've loved my last 2 cuts with Ann. She's really friendly, quick, and makes sure you LOVE it before she sends you home. She also stocks a really good range of products, including some low-price options - last time she used a Tigi brand product that you can get at Shoppers. This place doesn't have a lot of frills - no tea or whatever, but who cares? Plus she takes $20 off for students!

I am writing this review about three and a half months after initially receiving my Deva cut from Ann at Aphrodite's Sanctuary and upon booking my next appointment. I believe the sign of an excellent cut is one that lasts beyond 2 weeks after your salon visit, and Ann's work has proven itself for me.

I visited Aphrodite's Sanctuary after reading reviews on naturallycurly, google+ and yelp about Ann's skills. After growing out a pixie cut for a year without haircuts I finally felt there was enough length on my 3 A-B hair to be styled into a proper cut. Upon visiting Ann for the first time- with Mom and Big Sis in tow- I emphasized my desire to keep as much length as possible while trimming any dry or uneven ends. I specified that I follow the curly girl method and she used appropriate products and gave me great solutions to some of the pricier products I liked. Ann shaped my wooley mess into a beautiful, layered trim, working with the curl and growth pattern and not aggressively shaping the curls into a difficult to maintain short style.

I should also mention that my hair care routine is as low-maintenance as possible and Ann was able to impart very detailed instructions on how to maintain the wonderful work she did. Her cut and care instructions were so great and thorough that my mom and sister have since been back to have their hair done and they are also 5/5 stars pleased!

The salon is easy to access and humble. Ann and her co-worker are very friendly, making our three ring circus feel welcome in the small-ish space.

This was like an appointment with Edward Scissorhands. Hair chopped away quickly in huge chunks, flying through the air. I tried to have faith in the new-to-me Deva technique but because so much was chopped out while I was leaning backward or to the sides and so quickly, I couldn't see how wrong things had gone until it was much too late.

We discussed what I wanted at the outset and I got literally the opposite. A trim that would preseve as much length as possible with long angled layers at the front somehow turned into losing at least 5 inches off the ends with so many short layers cut throughout that my already fine hair feels skimpy. The long angular layers below my shoulders that I loved and wanted to keep are now at my nose. I agreed to about 2 inches off the ends and instead stood up from the chair to see ringlets around 4 inches long in a huge pile on the floor.

It isn't a hideous haircut but it is not what I wanted and it doesn't look anything like me. The round shape is completely wrong for me, the left and right sides are unbalanced and uneven - altogether different lengths.

At the end, Ann told me I should have gone for a bob - after I had specifically said at the outset that I hate myself with short hair and knew after many years of trial and error what works best for me and didn't want to change it. My pet hate is stylists who don't listen or who think they know better than I do how I should look and that they'll be able to just go ahead with their plan and convince me at the end. Even if the stylist disagrees, it's my head. I would rather have a stylist outright disagree and refuse to cut my hair than ignore me and do literally the opposite of what I asked.

It will take me at least a year to grow this out. I'm never setting foot in this salon again.

I big chopped almost three years ago, and this is the first time I actually got a trim- my hair is healthy but the ends were SUPER damaged. I got assigned to Ann and I'll be honest, I was a bit nervous too since there weren't very many reviews online on this specific stylist but I was EXTREMELY happy to get her. right off the bat, Ann was caring, attentive, and nevertheless she made me feel comfortable and at home. she was extremely knowledged on natural hair as well as how to keep it healthy, something I'm not used to with my past stylists (as awful and ironic as it sounds.) she chopped off my dead ends with a smooth hand and shaped out my hair. Ann explained and presented all the natural products she was using on my hair before application. I'll also add that she was working past the salon hours, but there wasn't a moment of impatience from her and she was never rushing, just taking her time. after the wash, condition and deep condition, my hair was extremely full of life, and although my hair had major shrinkage after the use of products, my curls were EXTREMELY defined.

a bit pricier than what I'm used to, but definitely would recommend and revisit this salon.

This was my first visit to Aphtodite's Sanctuary and I am definitely going back. I admit I was a little nervous about booking with Ann as opposed to the other stylist who had reviews here; but my hair was not working for me and it needed a haircut.  The salon has a homey feel to it; it is professional but not pretentious. Ann sat down and truly listened to my story and what I wanted and did not want for my hair.  I have very long, thick, wavy/curly hair; I take very good care of it but sadly never been truly happy with a haircut.  almost 2 years ago I took a risk and asked for layers for my nearly same length hair; the stylist cut a thick top layer of my then nearly hip length hair to MY CHIN! My hair does not curl as much when short and in general is less curly on the top layer. Growing out that haircut was a nightmare. Since then I have only been getting trims and few "repair" cuts to fix the layers.

