I stumbled onto this website from FB, then found Mark here and decided to take a chance. I've had some horrible hair cuts at the hands of so called professionals so to say I'm gun shy about getting my hair cut is an understatement. Enter Mark. He put me completely at ease. We talked about what my hair routine looked like, what I did/didn't like with my hair, then he got to work giving me the best salon experience of my life! Usually I'm not very talkative in the chair because I am too busy worrying about what is being done to my hair, but not with him. We chatted comfortably, he explained how to simply care for my hair, and I was up, out and loving my hair in under 1.5 hours. I cannot say enough good things about my experience and how great Mark is. My limp, frizzy, barely 3A hair became shiny, soft, well managed 3B curls and I'm never going back. Go see him, you will be so glad you did!

I met a lady while being out one day, and her hair looked amazing, curly of course. I asked her who did her hair and she was so ecstatic about Mark., and she told me to check out his reviews on here. I made my appointment, and now not only do I go see him, but my teenage son and daughter are both going to him now and we have never been happier. I came across Mark through a mutual friend, she told me he was great with curly hair, so of course I had to try, and Im very glad I did. I have never had control of my curls, its always been the opposite, they controlled me, and bad haircuts don't help. Ive just been WOWWED!!! I thought I had a 2b curl, when Mark got done, I had a 3a, I still can't believe it!!! Mark took time to explain what other stylist have done to my hair that wasn't right, then explained what he was going to do, and the products he was using to achieve the finished look. Its so easy and my curls last for days now that I have the right cut, and using all the products he used and recommended. A lot of people say they know how do do curly, Im very glad I came on here and read clients hyping about their experience and love for Mark and their hair, he definitely is a curly hair stylist!!!!

After reading a lot of the reviews on Mark, I decided to give him a call and set up a appointment. I felt pretty good about it just from our talk on the phone, and then when I got to the salon, saw he had curls, that made me feel even better. We had a consultation, and he knew right away everything I wanted to say and all the things I hated and had been through, so I was feeling comfortable before even getting my hair cut. I was amazed how much he knew, basically everything Ive wanted to hear from a stylist my whole life, and e had me cut, educated and out of there in about 30 minutes, I am so pleased and would highly recommend you calling him today.

My husband, daughter and I have been coming to Mark every 6 weeks for almost 20 years, and we all have curly hair. Mark is more than our hairstylist, and we have been loyal and happy since day one. My whole family gets their haircut from Mark, even the guys, we all have curly hair. My daughter was the first to get her hair done, after that, seeing how great her hair looked, we all followed. Mark walked each one of us through what he was doing, and showed us that it was easy, once we got the right cut, and started using the right products. I think Im like most curly girls, scared to try a new stylist, and also excited to try a new stylist, and usually after I get it cut, Im disappointed and scared to get it cut for another year. This was until I found Mark, now I get my haircut whenever it needs it, not after letting a bad cut grow out. Mark told me I probably was doing the right things to my hair, I just had the wrong cut, and maybe not using enough product to control my hair, he was right. My life just got a whole lot easier, since I found MARK!!! My whole life has always revolved around my hair, isn't that what curls do, control us!?! I found out about Mark a few years back from coming on to the NATURALLY CURLY website, but I live in Maui, and there aren't many Hair salons on the island, much less ones that have a clue about curly hair. The good thing is I work for American Airlines and they are based in FT. WORTH, so I come to DFW a few times a year for work. I looked up salons in the DFW area, and it seemed that out of all the salons in the area, Mark had the most ratings and everyone seemed to have positive thoughts on him and his work. I was so excited to be able to get in to see him when I was going to be in town, and after one visit, I haven't been to another stylist in years!!! I get to see him 3-4 times a year, which is perfect, and definitely plan to continue to keep coming back for as long as I can. Before coming to Mark, I hated getting my haircut, EVERYONE says they can cut curly hair, but that is not true. Mark has curly hair, he knows what we have been through, and figured out a way to make me love my hair for the first time EVER!!! Go see Mark, use the products, he will give you advice, walk you through it, and you will make the trip like I do, THANKS MARK!!!!

