Hello everyone!

My name is Sarah and I'm a 19 year old student in beautiful hawaii.
I have 2C fine curls, with low porosity and medium/high density.
I'm guessing my italian or Spanish side gave me the curls, and my
Polynesian side the 24/7 frizz (even while living in dry California it seemed frizzy... Ahh)
I was adopted and my mom had nice thick and long 2A hair so had no idea how to deal with my curls and frizz. I still am a bit clueless when it comes to taking care of curly hair specifically... I JUST learned toda what mousse was. Oops.

My main concern is my frizz. I can't stand how frizzy it is, and it's especially hard to deal with considering I live in a tropical climate! I would be fine with my curls be more shiny, more defined (they tend to hide under the frizz) but I do not have much volume at the top. My curls start about maybe two and a half inches from the top of my head.
I have volume due to my frizz but.. I want volume and shinyness without it!
I have tried many products to get it to go away.. I use leave in conditioners.. Etc.... But nothing works. However I do not use any hair products except for oils to try and calm my frizz.
So my goal while I'm here is to find out how to accomplish that so I can feel better about myself and finally accept my curls.. And to make a few friends along the way

Edit: I wash my hair every 3 days, always air dry, deep condition almost every time (not sure if that's good or not) and straighten the pieces that frame my face most of the time. I know people do so much more to their hair and it feels healthier than mine.. I'm pretty frustrated :/

Welcome!

First of all, I definitely understand what you are going through, as i live in a climate very similar to yours. I am definitely glad that you decided to come here for help, as I understand that dealing with naturally textured hair can be very challenging for some. From the information that you provided about your hair, simply only using leave in conditioner to tame your frizz and other hair issues, wouldn't provide much help. Also, trying to rely instead on using only oils in your hair isn't the best solution to your problem. I honestly would recommend using gel, as I believe that would work a whole lot better for you. If you have tried using gel before, which one(s) did try? And, what do you happen to use to wash your hair? Unfortunately, I do not know the different haircare brands offered in Hawaii where you live, which is why I'm asking.
Hair Characteristics:
Hair Density: Low
Hair Porosity: High
Hair Texture: Mostly fine textured, with some areas that are medium textured

Current regimen of haircare products:
Follicleanse DS Shampoo
Follicleanse DS Moisturizing Conditioner
Cantu Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream
OR
DB Sweet Cocoa Bean Moisturizing Hair Whip
Welcome!

Yeah.. I don't know too much about how to handle my hair haha. I don't even know what gels are used for, will they make my hair look wet?

We have basically everything the US mainland has I'm pretty sure.
I currently use Alba Botanica's honeydew 'natural hawaiian shampoo', and their natural hawaiian gardenia conditioner, but I also use aussie's 3 min miracle leave in treatment pretty often which works well to make my hair a bit softer. And i don't use those just because I'm in Hawaii! haha. Just cause I like the more "natural" approach to things and its the only shampoo that makes my hair squeaky clean!

Styling gel will provide your curls with hold, frizz control, better definition, and shine. Now, there are some styling gels that specifically will say that they are for use on curly hair. You can choose to use a styling gel that is specifically labeled for use on curly hair which would be perfectly fine. Or, you can opt to go with another styling gel of your choosing to use to provide your curls with control, shine frizz taming, and definition to them too.

To get volume without frizz, I highly recommend getting an ionic blowdryer with a diffuser attachment to use to dry your hair with. The ionic technology will help with locking out frizz and adding shine to your natural locks. And, the diffuser will allow for you to quickly dry your curls, while gaining volume to them during the process.
Hope this info helps!

Oh, alright! Wow, I'm kind of angry I'm learning about these sorts of products so 'late' in my life haha but yay! I know what I will be getting next time I stop at the drug store or Sallys

I was reading up on the diffusers the other night and they sound interesting.. might try that out too! Thank you so much for your help, it's highly appreciated ^^

I have type 2c/3a hair and I live in Hawaii too. I found that using body lotion in my hair really helps control the frizz and define the curls, but that might just be for me. You might find it damaging or something, but I find it works great. And it smells good
