Only comb in the shower while you have conditioner in your hair. You should use a wide-toothed comb too.

A brush on the other hand depends on the specific hair type. On your 3b hair DO NOT USE A DENSLY PACKED BRISTLE BRUSH EVER. And never brush while hair is dry unless you are going for a wild, frizzy, afro-ish like look..because that is what will will occur.

A good brush for you would be a Denman brush. Don't get the knock offs. Get the real Denman. You can look them up on amazon.com to see what I am talking about. Use the Deman brush to detangle hair while it's wet. You can even use it in the shower to comb through the conditioner.

I have thick 3c hair and the Denman brush works miracles. It helps to easily detangle and smooth my curls. I NEVER comb or brush my hair dry though.

The only time you want to use any other kind of brush on your hair type is if you are deliberately trying to smooth your edges back. Like if you are trying to make a ponytail or do a style where you want your edges to lay down. Then you want to use a good stiff but soft boar bristle brush. If you can't get a real boar bristle one just make sure the brush bristles are not rough and make sure they are pack together well.

They actually sell real boar bristle brushes right at Walmart so if you live in the USA you should have no problem getting one.

The best styling tool in the world though besides the Deman Brush for curly hair are your 10 fingers.
