Hi nice to meet you! Have you ever heard of the curly girl method? You should really look it up, there is even a whole book about it by Lorraine Massey. Also, have you tried the shea moisture line? It's all natural ingredients and I feel if your hair is extra dry, it'll drink this stuff up! You can get it at walgreens or target usually around 9.99. Hope this helps!
Hi Dawnee, I have the same type of hair and I also go no poo too! Do you have any tips on your daily regimen???
Hi there. I'm new here. I stopped relaxing my hair Jan 30 of this yr. My hair is short on the sides and back n long on the top. My natural hair type is 3c according to my mom. I'm mised with black and puetro rican blood. I came here because I need as much help as possible. I live in NYC so styling options are vast and many but I dont wanna ruin my new growth. Any help that can be provided is very much appreciated.
Hello!
I am new to the curl world (as of 3/13/12 after 1.5 years of transitioning). I woke up the day after washing and noticed how horrible my ends looked and bid my leftover relaxed ends goodbye.

You know what?
It feels great!
I love it!

I am at an awkward phase as I try to figure out what I am doing with my hair but I am sure to get the hang of it. I *think* I am 4a with some other stuff thrown in...not really sure.

Would love to talk to and meet new people who can offer any kind of advice or even just to talk to!

Enough rambling from me. Back to browsing around!

hello!

i'm monica and have been natural since i was 17 (now 33). it's been a struggle to accept my kinks, coils, spirals, and waves (think i have all types on my head but mainly 3C/4A). just now learning about my hair and how to care for it. i'm tired of being lazy about my curly head!

because i never knew what to do with curly hair: i've shaved it all off for a few years, i've only worn puffs for a few years, did the wig thing, and for the past four worn nothing but two-strand twists.

the most difficult thing for me to deal with has been the pressure to straighten my hair from other people. like straight hair would solve all the world's problems. it's ridiculous. my four-year old niece is even getting the straight is right propaganda from her daycare! the poor girl has started to pull out her beautiful curls.

hopefully, i can learn a lot from this site that will help me and her.

thanks!
Lets see after wearing wigs, braids and weaves for the past 5 years the "go natural" light bulb FINALLY went off in my head February 26, 2012 and I just did the BIG CHOP in my mama's kitchen this past Sunday, March 25 (my son's 24th birthday)

I am over the moon about my decison and ready to enjoy this journey. I am also OVER-whelmed by all the available products and have been purchasing TOO many items to try out (I have eliminated items along the way)

I have not visited a salon and have about 1.5 inches of hair to work with right now. I have NOT worn my hair out yet (wig) because I have NEVER learned or had to do my own hair and after watching so many youtube videos I am still clueless as to whose technique to follow until I get my own regime going - LOL I believe I am a 3c/4 if there was a VERY COARSE code that would be ME.

I look forward to sharing my journey with you as you are sharing yours with me. In the meantime ALL the help you can give a sista is needed and appreciated. Thanks!

Hello everyone!
I'm new here.I have been lurking these forums for about a month and I finally decided to join the community.

I'm a woman in her early-thirties.
After cutting my hair very short for 9 years, I've decided to let it grow long again.During the transition, I have discovered that my hair is naturally wavy/curly.Whether or not this is due to hormones, age or chemicals, I don't know.Although curly hair does run in my family on my dads side, I take after my mothers side whom all members have straight hair.

I used to have straight hair when I was a kid until I got it permed when I was 9 and again when I was 13.I've been coloring my hair since I was 13 and I started turning gray very slowly since the age of 17.

Hair and beauty have been an interest of mine since I was little.Although I never got into cosmetology, I do enjoy learning about all things that deal with hair.

I'd to learn from everyone here and I hope that maybe I can be helpful in return!
Hair Type: 2A (underneath), 2C & 3A.
Hello all,

It's been about 4 months since I stopped relaxing and straightening my hair, and I finally big chopped last week. I'm still learning about caring for natural hair (type 4c, lucky me!) but it's definitely been a positive adventure so far. Very excited to be here, it's amazing to have access to all this information in one central location.

Hello people.
I am new.
I feel great.
I hope you're feeling great too.

My hair is fabulous.

Hello! I feel really stupid asking, as I was super active on NC.com 5+ years ago, but I do not know how to find who has "liked" my posts. I have clicked on "private messages" and my username, and it is not working. I would appreciate the assistance so much. Thank you.

