I got a great Curly Girl (Deva trained stylist) haircut from Cally. She was willing to use my products (or no poo as the case may be), but I decided to try out the Deva products. I can't really use them due to the fragrance, but they do work well. She listened well, fulfilled all of my requests, and advised me when asked. She didn't take off too little or too much. I will definitely go back for my next haircut!

I have previously reviewed Cally's work with much praise (see older review, below). However, since that review, I've been back twice and had disastrous results. The first time I went back, she seemed really distracted, and the cut came out incredibly uneven. I chalked it up to a bad day and decided not to hold it against her. A few months later, when everything had grown out, I made another appointment. This time, I spent about 10 minutes carefully explaining to Cally what I hadn't liked about the last cut. She seemed to be listening attentively and even agreed with me about what had gone wrong. I figured she would do a much better job this time, but she did an even worse job than she had done before. She actually cut a giant HOLE into one side of my hair!!! It was so shocking when it happened that I gasped out loud and said, "Oh my god!" She tried to act like it was no big deal, but it was obvious that she knew she had messed up. I pointed out how the other side (which she had already finished cutting) was much longer, so she offered to cut some more out of it to make both sides look even. When she finally finished up, my hair looked awful. It was long and stringy in the back and puffy and short on the sides, almost like a glam rock mullet. I left that day and vowed never to return. I stopped into my old salon a week later to see if my former stylist could salvage what was left of my hair. He was visibly shocked by how "textured" my hair was, as he put it. The curls were so uneven that he basically couldn't do much of anything without cutting off a ton of length. His advice was to just let it grow a while and avoid getting it cut at all costs. I can't tell you how disappointed my experiences with Cally has left me. Not just because the last two cuts were so bad, but because the first cut was so good!!! It's almost like she has a Jekyll and Hyde thing going on, like there's two stylists in her, and you never know which one you're going to get. If I knew for sure that I was going to get the good stylist every time, I would go back in a heartbeat. But the last two cuts were so bad that I just can't take the risk.

If you want to lose six inches of curl without your consent, go see Cally. What a disaster! I went to see Cally out of desperation, as my usual stylist had been ignoring my concerns over how she was cutting my hair and it was a total frizzy mess. Cally told me she was going to "work with the length" (my hair was almost to the middle of my back) and just clean up my style. I left the salon with hair barely to my shoulders, and a mediocre cut at best. I went back two days later so she could at least fix all the messed-up parts of my cut, and she was very nice about it, but the fact is I'm still three years away from having that length back. It has been six weeks, and I still cry about it every day. I can't find the right products for this length, so my hair always looks like crap. I can't even get it into a decent ponytail anymore, so I don't even have that to rely on when I have a really bad hair day, which is almost every day anyway. I will NEVER go to see Cally again. I'd rather never get another haircut than let her butcher my curls again.

I have had awful hairdressers before, but this experience has completely made up for all of that. Callie is so relaxed, friendly, and helpful, as well as the rest of the Toujour staff. I felt at ease right away, and trusted Callie to cut my hair. My cut is perfect. Everything I wanted Callie did, and she listened to me if I thought something else should be cut/shaped. My dense 3b hair is now more manageable and stylish. After my cut was finished, I was sorry to leave; I was having so much fun with Callie. No products were pushed on me, and she even gave me inexpensive tips on products. I ended up buying some things because I wanted them, and their product line is great for curlies. The reviews don't do Callie justice - she's that good! I had my hair cut by Callie at Toujours on May 20 for the first time. It's been nearly two weeks, and I am loving it more and more each day. Callie takes time to look at your hair, and get to know your personality. I feel defined by my curls, and Callie has helped me to love them even more. It is WELL WORTH the price. Callie cuts each curl individually, and it's a great experience. She advised that I probably won't need another hair cut until at least 8 weeks, and she mentioned that if I needed a trim in a day or two to come back in. When was the last time a stylist was that honest? Andersonville is a great neighborhood, but a little tough to get to. Don't let the location scare you off. I'd drive twice as far as I did for Callie.