Mark transformed the last 3 chop jobs into a very nice shape for me. He used a lot of product that my hair needs. I left wet and when it dried it looked great. I'm truly amazed by the number of rave reviews here. Sometimes I think we curly haired girls are so used to people that don't have a single clue what they're doing, that anything a little better seems more amazing than it is. I, however, had a fantastic stylist for 10 years and never once had a bad haircut. People used to approach me on the street to ask me where I got my hair cut and curly-haired friends asked me time and again what products I used and if I would do their hair.
But alas, I lost my hair god and had to find a new one. I came to Marc hoping he could fix a terrible hair cut I got before him. After listening to him talk for 30 minutes about the dreaded triangle, I figured I was in good hand. Wrong. Ironically, I actually left with the dreaded triangle after all that hype. And I'm completely baffled as to how when we spent so long talking about how my last stylist wouldn't give me layers and how I wanted "lots" of layers, and brought a picture showing just that. He also went much shorter than we discussed, so now I have to grow it out before I can even have someone fix it. Oh, and one side is longer than the other and there are lots of random long hairs that stick out.
Another sign for me that he isn't the curly hair expert everyone here seems to think is that he treats all curls the same. We were discussing how long we can go between washes, and I said my real issue is once I put my hair up, it's done. If I take it down after that, it's just a total mess (as with any hair, a hair tie creates lots of creases... I can fix it if I wet it a bit, but yeah, it'll never be the same). He told me that this means I'm not putting enough product in my hair and went on about the 4 products everyone should use. Um, NO. I use very little product in my hair, and I can get away with it. If your hair is healthy, you can achieve nice, smooth, silky curls with a ton of product.... rather than sticky or crunchy hair, which no one wants. Another reason my friends always ask me what I use, because they want to know how not to have the wet look.
I (stupidly) asked for a blowout, again assuming a curl expert would know what he's doing. He sat me down in the chair with CHUNKS of white conditioner in my hair.... took a huge paddle brush and used it to plastered my hair to my face while drying it. I walked out of there with my face breaking out from a reaction to all the crap he'd put in it and my hair was SOOO sticky and disgusting. My friends touched it and confirmed.
Oh, and the final sign he doesn't understand curls -- he took a big brush (yes brush) to my wet hair to rat out the curls. I cannoooottt stand it when stylists do this. You should NEVER use a brush on curly hair. You use a comb to gently get any knots out, unless you want to create tons of split hairs and wonder why you have frizz. UGH.

I spent MANY MANY years fighting my curls.  I decided in the last few years that it is a battle that I don't want to fight anymore.  I started doing research and had no clue there was a whole NETWORK of people out here with my same dilemma!!  I started researching to find someone to cut and color my hair.  Mark's name kept coming up over and over for the the Dallas area. I made an appointment and Mark cut and colored my hair.  If you have curly hair you know how scary that can be because if a mistake is made, you will live with some crazy hair for a WHILE!! Mark did an AMAZING JOB. I am only 2 days out but honestly I couldn't be more happy.  Not only did he cut my hair but we discussed HOW and when to wash my hair, how to use products in and and how to dry it.  I am so excited to grow out my beautiful curls!!  If you are looking for someone in the DFW area to cut your curly hair--I would HIGHLY recommend Mark Marcell. It is definitely worth it.  (and yes Myles--your dad IS famous!) ;)

I just had my cut&color with Mark at his Plano location. He's cut my hair for more than a year now and each time he never fails to exceed my expectations! I recommend him to every curly head! I love that he has a teaching spirit and will instruct you on how to achieve the same look at home. Plus his prices are much more affordable than other curly stylists in the Metroplex. If you're trying to reach him for an appointment though, be aware that his Dallas location is closing and will be relocating to the Preston/Mockingbird(Greenville) area. I've tried other hair dressers and I came back to Mark. He knows curly hair and he can do conservative or edgy hair. I love that I can tell him what I like in a few descriptive words, what I don't like, and just leave the rest to him. I trust his knowledge and skill and will continue to go back to see him. I have an edgier hair cut and I get at least one compliment on my hair a week. A big part of that goes to Mark for being able to execute what I want out of my hair.

Mark is the greatest! I had just moved here after having a decent stylist in Nashville. Not great, but at least knew what she was doing about curly hair. After her, I knew I could never go back to random people just cutting my hair and chopping it to pieces. After all the rave reviews for Mark on here, I knew he had to be the first I gave a try. Well, looks like I can just throw out that last of runner-ups! :) Mark is great, personable, and teaches you how to get the look he gives you at home. He also gave me a list of the products he used in my hair if I wanted to use exactly what he did. But he doesn't push products on you. He told me to do whatever worked for me. He gave me plenty of tips and tricks for at home, too. With my hair style, the upper layer of curls has a tendency to "drop" when they get to a certain length, and it starts becoming very wide. Mark told me, with the cut he gave me, I'd probably need to come back in two months, as the curls would "drop" again. He couldn't have predicted it better! I've made my next appointment to fix the "dropping" and I'm excited and happy knowing that Mark will treat me right. If you're in the Dallas area with curly hair, you HAVE to let Mark cut your hair :)

