Love me some curls
I am a new curly girl (stretching the definition of "girl" since I am 50+) and loving it.
My hair bio..long hair air dried and curled with a curling iron as a teen. Shoulder length perms for a few years. several years of blowdrying a bob wedge thing (think Dorothy Hamel)...45 minutes every morning. Shorter.
For the last 15 years I have had some version of short and shorter and always lightened with Feria by L'Oreal. I was very wash, brush and go. I was using a sulfate-free shampoo, but I did use gels, mousses and serums with cones.
In the spring I had the virus from hell and had to miss my every-5-week haircut. I was liking having a bit more length so I kept putting off going for a cut. I went to my stylist to get bangs trimmed and told him I was going to grow it out a bit. He nodded his head; thinking I would go a bit but eventually hop back in his chair and have him wack it all off. That is what happened about once every 5 years (he had been my stylist for 30+years). Then he did what he always did...wacked the top of our my hair with thinning shears.
The back had been verrrry short so all that new hair grew in curly. I always thought I had wavy hair, so the curls were new and I love them. The sides grew out (think Princess Leia ear muff hair). I 'binged' how to cut curly hair so it wouldn't stick out and found this whole CG world. I decided to cheat on my stylist because I knew if I hopped in his chair he would happily cut it short and hit it with the thinning shears.
I got a curly cut from a deva trained stylist (Jamie at Wilson Means on St Louis) about three weeks ago. She was awesome. I kept the length, but she took out a lot of weight. I bought some Deva products, but I don't like how my hair feels with them, sort of like pasty straw. I am liking a couple of curl junkie products already and since I have been on vacation for two weeks I have experimented with making fsg (love it).
I think my curl pattern is 2c with some 3a in the underside on the back. I believe it is somewhat porous from being lightened. It is dense and course. I have about an inch or more of newer growth that has never been lightened; it is dark ash blonde with a bit of grey (sadly not the pretty silver grey). I have to decide what to do about color. Maybe use a dark blonde shade of Goldwell soft color on the lightened ends until it grows out and gets cut off. I know that won't cover grey, but it would look better than the two-color look; there is too much light blonde to cut off and I don't want to lighten it again.
Sorry to go on for so long, but it is fun to talk about this! I am still stopping at every mirror because I don't recognize myself.
Thanks to all who share info on this great site.
Keep on rocking those curls,