I had never gotten my hair cut by a stylist who specialized in curly hair, so I was definitely in for a treat with Callie. She's a curly girl herself, so she understands the frustrations of curly hair. She was very personable and funny. During the cut (which she started dry) she let me know why and how she was cutting my hair. She told me that this cut (the Devachan curly cut method) would grow out really nicely and I probably wouldn't have to come back for several months. I usually do not leave a haircut with a smile on my face. Afer Callie cut my hair, that's all I could do! My hair looked amazing: great curl definition, bounciness, and shape. After I left and walked back to my car parked a few blocks away, I kept looking at myself in store windows! Other reviewers have complained about the price of a curly cut at Toujours, but considering how infrequently you have to get you hair cut and how great it looks, I think the haircut is a very reasonable price.

I had an epiphany this past summer when I visited NYC and got my hair cut at Devachan Salon, where I got the absolute best haircut of my life! Now, as much as I'd like to fly to NYC every time I need a haircut, I needed something a little closer to home so I took everyone's advice on this board and made an appointment with Cally, who has trained at Devachan. I am so happy with the result! Cally cuts your hair dry, snipping each individual curl on its own ... takes the time to work through your entire head of hair and look at each curl by itself. After that initial cut is done, then you hit the sinks for shampoo & conditioner (in my case, DevaCare "NoPoo"), then gelling and drying, and THEN Cally does a second round of snipping after your hair has had time to shrink, to make sure it's the perfect shape. I am happy, happy, and love my hair. Cally is HIGHLY recommended.

I went to Callie in September of 2008. I was looking for a cut that would give some bounce and shape to my shoulder-length 3B curls, while also allowing me to continue growing it out. I had never had a Deva-type cut before, so I was very nervous. Callie took the time to really examine each curl and shape it just right. Although I was very happy with how light and bouncy my curls were after the cut, I was alarmed by how short some of them were. On top, I had several ringlets that were barely an inch long!!! And the sides that fame my face were MUCH shorter than I had expected them to be. That said, the cut has grown out BEAUTIFULLY, and I have not needed to go back for a re-shaping or even a trim. With other stylists, I typically go back in 4-6 weeks because my hair is growing out unevenly. This cut has kept its shape for four months. So, my main piece of advice is this: if you go to Callie, and you don't want super short sections, be sure to tell her. She is a professional, and she wants to make her clients happy, so I'm sure she would be glad to work within whatever parameters you set for her.

After 20 years of the most horrendous haircut experiences, I was skeptical that this time would be different. Hanging onto the hope that all of these reviews gave me, I walked into the salon and met with Cally. Within the past year I have lost more than a foot and a half of length getting bad cuts and fixing a botched dye job that left more than half of my hair curl-less. My boyfriend was shaking in anticipation that he might wind up having another misserable post-haircut night, having to console me through yet another butcher job, having joked about calling the salon in advance to give them the "if you screw up her hair..." bit. I closed my eyes, let Cally do her work, and when I opened my eyes slowly afraid to see what was in the mirror in front of me, a huge smile came across my face. I had the most beautiful looking hair that had ever sat on my head! My curls were back, full of spring and sassiness, my jaw was sore from smiling so big for so long! It has been a few days now, and it looks just as fantastic as it did in the salon. The price is a bit steep for a cut, but I figure with all the money I have spent trying to fix the past hack-jobs, it actually figures out to be a savings, and I will go back for every single haircut from this day forward. Absolutely worth it ladies!

I will never go back to her (or this salon) again! I actually left the place in tears, something I have not done since I was 8 (I am now 25). I've had Callie cut my hair once before and it turned out ok - she cut it much shorter than I wanted but I thought it was because I had dead ends that needed to go. I waited 3 months and came back to get my hair TRIMMED and cleaned up a bit. It was to my shoulders when I went it. I explained that I was growing it out, did NOT want a short hair cut and just asked her to clean it up. She trimmed the bottom layers and I was happy at first until she cut the top layers super short (couple inches). At the end I had a mullet with my short curls in the front and the bottom layers in the back still long. She then cut off the bottom to get rid of the mullet look leaving me with a super short haircut - shorter than chin length. I was very dissappointed that I got such a short hair cut after specificaly telling her I was growing it out and did NOT want it short. Yes hair grows out again but I will never go back to a stylist that doesn't listen to me and does whatever she wants!

