Default New here and need help with picking products!

Hello all! My name is angelica and I've been CG since 2/9/2013 so not very long. I didnt do my research and I didnt know my hair properties so I just chose products based on a 13 page list I compiled from various blogs and websites. I used loreal ever pure(?) as a cowash but my hair felt gross so I switched to loreal ever curl shampoo (no poo) and my scalp is itchy 2nd day and has little dandruff too. But from another post I am going to invest in some tea tree oil for that and get a Shea moisture low poo (the yucca and baobab one). I'm not sure how often I would have to use that though? I've been using suave coconut conditioner and since I'm a 2c I wash it all out. I used loreal ever sleek leave in and volumax gel from Sally's. it makes my hair very crunchy though. My hair properties are in my signature but I'm not sure if it will show up since I'm on my phone. I've been diffusing upside down since I suffer from flat head. Please help I need guidance, I feel like I won't see my natural air dried curl because I diffuse everytime I shower I feel like I need to restart with fresh products but I'm not sure. Should I be worried about seeing my air dried curl? My properties are 2c hair when diffused, fine hair, medium density, low to normal porosity and I think that's it. Often times the crunch from my gel doesn't scrunch out completely. I also got a hair cut bc I had insane knots in my longer hair. I only use a comb as well and dry with a pillowcase. Welcome, Angelica! It can take some patience, trial and error to find the right products and routines that will bring out the best in your curls. It seems our hair properties are similar. My hair needs a lot of protein. Have you done a protein treatment? It really makes a difference for me. Do a search for PT treatments or recipes for a homemade one. I really like using gelatin.

Besides finding the right products, it's important to determine the amounts to use. My fine hair can only handle a little product. I had to learn not to be too heavy handed or use too many products at once. Less is more in my case.

This link was really helpful to me when I started here:
Live Curly Live Free - Curly Hair Basics

Good luck to you and keep us posted on your progress!

No I don't think I have, how do you know if you need protein or not? I can't tell based on my hair properties. Also what are ALL the ingredients that can't be in our products to be truly CG? I'm still trying to figure this out and I think my no poo has silicones which is making my scalp ridiculously itchy and messed up. I just ordered Shea moisture shampoo the yucca and baobab one, also ordered the matching hair milk and tea tree oil and jojoba oil!

You mention that your hair is fine. Fine hair usually responds well to protein. The treatment I use is in this link:
PT recipe - as promised

Strictly CG just means avoiding silicones and sulfates. Many of started that way and found that that co-washing alone didn't work well. My fine hair and hard water makes me prone to build up so I use a gentle shampoo regularly (I love the Shea Moisture line!). I'm also a sucker for trying just about any product so the occasional silicone slips in. Many of us settled into routines that are "modified CG." Don't get too hung up on "the rules." Experiment and find what will work best for your hair, climate and water.

Personally, and it looks like you've done so already, finding out ones hair properties is key. According to livecurlylivefree.com (I do not know how to post the link), the type of hair (i.e. 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, etc) isn't as important as the texture, porosity, density, and elasticity.

That being said, I think you should consider the weather (as the other mhen76 suggested) with your hair properties. Also, you should see what types of ingredients coincide with your hair properties. In essence, you should focus on your hair properties LOL.

I think it is a great journey. It can be frustrating if you are just guessing things and buying, but if you thoroughly look at all the options on this site and others, you will love your curly hair. Don't forget to use the search engine to get reviews, ingredients, and information on hair products. That saved me A LOT of time!

Good Luck!

Many use this for the weather. It even makes suggestions about what type of product to use. NaturallyCurly's Frizz Forecast