OK, you can call him the "King of Kurl", "Wizard of Wave" or "Spinner of Sprirals"... whatever, this guy knows curl! He has them himself and there is nothing like experience! I love my cut. I've had this length and shape before but it is not the same cut. This is so much better than any haircut I've had. Mark really loves what he does and it shows. (He also really loves Myles (Happy Birthday!) He is patient and thorough. He makes sure you leave the salon with all your questions answered and you are equipped to "self-style" at home. My daughter is 12 years old and we've spent 10 of those years trying to find someone to help me with her hair!! I think mine is type 2C and hers maybe 3B or 3C......not sure. I have never known what to do with my wavy, curly, can be frizzy hair, but I have always been able to straighten it with no problem so I wear it straight most of the time. My daughter's hair, however, is very different from mine and anyone else's in our family (we can't find anyone who has hair like hers!!). It was like little lightening bolts when she was little and has now turned into more spiral curls but with frizz. In her 12 years, the length of her hair hasn't even made it to her shoulders. We have tried many different products, many different salons, and have attempted to straighten it. She has left salons in tears. With all of her friends having long, beautiful straight-ish hair she was beginning to develop a huge complex. On our journey to find anything or anyone to give us the "right" answers we found Mark!!! I have to admit I prayed really hard before her appointment.........we needed this to go well. I gave him my opinion and told him our experiences and then left he and my daughter to do their thing. Sitting in the waiting area, I could hear them chatting and was so amazed!! He had my daughter in full conversation about her hair, her activities, etc. When they were finished she was elated with the results, smiling from ear to ear!! I couldn't believe how happy she was and how willing she was to express it! Mark wrote down instructions and gave us suggestions on product (and the best part.....he never tried to up-sell us on products sold in the salon!!). My daughter's hair had never looked so healthy and she had a great experience. Its been 2 months and her hair STILL looks amazing!!!!! Her confidence has risen dramatically..............thank you Lord! I will now take my 2C hair to him and see what amazing things he can do with me so I can give my blow dryer and flat iron a rest. Anyway, I wanted to update...this past year I went through treatment for breast cancer and lost all my hair. All my beautiful 2A curls..gone. My hair is coming in now, and Mark has not only been there for me a friend, but gave me shampoo to use, told me what kind of product to use, and is helping me as I transition back to my old curly self. There is no stylist like Mark in this area. One who not only knows about curly hair, but also cares about his clients like family. He is the only person I would trust with my hair..period.

What? You have curly hair and you have never been to Mark Marcell at On the Avenue? What are you WAITING for? Let me tell you, my friend, you have never had a haircut like you will get from Mark. Not only that, but he will tell you things about curly hair and your hair in particular that you probably have never heard before. He's one of us! He has curly hair too! He speaks the language, is a member of congregation just like us! He will not only cut your hair perfectly but he will explain the products he uses on your hair (you can buy them there when you leave) and how to use them. He makes it SO SIMPLE! I LOVE LOVE LOVE MARK!!. For years I've had to wear my hair short because I could not find a stylist that would do a good looking haircut on long curly hair. What finally broke the dam were some scathing comments I overheard from a couple of girls at my university about my hair. So, I decided that I would do something about it. First, I took to my laptop to search for something that I could do to make my curly hair look good and so I came across this website which was a life saver. I found lots of cool tips and not only that I could look for the salon nearest me with reviews left by curly haired people!!! So I began to let my hair grow as long as I could stand it without it having any shape and then I went to "On the Avenue" to look for the well reviewed Mark. I LOVE MARK!!! I went in with a HUGE "DON'T" list: don't cut it short, don't thin it out, and don't leave it round at the back!!! I didn't even have to say anything, he took a look at my hair and said "Why is it that other stylist always do this? Look they thinned out your hair, and give you a tail, this looks like long mullet." And right there, on my dry hair he cut a section out, leaving it straight across. I knew I was in good hands as soon as he greeted me since he himself has curly hair. In less than an hour, he had cut it and styled it!!! I'm definitely coming back. He has become my new best friend. After struggling for years with my daughters curls I hopped on the internet to hopefully find someone who really new how to cut naturally curly hair. We found Marc at On the Avenue in Dallas. My daughter and I were so excited in anticipation of the appointment with someone who may be able to solve some of the struggles she was facing. Marc was wonderful! He made my 13 y/o daughter feel comfortable enough to actually ask questions regarding the care of her curls. Marc didn't just start cutting either, he pulled up a stool and studied my daughters hair, evaluated the different types of curls she has and then asked her many questions. When the cutting started he was methodic and careful, making sure to cut in the correct place on the curl. At the end of the appointment Marc actually wrote down care instructions for my daughter that she has carefully placed on her mirror at home. First of all, let me tell you that the salon itself is adorable. It is a small old house, but it has been remodeled and organized with such taste that you immediately feel at home. They offer you something to drink and the staff is super friendly. Then this curly headed man with adorable blondish ringlets and a great attitude comes to get you and takes you back to a little room. My bf was with me and Marc just took him along too. Then he listened to all the crap I had to say about my hair, and looked at my unrealistic pictures of what I wanted. I told him that I loved Afros and big big hair. I am a type 3a by the way. Then he gave me a shampoo, conditioned my hair (even though I cowash, I really didn't care) and started cutting my hair. I was sooooooo into the conversation with him about a million things, that I didn't even notice when he was done and started putting re:coil and other products in my hair. This is the moment when I started paying lots of attention cuz I really wanted to see how he would style my hair. He would explain to me what he was doing and why every step of the process. We just kept talking and then I noticed that he put so much more product than I ever would, and my skepticism began. I thought "there is no way this is gonna come out right" since he was not only putting tons of product ( the usual re:coil, gel, mousse) and he was just combing my hair with his fingers and even a comb and really working the product through, and I am just thinking, man he broke off all the curls cuz my hair can never withstand a lot of handling or I end up with frizzy stringy hair. He also styled my bangs and diffused my hair, and we were done. When I looked in the mirror, my hair looked great! I could not believe it. IT looked shiny, healthy, and DEFINED! The cut looked great too, even though it wasn't like the pics, but I understand that it was impossible for him to give me something like that if my hair is so damn short. Anyway, I am growing my hair, but the next cut will always be with Mark. He is the S(&^t. He is pretty cool too, not what you will expect at all. You will see, give him a try!

