Hi, I'm in Florida which is, I think, frizz capital of the world?
For years I wore my hair short and curly, in a kind of wedge. Then a hairdresser talked me into growing it out long and flat-ironing it, which I loved! For the first time in my life I had straight, swinging hair that didn't need a ton of hairspray. But...I was frying my hair and using all sorts of silicone products. Then my hair started falling out. The dermatologist said it was just my age. My hairdresser sold me hundreds of dollars worth of products--each and every one containing more and more silicone.
Then I saw a thread on another forum about Curly Girl and started gradually with some of the hints I read at that forum. But I kept going back to flat-ironing, mainly because my haircut ballooned out when I went curly.
Actually, a really bad haircut put me back to wearing curls! LOL After asking for my usual cut with a few long layers, my hairdresser got carried away. Three days and two more trims later (one by the shop manager, to fix the bad cut) and I'm chin length with lots of layers. It's still not cut right but I do have curls.
Now I'm doing the Curly Girl method, and I'm still just learning. My hair looks like a slightly shorter version of the flashing "after" picture to the left of this post--the Be Curlisto one right after the "before" picture (the reddish-hair). And now that I'm using very little silicone, my hair has stopped falling out and isn't nearly as dry.
My problem is that it kinda hangs in wavy "strings" like that flashing picture and I'd love it to hang in big fat curls. Not that there's anything wrong with that pic--it's beautiful! Anyway, I'm working on going for fat curls but may be stuck with it the way it is, at least until it gets long again. I do get big beautiful curls when I use a curling iron and put it in spirals but I want to get away from curling irons and all other appliances!
I'm a 3B and I color my hair red (think Bree on Desperate Housewives!). Thanks so much for this forum! I've already learned soooo much!