I wanted about 2.5 inches off the length with some shaping for the face-framing layers. I went in with my natural curls/waves and she first did the cut on dry hair making sure I know what she is doing in every step.  Then she washed and styled my hair to see the curls better and to shape the layers. Then my hair was dried using a combination of the hooded drier and a diffuser. I am very happy with the cut but here are some things I did not like:

-Use of a cleansing shampoo that I am not sure was sulfate free (although she did ask if I am comfortable with that)

-Use of a Moroccanoil leave in which although an expensive product is not natural and has questionable ingredients (mineral oil, silicons)  for my lifestyle

-Use of heat-needed to see the natural pattern-without heat protection at least  to my knowledge. My curls are never as tight when air-dried so it is not an accurate picture of my hair.

-Once I braided my hair overnight before I washed it (wanted the ingredients out of my hair) I noticed the longest pieces are not blending in so I had to trim a few to make it nice when it is wavy.

-Although I am very pleased with the haircut but I also noticed my hair was cut at least 4-5 inches and not 2-3 inches. My hair is more so waist-length now as opposed to hip-length. I am pleased with it as it looks and feels healthy and is still very long.  Before I went for the cut I measured a section of hair it was 23.5ish inches now that section is 18.5 inches.

Despite the cons I listed I will be going back but will be more vocal about the products and also need of heat protection. I love how my hair looks right after wash, in braids, and with heat-less curls. It feels thicker which never happens when I get more layers put in.  Some of the extra length lost was due to me trimming the odd pieces. Ann is an amazing, knowledgeable, and kind stylist and I am looking forward to her doing my hair for years to come.

*Note: I have hair that boarders between 2Cand 3A with the under-layer being more curly as it gets longer and the upper-layers being more classic 2C texture with curls after a certain length. My hair is healthy and never been colored; I avoid heat (maybe 2-3 times a year to curl not straighten), silicons, sulfates, and perabans. My hair also has a VERY low porosity and even they could not dry it fully.

Ann is also amazing with other hair textures as I noticed her costumers with straight hair dropping by to praise her and make more appts with her.

I just returned from my third haircut at Aphrodite's Sanctuary and just like the previous times, I got complimented on my hair all the way home. On the street, on the subway and in shops! As a matter of fact, I've recommended her to the people I care most about (curlies as well) and they too, keep going back. Nadine not only listens, but she understands what my not-always-so-precise wishes actually mean. She's the only stylist that manages to give my hair shape without sacrificing the length. Her pintura highlights are beautifully done, and she also knows colour! It's one thing to cerebrally understand the notion that one should embrace what nature gave us... But that's not always so easy to do if all your hair does is be unmanageable, dull, pouffy, frizzy and if it just laughs at you. It's a completely different feeling to not only embrace who you are and what you look like, but to celebrate it. Nadine gives me reasons to celebrate every time, she really is amazing! Well I was so pleasantly surprised to be greeted by this warm, kind and energetic hairstylist. Nadine was so interested in what I was looking for in my hair style, how much time I liked to invest in my hair each day. She asked lots of questions about my current hair routine, problems I was currently having regarding hair growth. She was truly interested in MY needs. My hair is now long, shaped beautifully and has a nice rich colour to it. Also the Deva products are changing the texture of my hair and it's now thicker and healthier than before. I can't tell you how many compliments I've been getting on my hair and now 4 of my curly friends are vowing to make their next hair appointment with Nadine. My first appointment with Nadine was great; she examined the style and texture of my hair and decided a dry cut was best. She took the time to teach me a step by step process of getting the best curls from my hair and that was a real revelation. She never pushed products on me, but since I've tried them I really like them, though they are pretty expensive. Kudos to Nadine!

I went to get my hair done today. i was looking for a cut, and color. it cost me about $160 (i bought the shampoo and conditioner) and my hair looks exactly the same. to be honest i was extremely upset and i don't think i will return to the salon. having hopes of feeling beautiful and getting a new look only to leave 160 dollars poorer and look exactly the same broke my heart. i burst into tears as soon as i left. Kim and Nadine seemed to know what they were doing however i was extremely disappointed and have had better results going to a super cuts. at least they sell disappointment for less.I told them i wanted to go with a very drastic color change and i liked the idea of having something bold. and my hair looks EXACTLY THE SAME. they seem to have so many other glowing reviews i feel bad posting this but i've been crying and feeling robbed for hours.

