Can you crack a rib from excessive coughing?

My husband has had a terrible cough for around 2 months. His side (at the ribcage) is really hurting.
Can you crack or bruise a rib from coughing too much
and too hard? If you can, what do you do about it?
Yeah, you can. If he's been coughing that hard for 2 months, he really needs to be seen by a doctor. Really.
Yes you can! You can tape your ribs but he really should see a doctor if he's coughing that badly anyway.

I was born to be a pessimist. My blood type is B Negative.
I will tell you that you most definitely can. I am speaking from personal experience. I had severe pneumonia which led me to coughing for two months. I ended up with 6 bruised ribs, and 4 cracked ribs. I didn't think it was possible until I finally went and had them checked out.

My grandmother cracked her ribs from coughing so much. I agree that your husband should see a doctor, like, ASAP.

Yeah, he needs a chest x-ray.
Coughing for 2 mos is not good.
Mom fell and broke a rib or two. She had been coughing a bit before. After the chest x-ray, it was discovered she had lymphoma...
btw...is your hubby a smoker?
I don't mean to scare you, just want you to get it checked out and not wait...
Well clearly there is a consensus, but I just wanted to throw it out there that it's happened to me. Cracked rib from violent coughing as an aside to walking pneumonia. When I was like 15. Got me out of gym for MONTHS.

Seriously, though, he should certainly get checked out. There isn't much they can do about the rib, but they need to sort out the reason for the coughing and address it.
"And politically correct is the worst term, not just because it’s dismissive, but because it narrows down the whole social justice spectrum to this idea that it’s about being polite instead of about dismantling the oppressive social structure of power.
Fun Fact: When you actively avoid being “PC,” you’re not being forward-thinking or unique. You’re buying into systems of oppression that have existed since before you were even born, and you’re keeping those systems in place."
Stolen.
My dad cracked his sternum from coughing. That was how they found out he had multiple myeloma.

Obviously that's an extremely rare type of situation.
Echoing everyone else's sentiments: Please take him to the doctor ASAP!

No, but I have pulled a muscle, which was bad enough.

I had been coughing for about the same amount of time (2 months), it had gotten to the point where I couldn't talk to anyone for coughing all the time. I had to physically hug myself to brace my body for each onslaught.

I went to cough, and it immediately felt like some animal had bitten a chunk out of my side; it hurt THAT much. Like, it took me down to the floor. Recovery took a while too; I had to be bandaged up and had to take painkillers. Well, steroids also, for the respiratory inflammation. I felt like I'd been run over by a truck upon awakening in the a.m and dealing with the morning stiffness. I was out of work for a long time.

I have cough-variant asthma and the attacks start out imperceptibly with a dry little tickling cough, and without treatment balloons into the situation described above.

About 98% of the time, the dry coughing is the only symptom of my asthma attacks.

Thankfully, I learned lot from this experience and never let things get to this point again if I can possibly help it.

Please, please PLEASE have a doctor check him out; I can't imagine what broken bones from coughing must feel like

A few years ago, after more or less recovering from bronchitis, I developed horrible pain in my side. Turns out it was costochondritis, which I understood to be inflammation of the cartilage between the ribs. It hurt HORRIBLY - for a few days when it was at its worst, I couldn't even lie down without severe pain.

When I finally found a doc who could diagnose it, she told me it's not that uncommon to get it after having a coughing illness, since the ribs get a workout. I'd definitely see a doctor, since the pain can be pretty bad. Good luck!

I once dislocated a rib from hard coughing and had to have a chiropractor put it back.

Have your hubby checked for walking pneumonia especially after so long coughing.
