Hi! I'm new...and I have a question about changing curl pattern?

I've been considering joining this site for a while now, and I'm so happy I finally did. It seems like a great community! I have very few friends/family who are curlies, and I really love the idea of having this outlet to discuss, share insights etc.

I hope it's okay, but I kind of have a question right of the bat...
Up until about a year maybe 18 months ago when I was 18 my hair was strictly 3a. It was soft, fairly shiny, and very mailable should I want to straighten it or give it a different look. (Although I usually went natural). It was always very easy to style/clumped well without any effort. Now however I'm 20, and it is completely different. It is 2a and stringy in the front while the back has transformed into a very messy 3b. It is often frizzy, messy, and dry and I struggle to get nice definition. I don't know what possibly could have happened! My hair style hasn't changed nor has my routine. I rarely use heat, never use chemicals and I'm still living in the same climate. I know they say your hair changes over time but I didn't think it could be so drastic! I miss my old hair and have trouble accepting this new hair reality. Is there anything I can do?
Check out LiveCurlyLiveFree to determine ur hairs properties (texture, porosity, density...), then seek out curlies with similar properties for suggestions on technique and products. Good luck & Welcome! it sounds like ur ready for a great journey to get to know ur new head o' hair...

Welcome Chamomile. I know the feeling - I was stick-straight as a kid with only a bit of wave. In my teens I had a shaved head, then a pixie cut and when I finally let my hair grow back in my early 20's... surprise, curly! Body chemistry, I'm sure.

I say love your hair, pamper it for a while with CG methods, and don't make any big style changes until you feel like your hair itself is in better condition. I used to do CG all through 2010, and it didn't take long for my hair to look tons better. I fell off the wagon (I'm a reformed product junkie, sob!), but I'm back because it worked so well for me!

Girl i feel you. I used to be 3a/3b and in the past year I've turned into a 2b/2c. I started the cg method a few days ago and I'm hoping it will help to revive my curls as i miss them so
2b/2c, Med density, Med Porosity, Fine/Med width, Med length, layers start below ears. Just my shot in the dark for my hair properties. Growing out bleached highlights Fall 2012, growing out dyed hair March 2013. Makes for a confusing mix of properties. Learning how different processes affect hair properties. Using lot of drugstore products right now. Determining what's right for my hair in my climate. Pittsburgh has a little bit of everything weather wise. Modified CGM since March 2013.