Wow. It's finally happened. I've finally found the stylist I will never leave. I tried Nadine about a year ago and have been going to her ever since. Nadine is constantly educating herself on the latest tips, trends, products and science of hair. She is a Devachan-trained stylist (trained by Devachan herself!) and it shows. My first cut was an education. I felt like she had taken off so little, that it couldn't have made a difference (usually, I'm lamenting that the stylist chopped too much off and I'm left with a mushroom style), but she shaped my hair perfectly without taking away the length. She then showed me the step by step routine of how to style it for maximum and beautiful curls (what a revelation!) as well as the best products to use for my hair type. All of my friends have noticed a difference in my hair style and especially texture (looking thicker now with the Deva curl line of products) and three of my curly friends will be switching to Nadine for their next cuts. Kim has been with her for around a year now too and she's also terrific. She consulted with me on my colour and gave me a trim when Nadine was on mat leave and did a great job. If I could give one constructive criticism to them, it would be to take down the 'before and after' photos on the website. The lighting and 'models' (I'm one of them) don't do their work justice. Taking the pictures in the chair, just after the cut when hair might still be a bit damp and not fluffed out, makes the website look a bit amateur. And they don't need the pics. I found them by their reviews alone and actually despite the 'before and after' photos. FYI, the salon has moved up to Yonge and St. Clair.

Friendly and knowledgeable staff. This was my first visit to Aphrodite's and my first time putting a Keratin treatment in my hair after years and years of using traditional relaxers. Stylist Nadine was very professional and made sure to walk me through each step of the process as she treated my hair. She explained the purpose of each step in the treatment and asked many questions about my hair and my hair care routine. She was not only interested in having me walk out of the salon with beautiful hair, but also interested in helping me to keep my hair healthy in the long run. Overall I am very satisfied with both my hair and the service at Aphrodite's Sanctuary and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking to tame their curly locks!

Kim is wonderful. This week she cut and coloured my hair and I'm very happy. My hair was looking pretty dowdy with dull grey colour and long straggly curls. I love the idea of long curly hair but at 60 it was starting to look wrong. I was kind of nervous about getting it cut but I really wanted something more sophisticated. Kim trimmed it to a neater, but still casual look. I thought it looked a lot better but she wasn't completely happy with it, so she soaked it back down and started over - I've never had a stylist do that before. Although the first cut was fine, the final style is something that I'm thrilled with. It's short at the back with a wonderful shape at the crown and front. It's easy for me to take care of (especially after her detailed instructions about the way to use conditioner and foam) but it looks really stylish. Oh...and the highlighting is great too. I'm so happy with the cut that I almost forgot about that part. I'd highly recommend Kim...she listens and she's a perfectionist. What more could you want in a stylist?

I had decided to go to Aphrodite's Sanctuary after reading all of the positive reviews - I had been looking for a stylist who specialized in curly hair for a long time. Unfortunately my experience wasn't too great. It seemed like Nadine was cutting pieces of my hair at random - and while it looks fine when it's curly, when I straighten my hair (not too often, but sometimes) the jagged pieces and holes are really obvious. I've been growing it out for a while now, I have to wait a couple months before I'll be comfortable straightening it again. I won't be going back.