Hello All,
I am new and transitioning. Just started this journey 4-7-12.
Hi Naturally curlies...I am new to everything, the natural look (I don't even know my curl type) trying to figure that one out if someone out there can help please do. I have just started my naturally curly look about 1month ago, I did try to go natural it was like my destiny. My hair always could go awhile without a perm and I had cut my hair back in Sept 2011, and it was permed and short and sassy (Halle Berry style) spiky on top and tapered on the sides and very short in the back nearly shaved. I went through a very hard rest of the year in 2011 and was very sick and depressed and stressed. So my hair was the last thing on my mind, I did nothing to it really and thank goodness it was short because I had bed-head most of the time. I recently decided to seperate from my husband together 23yrs..and we just couldn't make it and I realized since I moved away that I lost so much of myself and a lot of my unhappiness was because of that relationship. So, what does this have to do with my hair journey?? Well, I looked at myself in the mirror and really for the first time in many years..I saw myself and I really didn't like the reflection looking back at me..I looked tired and worn out. I noticed the back of my hair had grown out into a little afro and I always would just take the scissor and cut that off and continue to let my hair grow..but this time I looked and saw the true texture of my hair..and I said to myself "Re-create Yourself" and at the point I just let it grow..then I tried to wear it in a style by flat ironing and that didn't work the style was not me...I just couldn't work it..so after of months of no perm...i noticed that about a inch of my new growth was curly but I had very straight tips or ends.. Then I went on youtube and it started coming together for me I was looking about natural curly hair..I actually was just looking at hairstyles..then I came across a youtuber Taren916 I believe , she was so beautiful and I just was captivated by her videos and I watched her natural hair journey and the words "Biig Chop" came scrolling across the screen..I was sold...the next day I took the scissors and I "Big Chopped" all the straight ends and before I knew it ...I looked in the mirror and saw a new me...with curls!!!! all over and I couldn't believe this was my natural texture..I have known I had decent hair but curly like it is ..no way. I use to have very very very very very long hair when I was younger I actually sat on it ..and I was known as the girl "with the long hair" and I hated it..because back when I was young I was teased for having long hair and no one seem to like me because of it..I didn't understand the word "jealousy" and it made me angry when my mother would say that to comfort me when I came home upset because the girls wouldn't play with me or called me "pocohontas" and back then I didn't take it as flattery because it seem like it was bad...(kids can be so cruel) anyway long story short I started to hate my hair and as soon as I was old enough to convince my mother to get a perm I did and then thats when the cutting inch by inch came until I looked like everyone else. So, in saying all that I never embraced my hair or the texture of it ..so seeing it natural was truly like a new birth for me. My mother looks at me and said, "thats the hair you were born with" she says that when gave birth to me I a head full of big curly hair..so this was no surprise to her when she saw it ...so now I am on this rebirth and growth and I feel so blessed to have been lead to the many youtubers wjhich lead me to this site and now I hope to meet new people who can help me on this journey. Sorry this post was so long..I just couldn't stop. Please feel free to share with me anything that would be good for my hair..I really don't know. Much love to all.
Hello All!

I'm new to the site, but I already love it. I've been natural now for about a year and a half. I'm loving the trials and the journey. I'm always looking for new, fun, and healthy ways to show off and take care of my hair. Thanks for all the helpful info!
Hey everyone,

I'm a newbie to this site. I found it when I was trying to figure out how to grow my hair longer. I have no idea what my hair style is because depending on what I do it can range from 2A to 3a (I think) and the hair length varies as well because of that. All I know is that I have fine hair and a lot of it. I guess when I immediately get out of the show the longest part of my hair reaches the bottom of my shoulder-blades and I usually just scrunch the hair when it is soaking wet and throw it up into a bun and let it air dry. My hair also tends to go into ringlets on the bottom layer and anywhere from 2a waves to 2c waves on the top layer. For example this morning I woke up with my hair being mostly 2a waves until the ends which were in a combination of 2b to 2c on the top and middle layers of my hair and 3a coils on the bottom most layer after I water washed it in a sink the night before.

I am a college student who is on rather busy schedule who doesn't bother with hair products other than conditioner and shampoo. I usually do a full wash (shampoo and conditioner) once a week, co-wash every other day or every 2 days, and then water wash intermittently when I don't have time to do anything else. When I condition and shampoo for some reason, I do not get as much of a curl as I do when I water wash. I get even less of a curl when I run a brush through my hair when it gets too difficult to finger comb without tearing out my hair because the loose hairs that are supposed to be shed have a nasty habit of wrapping around the other curls. So when I brush my hair out (I do this rarely like once a month or 2 months) it gets frizzy but I dampen it afterwards to lose the frizz. Since I had to do that brushing out today my hair is my guess 2a on the top layers and 2b on the bottom.

Anyways I have no idea if I am taking care of my hair correctly and I would like to learn how to do that. The major goals I have are to grow my hair to my waist at the curliest and healthiest it can be. So any advice about how I can do that would be fantastic.
Thanks!
-Liz
Hello All.

I'm new to this site and to natural hair. My last relaxer was in September 2011 and I recently decided to "big chop" on 4/1/2012. Well, I love it...the only thing is finding how to care and style my newly natural hair. I think I'm a 4b or 4c...maybe a little of both, but not really sure.

I have been lurking on this site off and on over the past month and finally decided to join the community. I look forward to all of the tips and advice this site can give me on caring for my hair.
