Why oh why the scrunch?

I'm a newbie to this forum, so forgive me if this is a stupid question-- but I've always wondered why so many curlies SCRUNCH their hair to set the product in. I never have- I just smooth the products through very very gently. The less I touch my hair when it's wet, the less frizz will form later. I also don't understand why I'd want to make my hair even curlier by scrunching, when it already is curly. I don't want more curl, just less poof. Whenever I scrunch I am left with terrible frizz... Am I doing something wrong?
different techniques probably work for different people...i find i need to scrunch to keep the curl....i've tried combing it through with my fingers, but then it pulls down on the curl and its less curly....myself, if my hair is gonna be curly, then i want it to be super curly, lol
Scrunching helps those that have a looser curl pattern to encourage tighter and more uniform curls and more evenly distribute products. For those that have a tight curl pattern and/or are trying to elongate rather than encourage curls, raking or smoothing products in would work better for them.