I LOVE this woman!!! I have very long, course, curly hair and the Chicago humidity drives me crazy. Usually by mid-July, I'm ready to chop it off. In the past I have gone to stylists who have panicked at the idea of cutting more than a couple inches off, so they discourage it and I go home thorougly disappointed. I went to Callie based on these reviews, and this woman just took control of the situation, chopped the 6 inches off I asked for, gave me the bangs (yes, bangs!) that I asked for (I'm wearing my hair straight these days), and was so thorough with it that when I was done, she had two clients waiting because she had taken the time to cut my hair so intricately, and didn't allow herself to be rushed. I have never had more attention paid to a haircut by a stylist. She takes a lot of pride in her work, and it's obvious in her results. I've never been more happy with a haircut. Callie is awesome and competent and I hope she's around for years to come!!

I live in Detroit and there are no Deva-trained stylists here, so when I went on a weekend trip to Chicago, I booked an appointment with Callie. She did everything exactly as the Curly Girl book says. She absolutley did NOT cut my hair wet! She was super friendly and made me feel really comfortable. I was a little nervous that I would get pressured into using Deva products, I personally don't like them and prefer Curly Hair Solutions, but she just said "Keep using whatever you're using, it's working great!" When she was done I liked my hair, but didn't love it as much as I expected, but looking back that really wasn't her fault. I had gotten a bad cut a few months before by someone else that left my bangs waaaaay too short so she did the best she could. Fast forward 2 weeks and I love my hair now. I think the bangs have finally grown to a length where they work with the cut Callie gave me and I'm very happy. I don't know if I'll go back because of the distance, but if I'm ever in Chicago and need a haircut, I'll go see her for sure!

I was really clueless about how to work with her hair. Callie gave her the best haircut she has ever gotten and gave us some great suggestions for caring for her hair. Other places I have taken her have cut her hair so that it comes out uneven when it curls up but Callie got it just right. Some salons act like they'd rather not have cut a child's hair but Callie was very nice to my daughter. She even volunteered that my daughter only needs 3 haircuts a year. I would really recommend Callie for anyone with curly hair. The price was definitely worth it.

Finding Callie was definitely the apex of my "hair karma". After years of fighting and trying to get it right, I happened to walk-in at Toujours and lucked out that Callie had an opening. Not knowing what to expect, I gave her my usual speel: thin curly hair that I like to keep long and color treat at home. Rather than the usual response I get ("Oh NO! You should cut it all off, stop dying, and straighten it!"), she gave me the perfect cut that defined my limper curls, gave me body and definition, and (shockingly) confided that she knows that the home coloring, though not always best on the hair, is at times a budget MUST. She is a WIZARD. As long as Callie is in town, I'm not getting my hair cut ANYWHERE else. She listens to what you want and really knows her stuff.

She scrutinized my hair from every angle (at one point almost lying on the floor) and did everything correctly: she cut it dry, cut the shape while thinking about any possible shrinkage, and used Lo-poo shampoo and conditioner on me. I am a cross between a 3B and a 3C, and she was able to take the triangle/mushroom effect out of my hair. It cost $70 (not including tip), but was sooooooo worth it.

Well after getting my hair cut shorter then I really wanted in February and having a bunch of frizz to boot I decided to hold off on going back. Fast Forward to April and I have this huge nappy head. I started doing searches online and came across this site. It was a toss up between Toujours and another salon. I chose Toujours mainly because of the location...just a hop, skip and a jump from me. I was so nervous going in but everyone in the salon was great. Finally I sat in Callie's chair and told her that I wanted length but also wanted shape and wanted to have the bulk taken out. She said with the denseness of my hair cutting it dry would probably be best. I have never had my hair cut dry except by my mother...I was excited and still kind of scared. She started snipping and I thought "No, way is she going to get the bulk out of my hair just doing that." I started to see it change right before my eyes. Towards the end of my cut she asked me how the shape was and I made a suggestion, she did a few more snips and voila! It was so awesome I never thought my hair could look that good. I got shampooed and bought some product and left so thrilled. Today I woke up, showered and conditioned my hair and it still looks great! I will definitely be going back and I can't wait to show the girls tomorrow at work...they've been telling me to just get it straightened. Hah! No way!

I left there looking like I had a bad 80's perm; not to mention white stripes for highlights that did not go away after a second application of toner. She seems to have created her own technique of having the client lay their head back so she can cut your hair in its "natural flow". The only technique worse than this is cutting curly hair wet and straight. She claims to follow the Curly Girl book but didn't think twice when she was starting to cut my hair wet (I haven't had my hair cut wet in over 3 years). If you have ever gone to a stylist that has been officially trained at Devachan Salon in NY and are a follower of the Curly Girl book, you will be disappointed.