I've had dreadlocks for about 12 years and was looking to start fresh with my natural hair. After moving to Canada from NYC and for 3yrs searching for a knowledgeable natural hair stylist, I found Kim on the Aphrodite's Sanctuary website. Once I saw that Kim had natural curly hair and had training in NY, I thought she could be the one to transition me from wearing my hair in dread locks and continue to keeping my hair natural. For my first appointment meeting Kim, I was pleased to see that Kim had beautiful natural hair. She was very stylish, extremely professional, very educated and passionate about natural hair. She consulted with me and explained thoroughly about my hair texture and what I had to do to take care of it. She even convinced me to start fresh by cutting off all my dread locks!! I was so nervous but she made me feel so comfortable. I trusted her and she made me realize that this was only temporary and it would grow back. After our appointment, I felt so liberated. My hair feels so clean and healthy from the products she used. After 3yrs of searching for someone like Kim, now I'm finally excited about my new look and growing my hair out again. Thank you Kim!! Nadine is the only stylist allowed to touch my locks! Why? Because in my opinion she is the best hair stylist (curly or otherwise) in Toronto. I have always been 100% satisfied with my cut and highlights. Before any colour is applied or the scissors touch my hair, we have a consult on the "hair plan". Nadine is very knowledgeable and truly understands curly hair - she has curly hair herself. From her product recommendations, to the cut, and colour she knows how my hair will react and ensures that she provides me with input and guidance on what will best suit my desired outcome and hair type. Another great thing about Nadine, that you don't get elsewhere, is that she puts your hair first. What I mean, is that she won't do things that will ruin the health of your hair. She recommends products that will improve the health of your hair, and styling tips to minimize damage. There's a reason that she never has, and never will do Japanese straightening. Every time I leave the salon I feel beautiful. That's the sign of a great hair stylist.

I've never had a devacut before, and I've always had my hair cut by the same woman for 20 years -- out of sort of 'routine' I suppose, and a little afraid of anyone else touching my hair. But when I decided to start wearing my curls naturally, I realized perhaps the cheap 16$ hair cut was not the way to go anymore as I had a sort of pyramid thing going on when I styled it curly(as I was learning to do after years of updos or straightening, thanks to naturallycurly.com!). Looking at all the reviews, I decided to go with Nadine at Aphrodite's Sanctuary and I'm glad I did. She touched my hair, asked what I wanted, then told me what she would do before she even touched her scissors. She explained how she would put in layers, asked what I wanted with my bangs, etc. When I left, I loved my hair -- she'd done a fantastic job and the whole way home I was smiling. It wasn't anything more than a trim and some layers, but I feel like it made a huge difference and I love how it looks, even months later. :)

I had been looking for a new stylist who would be able to give me great cut with my curls and colour for a reasonable price. I had tried many other curl speciliasts, salons and products but none that were worth sticking too. My priorities in looking for a new salon were for someone to be able to reviatilze my curls, give me a good cut that would last through its growing-out phase and give me the blonde colour that I wanted; At Afroditie, I found ALL three expectations. My hair was in dire need of a boost, I had started loosing my hair and curl and going to Afroditie revitilized it completely, I have gotten my hair coloured and highlighted blonde twice by both Kim and Nadine as well cut by the both of them. I now have all my curl back, a great cut and vibrant colour. They are both full of great energy and listen to what you want as well as give their professional opinion. They were also able to recommend great products to be used and showed me how to do my hair. Found Aphrodite's Sanctuary through reviews on naturallycurly.com, and was impressed enough with the comments to give them a try - NO REGRETS AT ALL! Nadine gave me a fantastic cut, the best I have ever experienced in Ontario, and I have traveled all around the province trying salons that supposedly cater to curly hair! Robyn washed my hair only after it was cut, so Nadine could see where the hair curls when it is dry and knew exactly where my "problem spots" were. To explain my hair type: my hair is fine and thin with frizzy messy curls, and when it is wet you can never tell how far it will curl up or even where the curls are, but when it is dry it becomes a giant puff-ball. I have had some truly disastrous cuts in the past because of this, but Nadine's method of cutting it dry made all the difference! I ended up with soft curls framing my face without any extra bulk or frizz, and the shape has lasted almost 2 months so far (I have short hair). Loved how they didn't try to sell me on any of their products either, to me this meant the focus was on the service being provided. The professionalism and quality was exceptional, and I left the salon feeling thrilled to have both a beautiful cut and the knowledge of where to go for future cuts! They communicated well. In larger salons, I have sometimes felt "rushed" when handed over from one person to the next, and maybe a little bit forgotten. Nadine cut my hair dry, and Robyn then washed and styled it, very carefully. Results were great and the styling tips were very helpful. I spoke to Nadine the most, and she appears to very knowledgeable about curly hair. Nadine clearly uses a unique approach and she is very good at what she does. Plus, she continually upgrades her skills and doesn't rest on her laurels, like many stylists do after a few years. Without question I will go there again. The Negative: I didn't really care for the way my hair was styled post cut. To be fair, Nadine listened to what I wanted, its just that I am very particular about how I style my hair. So after it was styled, I went home, re washed it and re styled it. However, the quality and fair price of the haircut are more than enough to make me overlook the styling issue. You will not be disappointed - go!