Count this as another recommendation to see Mark if you have curly hair! For as long as I can remember getting my hair cut I have always gone to see stylists who did not get my curly hair. A lot of them recommended flat irons and straightening treatments, or would just blow dry my hair straight to avoid dealing with my curls. They cut my hair the same way ... for straight hair. Mark gets curly hair, and he walked me through how he would cut my hair, what he used, and how he styled it. It was really laid back and comfortable, and when I left I had a cut that looked good after he styled it ... and more importantly looked good after I styled it! I love my new do, and for the first time in years can wear my hair down with out having zero volume at the roots. Do not question it. Just go! He is affordable, he listens, and he gets it. Really.

I finally made the decision to become a real adult and search for a stylist that was known for curly hair capabilities. In the past, I could always get away with cheap hair cuts. But I needed a good style since it had been so long. A friend of mine told me about this website, another curly, and so I searched for someone close to my zip. I drove 3 hours to Dallas just to see him and it was MORE than worth it! For the first time in my life I have an awesome hair cut! Let me just begin by saying that I have had some pretty bad haircuts in my day, so Im always very nervous about having someone cut my curly hair, but I read some reviews and decided to bite the bullet and see what the hype was all about. I am so glad I did. Mark is amazing. He made me feel so at ease ( i was super nervous) and explained everything he did. He got rid of all my dead ends, gave it shape, and made it look pretty again. ( i had a lot of straight heat damaged ends that made my curls horrible, and he fixed it). Its shorter than I am use to, but at least its healthy now, and when it grows out, its going to be beautiful. If you have curly hair, make an appt. immediately... you will not regret it. Another thing i enjoyed is that he doesnt push products on you, and tells you cheaper alternatives that you can get to achieve the same results. I love him. Hes got a client for life!

I found Mark through a friend who visited another stylist at On the Avenue. She told me that was a guy that was cutting curly hair every time she went in to her stylist. I have normal/fine hair, but a combo of s-shaped waves and corkscrews. After years of stylists not having a clue what to do with my hair (years of choosing between stacked bobs or "Christmas tree head") it's a relief to find someone in DFW who knows curly hair and doesn't pressure you into wearing it straight. When I sat down, he explained why it wasn't behaving, and how we were going to fix it. When he asked about lengthhpreferences, etc, I told him "whatever you think is best" - I'm glad that I did. My hair has never looked this good since I've lived in Dallas. He didn't pressure me to buy product ("mousse is mousse, even it's $5.99) and that's very refreshing. Good experience, fantastic haircut.

