Have I been fighting curl my whole life? (pics within)

Hi there!

I'm Sarah, and I have naturally messy hair. I mean, I always thought it was straight with a bit of body, but now I'm wondering if it might be a 2A? Maybe a 1C, but I'm here wondering if I could learn to love/enhance the wave, rather than brushing/straightening it out.

If it matters, I'm not kidding about the naturally messy bit. While it takes to straighteners and curling irons/rods very easily, it's not the type of hair that I can just run a brush through in the morning and be done. I often have pretty avant garde bedhead! It's very fine and tends to get frizzy on humid days. While I think most of my hair is the almost-straight sort of wave, I do have some distinct ringlets around my temples.

So yes. What does my hair look like to you? The first pic is air dried, unbrushed and the second is air dried, minimally brushed. And if it is indeed 2A or similar, are there any products I can try to enhance the wave, rather than brushing it out?

Thank you all in advance!

You definitely have some curl, and you may even be surprised, with the right care and styling you could end up with a 2c 3a curl. I can make my hair look like tours with brushing, and I range from 2b to 3b throughout my hair and depending on other factors.

What happens if you try following the advice on curly styling on this site?

Hi there!

As far as enhancing the wave: no brushing! Also, scrunch while in the shower, scrunch moisture out w/ a microfiber towel or tshirt out of the shower, and add products while scrunching! scrunching = gently squeezing the curl upward toward the head.

It's best to start by figuring out your hair properties: texture (fine, med, coarse), porosity (low, med, high), density (low, med, high), elasticity. You can do that by reading up on this site as well as Live Curly Live Free - Curly Hair Basics. These properties will help you find the products that you need to enhance your wave. These properties are also more important in your individualized hair care system than curl type (2a, 2b, etc.)

Many curlies on this site find that their hair curls the most when it is healthiest and has a good moisture/protein balance. Many have found their hair has become more curly since being CG. If you're really interested I would highly recommend you read the Curly Girl Handbook by Lorraine Massey. It's a great introduction to curly hair maintenance. Extra details about specific products, techniques and recipes many NC.com members have invented, scientific explanations, frizz forecast, protein/moisture balance, humectants and dew points etc etc can be found on this site. I find the curltalk forum extremely useful. Good luck!
All of the above and one more thing...you will not get amazing curls straight away, maybe not even in the first month, you have trained your hair to be one way and it will take a while for it to reach its potential doing something else...it will also take you a while to figure out how to get the best from it, but it will happen.

Search for "naturally curly" in you tube too and start watching some videos to get a feel for how to scrunch and apply products too.
