Default newbie here

Sometime in June(I think) was my last relaxer. I have African-American hair. My new growth is wavy/ringlet curls. I have recently been thinking about transitioning and I'm going to do it! I want to try straw sets, twist, braid outs and twist outs some of which I've done before. My question is what should I be doing now to take care of my hair? Oh and I am going to slowly cut some off as the new growth comes in. I'm thinking I'll let it grow for 4 months and see from there. Would it be ok to press my new growth? How will I know when I have enough new growth to replace the relaxed hair? My hair is around shoulder length now. Any input/tips are welcome!
