never seem to have anything that I hear others say they've gotten at WF.

That is what I had/have too! I tried jessthemess' method but at the time I was having the bad breakout the with pustules(man that even sounds bad) and papules so I stopped.
I am interested in the mix of the sea buckthorn and rosehip oil just used a night like a moisturizer. I may try that. But if I buy the sea buckthorn oil I may try it on it's first. I would like to see if I can clear these 2 areas up. I also found this cleanser-they have a moisturizer too.

I probably should wait until my appt next week but as you know (and VTmom) having skin issues just overwhelms everything else - at least to me it does.
As I said - it is tons better but I am still unsatisfied.

This is true for me as well. My skin issues seep into every facet of my life - sad, but true. I was thinking today that my face really does look a lot better than it did, but just like you, still unsatisfied. Working on it though!

We will get there VTmom! I saw this line at Whole Foods and I was disappointed they did not have the serum-that is what I really wanted to try. They had a kit with in it but it was only sample sizes that might last 7 days they said on the box.

Isn't that the way it always is? I wish we had a Whole Foods -- the closest one is two hours away.
Good luck at the derm this week...I'll be expecting an update after your appointment!

bumping...
auntnett,
I just got some sea buckthorn oil. My face is not as horrible and hideous as it was a few months ago, but I still have issues...probably always will. <sigh> Was there anyway in particular you used this, or just as a moisturizer a.m. and/or p.m.?

VTmom let me know how it works-I am still trying to track down the evan healy serum on the ground but no luck yet. I traveled this past week and a health food store where I was carried the brand but I was unable to get the time to go into the store to see if they carried the serum.
My face is still doing good with the antibiotics and I have been using dermalogica face wash with good results. The face wash seems expensive but you use so little overall price wise is not a bad deal. I got the face wash at Ulta-it's called clearing skin wash.

xcp...I've been wondering how you've been making out w/the antibiotics. Glad to hear you're still seeing good results. I'll let you know @ the sea buckthorn. I ordered it from garden of wisdom. It feels fine on my face, so I hope I get some benefit from it. As I said in my post, my face really is "ok," still much better than before, but not great so I'm still working on it.
ETA: I'll have to check out the face wash rec...thanks.

Sorry - just saw this. It's too oily for me to use as an all over moisturizer. I dabbed it on the roseacea bumps with a q-tip at bedtime and didn't use it in the morning. I only used it while in the midst of the bad flare-up, not all the time - too oily, stinky and orange, LOL! But it did dry up the bumps quickly.

Ladies, someone mentioned an antibacterial cleanser called Hibiclens on a thread regarding antiperspirants yesterday. I'd never heard of it, so went looking for reviews about it on drugstore.com, makeupalley.com, etc. and found almost total raves about it for all sorts of skin conditions, including acne, cystic acne, and rosacea. I bought some yesterday at Walgreen's for an itchy underarm breakout (allergic reaction maybe compounded by yeast/fungal infection) but also intend to try it for acne and rosacea as needed.
Just thought ya'll might be interested . . . .

I haven't needed it recently for my face, but I am liking it for my underarm problem. Now I'll have it in my arsenal when I have an acne or rosacea flare-up.
How much was it at Wal-Mart? I think mine was $11.99 at Walgreen's. I love that it's readily available.

A 4-oz. bottle was just over 6.00 at walmart and an 8-oz. bottle was 11.00 at rite aid. I always buy a small container of a product when I first try it so I won't waste a ton of it if I don't like it. I'm still liking it. I transferred it to a foaming dispenser and that works great!

My $11.99 one was 8 oz - the only size they had.
Drugstore.com has a larger 16 oz. size for $12.99 that now comes with a foaming dispenser - if you order a few extra things to have $50 worth, you usually get free shipping. I can always find things there that I need but can't get locally any more to easily come up with that much.

I was just on makeupalley.com looking up something unrelated and noticed a sidebar of top-reviewed items. I saw calamine lotion, of all things, had like 40 5-star reviews. Curious, I followed the link to see what it was about and was surprised to find people were loving it as an acne treatment. Sounded as if many use a thin layer as a make-up base with good results.
Anyway, I remembered our conversations on this old thread and thought I'd add this to it in case anyone's still having troubles and needs something new in their arsenal. Note, I didn't read all the reviews, but it sounds like plain ol' storebrand calamine works better than Caladryl.
Knock wood, since I'm firmly in menopause since then, my cystic acne is no longer a problem. Not much rosacea issues of late either, thankfully.
HTH!