I moved to Dallas over a year ago,leaving a wonderful stylist behing me. Parting with her was so difficult becuase I knew that finding a replacement that knew what they were doing, even in a large city, would be challenging. First of all, I liked the feel of the salon. It has a bohemian/easy feel, not at all snooty. The in-hourse curly Guru, Mark, is great! Being the Queen of the Chi and having had my unruly hair straight for a year I happened into the salon by accident. Watching Mark work with curly hair- I decided to give it another go. Mind you I have spent hundreds of dollars on products to produce pretty curls. On a whim I booked a shampoo blow dry as I was getting on a plane to the beach for a photoshoot there. Overall, I had a wonderful experience at the salon. Mark was as great as everyone else has shared. It had been about 2yrs since I've had my hair cut. We took off about 5 inches and I can say that my curls are happy! :) The thing I appreciated about Mark the most was the time he took to tell me what products I needed, why I needed them, and how to apply them. I've not received that from any stylist. Also, when I asked about when I should schedule again, he didn't give me the standard 'in three months' answer. He basically said, "You'll know. I went to Marc about 4 hours ago today and absolutely loved him. Everyone noticed my haircut and loved it! He asks you how you want your hair cut, which if you are like me, I always say however because I really don't know how curly hair should be cut. Marc is exactly like everyone says; professional, informative, friendly, and amazing with curly hair!!! I already had a great stylist, but after finding Marc through this website, I decided, "Why not try him out?". I had a very funky fro type hairstyle that I loved, but wanted to try something extremely different. I wanted to cut it all off into a frohawk type style. I live in the British Virgin Islands and was going to vacation in Dallas. I decided to check out Marc Marcell, due to his excellent reviews on this site. I must say I was not disappointed at all!! On my most recent visit to Mark, I said, "I think I'm gonna go for the curly look (embrace my natural style)!" He was ecstatic, to say the least, so that made me feel good about my decision. About 15 to 20 minutes later, he was all done. Quick and easy. We let my hair naturally dry, and after a few minutes, the curls just sprung up. It looked fabulous! I've gotten so many compliments on the curly cut. I also tried it straight, and it looks just as awesome. I love it. I can work two looks for the price of one! I think he's just so skilled in creating a cut that works both ways, straight and curly. The curls are working out great for me. I think I'm a changed girl. I definitely recommend Mark to a curly head or straight head. You're sure to meet a guy who's cool, laid-back, totally unpretentious and awesome.

I stumbled upon Mark through my husband when my stylist moved out of town. My husband and Mark were friends before he became a stylist and Mark has been cutting his hair for 8 years. I have only been to Mark 3 times now and as long as I live in Dallas, Mark will be my stylist. Not only is he a great stylist, he's a great conversationalist as well. I always leave the salon feeling pampered and fresh. If you are looking for a down-to-earth stylist that knows what he's doing, look no further.

Mark is awesome! He cut my hair and it looks great. I have never been to a stylist that actually knows curly hair. He knows how to cut it and how to style it. I am very happy with my hair and I will continue to see Mark. I definitely recommend him to anyone who has curly hair and is tired of the "looks good at the salon, but what am I going to do at home" feeling. I have been there, done that!

--240 monthly haircuts and styles over a decade and a half since I was 16 years old. --20 plus stylist and 18 (+ or -) salons from New York to Dallas to San Francisco. --1 name sticks out: MARK MARCELL Where has he been since I started the battle for the PERFECT cut and style of my curly hair? Well, I am not going to live in the past, but I sure know where I will be going in the future!!! Not only does he, himself have curly hair and the ablility to empathize with his clients, but he has a true natural talent plus years of experience to bring the curl to a desired control. I was at ease the second I sat in his chair. I pepperd him with questions for what he wanted to do to achieve the desired results I have so long been looking for in a cut and style. From his responses, I could tell that he was not just talented; not just had experience; but continually educating himself on the latest and greatest in procedure and product knowledge. But really, who cares what he knows and says. The proof was made certain, not only when I walked out the door, but by the numerous complements I recieved by both man and woman. He truely was worth the search and suggestion I took to go see him!!! If you have curly hair--(or for that matter)--or not, but might have some of the same "HAIR HISTORY," I might suggest checking Mark out!! I just ask, please do not take my monthly time slot!!!!! When I moved to Dallas six months ago I thought it would take me AGES to find a stylist who could deal with my hair. I've got long curls that I never blowdry, so it takes a good cut to keep it looking decent. Mark is awesome, and also totally fun to visit. Amazingly for Dallas.....you actually leave with money left in your checking account after the cut is over. I also get all my color done with Mark and have been really happy with those results, too. DEfinitely check him out.

I have been a loyal follower of Mark since 1999. He is the only person I trust with my curls. I have gone through stages of chin length as well as shoulder length and anything in between and I get compliments wherever I go. Mark rocks! And he can also do your color. Go see him..you won't be sorry.
